traditional lakeside cottage timber frame project Lakeside Escape video tour Normerica

This four-season lakeside cottage beautifully marries traditional timber frame architecture with contemporary finishes. The 3,953 sq ft, 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom design is spread over two levels and offers lots of room for this family and their guests. The traditional gabled roof, dormers, partial stone cladding, and window grilles lend the building a traditional form. However, the monochromatic grey of both the roof and the siding, as well as the black metal windows give the home a modern touch.

The lot wasn’t suited for a walkout basement, so the homeowners opted for a two-storey layout, including a fabulous recreational room over the attached 3-car garage, taking the function of a traditional basement. With lots of windows, this light-filled multipurpose room is enjoyed for a myriad of activities including tv watching, pool playing, and working out.
When you enter the cottage, you are greeted by an amazing view through the glass staircase to the great room and the lake views beyond. The showstopping great room gets flooded with light through the windows of the cathedral timber frame ceiling. The medium-toned stained timbers and tongue and groove ceiling give the room a natural cottagey feel, while the crisp white walls and black windows keep the look fresh and modern. A soaring stone fireplace is the focal point of the room and can be enjoyed through to the kitchen and dining area.
The primary suite is situated just off the living area. With features such as folding doors that open to a private deck and a luxurious bathroom complete with a soaker tub tucked under a window, this primary suite is a true sanctuary.
The generous kitchen is an entertainers dream with a generous island, pantry, and light steaming in from the windows in the dormers above. The dining area is within the same space as the kitchen for convenient family meals and dinner parties.
Folding doors separate the dining room from the large Muskoka room. The soaring timber frame ceiling, stonework, fireplace and tv make this room the perfect marriage of comfort and natural elements - seamlessly blending indoor/outdoor living.
Heading to the second level, you climb a gorgeous timber and glass staircase where you get to fully soak in the beauty of the timber frame structure as well as the lake views. The second level contains a guest room complete with ensuite bathroom as well as the two children’s room with a shared bathroom. With the character and interest of the sloped ceilings and timber, this second storey is a cozy, special space.
The back of the cottage is as beautiful as the front, which is important when you are regularly making the walk from the lake to the cottage. The mix of stonework, windows, and grey siding give the cottage great ‘lake appeal’.

Thanks for the comment! Normerica did the architectural design, construction drawings, and supplied the building envelope (pre-manufactured timber frame, wall and roof systems, windows, and cladding). We are builders, too, but we did not build this project. We'll see if we can find that information from the clients and get back to you.
