Traditional Knives Anthology 7.0: Winchester Sowbelly Stockman by Queen

In Episode 6.0 of our Traditional Knives Anthology, a joint project of TheApostleP and Howabouthetruth channels, we take a look at the Winchester licensed Sowbelly Stockman by Queen Cutlery, produced in 1989. It's pretty special, my friends, and even 25 years after production, there are still some available!

I am just learning about Queen Cutlery, I have always been a Buck Knife man but now many of them are made in China, I think Queen makes very fine knives. Thanks so much.

Tim Scott of Blue Grass Cutlery Company has the original Rogers Jigging machine from Utica Cutlery and the original dies and shoes from those early 1920's Winchester patterns. What you might not know is that Bill Howard of GEC was the production manager that oversaw the production of those Black Box Winchester knives and this is most likely the beginning idea when Bill Howard developed the conception of GEC.

Umm.........I did mention the fact that Bill Howard was the #1 man at Queen during the Black Box Winchester program. Did you not watch the video? Tim Scott may have all of that equipment TODAY......but back when these authorized reproductions were first started, it was the brain child of Charlie Dorton, who was at the time, 1 of 2 co-owners of Blue Grass Cutlery. Also, back when all of this was going on, it was the OLIN corporation who owned all of the tooling & dies that made the original Winchester knives. Charlie & his partner at Blue Grass contracted with the Olin Corp for permission to use the original tooling & dies, with Bill Howard at Queen actually producing the knives. It's all mentioned right here in this video. In a later video in this series, I went into more detail about how the Black Box Winchester program along with the Case Classics program that started soon after the beginning of the BBW program, wherein both programs proceeded to run concurrently, were indeed directly responsible for Bill Howard gaining the firsthand knowledge, experience, and talent for making many of the long lost patterns.

Browsing through Mike Lathams web site the other night and saw this Winchester, then I remembered seeing it before on this video Rob. The money set aside for a new skinner this week was used to snap up this darling from Mike( got about 4 good skinners already). I would probably have past this knife by if it had not been for your informative video and thanks to Howsaboutthetruth for all the info. I shoot a couple of miles outside the original old town of Winchester in Hampshire and a few of my buddys have Winchester shotguns, wait till they see the mad Jocks new knife aquisition. God bless All.

I very well suppose; I had not heard about the firearm branded knives before the Chinese invasion. Nice to know there is a reason for it. Thanks for sharing. That knife is SWEEET!! The Word is Sharp!!!

Yep, Randy, you do indeed have the "real deal"........way to go!!! I never knew anything about the difference of "who made what" with these Winchester repro's, until I began researching. Since then, I've seen some of those German made Winchester's online. Some looked OK to me...........but others had horrible gaps in all the seams. I also have one of these whittlers, but mine is the 3971 model. It has the same old Utica brown bone as this sowbelly. Thanks for all your input Randy, and Blessings to you as well my friend.

I'm late for class! Thanks Rob, you really deliver buddy. ( Ya know, I was really worried about the length of the info I wrote, and I was trying to keep it as short as possible, I even had my son & daughter in law proof read it, and I asked 'em "Is Brother Rob's eye ball's gonna fall out from reading this "encyclopedia"?? LOL. They love the little comedy bit we volley back & forth.) After I sent ya this shipment, only then did I stumble upon an article written by Buzz Parker. ( Jim's son ) According to him, Charlie Dorton bought up all the jigged bone blanks from the old Utica Cutlery factory, not long before they began producing these Winchesters. This "old genuine Utica bone" was dated anywhere from 1910 to 1937 I believe, and they used it all up on these Winchesters made from the start in 1987 through 1989. So if Buzz is correct, these knives are handled in bone that's at least 77 to 104 years old. How cool is THAT? Like you, I've never seen any jigging like that. There is also some variation in the jigging of that antique Utica bone, from knife to knife, within this Winchester series.

What a cool knife! One thing I (think I) picked up on is once you break that strong detent when the blade is open, it closes rather easily. And with no half stop that is something to watch out for.

I finally got my 89 sowbelly knife in just a couple days ago. I guess like anything, there are good and not so good, and sadly, mine is not so good. The main blade is a strong snap opening, but lazy on closing, the other 2 blades are somewhat lazy in both directions, and have a week closing snap. There is also a gap in the brass line on one side. Despite a through cleaning and oiling, it remains the same. Beautiful knife, but after seeing the flaws, it's a little disappointing.

Sorry I missed your question Christopher, and I hope ya get my belated response here. These knives are only available through ebay for the most part. They turn up here & there, and prices still remain reasonable. Politely request a pre-inspection from any seller, because some of the knives being sold today may have flaws. Most don't, but some do.
