Sculptor AC Button II of www.carolinasculpturestudio.com discusses hand and machine driven chisels used for stone carving. The goal of the Traditional Stone Carving and Traditional Stone Finishing videos is to preserve this heritage craft by preparing individuals for further in-studio training and apprenticeship.
After a brief overview of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous stone, Button presents and discusses a wide range of tool or fire steel chisels and carbide chisels specifically designed for a similarly wide range of stone carving duties. Specific applications and chisel & hammer combinations are clarified, to benefit performance and minimize damage to tooling. This includes topics of tool design, heat treatment and construction. Thanks very much. Doing a video on this subject has been on my mind for years, so I hope this information is helpful. Before my apprenticeship, I nearly bought a large group of chisels to have for my work. Thankfully, I didn't because I soon learned that they would have been largely useless for my plans. Money is best spent on the proper equipment, whether it is the actual finished tools or tools & training to make those tools.

Thanks very much. Not everyone has opportunity to use a variety of new and used hand machines. It’s good to know the different characteristics before money is spent.
