Traditional GSB flavours in Mumbai | Crab Sukkhe | Mutton Ghee Roast | Khubbe Wadi | Kunal Vijayakar

Join us on an exciting culinary journey as we explore the rich heritage of the Goud Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) community! Originally from Kashmir, the GSBs migrated to North Karnataka, bringing along their unique traditions and flavourful cuisine. Known for their love of seafood and aromatic spices, GSB cuisine is a delightful blend of coastal and Konkani influences that you won't want to miss. ✨
In this episode of Khaane Mein Kya Hai, we visit Maasli in Worli, Mumbai's only restaurant serving authentic Saraswat and GSB seafood. Award-winning and beloved by locals, Maasli is the place to be for a true taste of GSB culinary magic. From crispy fried delights to hearty curries, every dish here tells a story of tradition and taste. 😋
Kunal Vijayakar dives into a feast featuring some of Maasli's best offerings! He starts with the crispy Prawns Fry and moves on to the irresistible Crab Lollipops. The Konkani Ghee Roast Mutton leaves him speechless, while the Jumbo Crab GSB Style Sukkhe is a true showstopper. And let's not forget the flavourful GSB Tirfal Fish Curry that brings the taste of the coast right to your plate. 🤤
This episode is a food lover's dream come true! Kunal's enthusiasm and genuine love for GSB cuisine make this a must-watch. Each bite is filled with flavours that will transport you to the heart of the Konkani coast. Trust us, you don't want to miss out on this gastronomic adventure! 😋🍤🦀

GSB migration started from Saraswati river (that gave the name Saraswat), to Kannauj, to Gauda kingdom (areas of modern Bihar and Bengal) adding the name Gaud, then finally settling in Goa. During Portuguese invasions they migrated to Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala. They were businessmen, and also administrators in Maratha Empire - Satara, Kolhapur, some in Pune and most in Gwalior. GSB of Shaiva and Smartha tradition are non-vegetarians but those following Vaishnavism are vegetarians (like most other Brahmins). As a GSB, its good to see GSB food on your channel.

wow. good to know about Saraswat History. I am from Udupi and ive met a lot of Saraswat Brahmins form Gokarna which is kind of our Kashi. I only knew that they relate to the Shankaracharya Mutt / Shardha Mutt but did not know any other details about them till now. Thanks for sharing

Gowda means north Indian. There were five Dravida Deshas. We have five Dravida Brahmins. The Gujrath & Sindh (Gurjara), Maharastra, Karnataka, Andhra and Tamil (Tamil and Kerala). Then there were five Gowda Deshas. For some reason, Gowda Brahmins were allowed to eat meat, and the Dravida Brahmins were not allowed to eat meat. Konkani has words and similarities with Suraseni, Magadhi and Mahastrian Prakrit. GSB cuisine has many similarities with Oriaya cuisine and we even use similar words to describe some food. GSBs are a mixed lot from north India. Migration happened from the Saraswati river basin, Kaunaj and eastern Gangetic planes of Bihar & Bengal. When our ancestors came and settled down in Goa, they were in the middle of Dravida deshas. It was not acceptable there for Brahmins to eat meat. So they prefixed "Gowda" to continue to eat meat in Dravida Desha, and simultaneously claim Brahmin status. Please note that many north Indian Brahmins are allowed to eat Mutton and fish, but chicken and eggs are taboo.

Maasli is definitely the flag bearer of GSB food in Mumbai. Another noteworthy mention for GSB food has to be a restaurant named "Fish Curry Rice" which is present in Thane and Dadar.

@@LifeLight777 Gowda means north Indian. GSB's did not migrate from Kashmir. Some Saraswat Brahmins did migrate to Kasmir and became Kashmiri Brahmins.
