Another great example and probably the best for step by step bow building is Weylin Olive of Swiftwood bows here on KZread. I’ve seen most of his videos, met him in person several times and seen his work and the way he willingly helps all those around him…check him out if you haven’t seen him

I think my first choice would be Sam Harper of ''Poor Folk's Bows'' and the mouse trap crazy Shawn Woods and Billy Berger at Primitive Pathway's. These guys are not full of crap. I didn't pay much attention to Ryan Gill,.....till he done the hunting video's with a bow,.....I don't like Blow gun's and Atlatl's,...air guns,.....I do like Bows and gun's. I use an angle grinder to make bows,....that's as primitive as I'd ever want to be,.... cause I'd have chest pain if I tried to use a draw Knife. I also watch Clay Hayes, Mead Longbows and thats all I can think of right now.

I have to ask about your claim that kiln dried wood has more void spaces. I am a professional wood educator, and I have never heard of this. In ring-porous hardwoods, there can be a lot of variation in the volume proportion of earlywood, but this is particular to the tree and has nothing to do with whether or not it is kiln dried. If you split two staves from the same log and then air dry one and kiln dry the other, there will be no visibly discernible difference in the earlywood porosity between the two. I can't speak to what happens when you fire harden greenwood, as the much higher heat could create steam within the wood that ruptures some of the microanatomy.

  • @LWYLoutdoors

Thank you, because you helped me learn something. So I assumed all industrial kilns would be operating above 212F which would cause water to expand causing more void space. This was incorrect on my part. Some kilns do, some don’t. So the kilns that operate between 120 and 190F would not cause a different appearance or functionality of the wood. Only the kilns operating above 212F would. So some kilned woods are safe :) thanks much for this comment man!

@@LWYLoutdoors That makes more sense to me. I've only seen temps into the mid range of what you mention, probably because the kiln operators I know process only high end hardwoods and don't want to damage their product. I make mostly axe handles, spoons, and bowls, and in my personal experience, anything done to try to accelerate drying will increase the chances of warping and/or cracking.

Clay Hayes and Provision longbows are the primary guys I will follow along with a couple others. Ammons had a good vision and start but as soon as he started saying "he invented this" or "I came up with this idea" he lost me. Many of his recent bow builds were copies without credit to the originator or that it was someone elses and the new string "he invented" thats been done by many and been around since the 60's that was it for me. There are a few good ones but if you pay attention you can see who is legit and who really isnt..

Oh thanks for adding Provision Longbows! I forgot! I know what you mean about Ammons, but at the end of the day he is just trying to market his business to feed his family. The string invention was rough though. I’ve seen so many people do the exact same thing. Seemed like click bait. He started out in his garage and has built a pretty awesome business, so he has my respect for that.

A survival bow, in a survival situation is exactly as it sounds. It's the bow you need in that instant to hunt or to protect yourself in a survival situation. It's something that is used to fill a NEED at the time, if it's a greenstick bow or a bundle bow and it kills me something to eat or protects me then I don't care if i have to make a bow a day. It's a survival situation, that's the key, it just has to work in the moment to supply the immediate need. You talk about the bow lasting for 8 months! who cares how it's made if it lasts that long in your so-called survival situation!

I am genuinely confused by your response. I think you misunderstood or perhaps didn’t listen… I’m not saying fire hardening can’t work, which I say in the video. Here is a quote from the video “you can get an amazing product”. I even recommend a channel at the end whose main teachings are on fire hardening (Beckum Outdoors). Your offense makes zero sense. Maybe instead of being hyper sensitive and taking something as a personal assault, open your ears and listen. Presenting factual information -wood porosity increases if you fire harden or speed dry it- should not be taken as a personal offense. Presenting information in a scientific manor is never meant to be insulting. It is only meant to inform. Just to be ultra clear, I do not know you and I surely meant no offense. I hope this clarifies, and helps to subdue any frustration. That wasn’t my intention.

I quit watching after dreamcraft was mentioned lol. Maybe if he gets more than 3 bows at an honest full draw and at least the last few had something other than paracord for a string. Surface finish on the wood is also subpar. Too much hyped up sponsored clickbait, hard pass....

Bro that was brutal! I know what you mean from his earlier stuff (it used to frustrate me that none of the bows seemed to be above a 35lb draw), but I think he is better now. @LiveWhatYouLove23 nah seriously I watched the whole thing and your video is pretty decent. Personally, I just call it as I see it, nobody is perfect but, making a how to book when you're obviously just learning and grasping for views is a sham to the rest. Hopefully, he continues learning like all of us and realizes that this is an art and skill developed over years, not just what gamers want to see. There are many great bowyers I frequently interact with and besides getting others interested, none seem to take him seriously because of the aforementioned. Promoting what he is currently doing is a disservice to those with real talent. You want to learn the secrets, follow someone like Weylin Olive, Santana or Clay Hayes, like you said.. Other than that I actually enjoyed the video and you responding.
