As a black man I can tell you that almost nobody black was bothered by Dan Akroyd in blackface. We thought it was funny as heck. Movies used to fight racism with humor by showing how stupid it was. Now everyone is way too over sensitive.

Exactly. I don’t know any black person that was offended by this. White people seem more offended by it than black people. As a black man I don’t think this is racist. Much like porn I may not be able to define it but I know it when I see it and this ain’t it!!! Classic movie.

Same, I wasn't offended by that but I think it's to do with how things were decades before that movie was released where you didn't really get many black people onscreen and it was common to see white people with their faces painted black to portray that which many people at the time had a problem with it and honestly, can't blame them when they could has used a black person for that role but it was a different time back then and thankfully, it's not like that now.

I love the story of how Don Ameche was cast in the movie. John Landis wanted a star from the ‘40s, and thought of Ameche. His casting director thought that Ameche was dead, so Landis did some digging and found him, called him, and asked him to come in and read. He hadn’t made a movie in over a decade, and Landis later asked him why. Ameche had been doing local dinner theater. He told Landis, “Well, nobody called!” as for why he had not been working. And this movie kickstarted the second half of his career.

Ralph Bellamy, who played Randolph Duke, was a pretty decent star of Hollywood's golden age, though he tended to get stuck playing the forgettable "other man" who the leading lady would dump in favor of the movie's big star. It's nice that he got more noticeable roles like this in his old age (and don't worry, he was nothing like the Dukes in real life and would even only say the n- and f-words once due to how uncomfortable he felt about them).

Some fun facts about some of the supporting actors: 16:28 Did hairline dude's voice seem familiar at all? That's Frank Oz. He was with Jim Henson and the Muppets almost since the beginning. For years he voiced and operated Fozzy Bear, Miss Piggy, Bert, and a bunch of others. He also voiced and operated Yoda. He is also a great director. He directed movies like Spies Like Us (another awesome comedy with Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase). He also directed Little Shop of Horrors which if you haven't seen, you definitely have to! Also, did you recognize the butler? That's Denholm Elliot, he was Marcus Brady in Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. The (original) guy in the gorilla costume is Jim Belushi who was in some really good movies that have sadly been mostly forgotten... The Principal Mr. Destiny K-9 Taking Care Of Business Curly Sue Red Heat (with Arnold Schwarzenegger) The Man With One Red Shoe (with Tom Hanks) The stoner guys who were.supposed to be in charge of the gorilla(s)...the shorter one, that's actor-comedian-writer Al Franken who later became U.S. Senator Franken from Minnesota (until he was.pressured to resign because of a stupid picture taken of him back in his comedian days where he was pretending to touch a woman's breasts over her clothes). Great reaction! So glad you watched this movie! Best Regards!

The blackface scene is an utterly hilarious bit that would absolutely not fly today because of misplaced wokitude. It works BECAUSE it is insane. Valentine comes in with a lunatic "Cameroon" accent; then Coleman with his wildly broad "Irish" accent. Then Ophelia as Inga from "Sweden" with lederhosen. So Winthorpe topping it all with outrageous blackface as an utterly unconvincing Jamaican is just pure gold. I am so happy that it exists, even if it never could now. Staggeringly funny stuff.

The way director, John Landis places people and synchronizes the actors and extras at certain points is brilliant to me. Example: When the officers pull guns on Valentine all at once when he's on the floor after running around with Winthorpe's briefcase. The guns were in a perfect circle.

Just to clarify, The original intent of blackface has a good article on Wikipedia which shows: "Blackface is a form of theatrical makeup used predominantly by performers of non-African descent to portray a caricature of a dark skinned person of African descent.".... Caricatures are offensive by their very nature. They are meant to insult the target (person of African descent). Once people started to become oversensitive, they started considering ALL things of that nature as blackface... regardless if the intent was racist or not. This is part of the problem with today's society... lack of critical thinking skills. Instead of teaching kids HOW to think, they indoctrinate them into a specific FORM of thinking that is rigid and unyielding and overly sensitive about most subjects. In this film, specifically, he was not portraying a caricature, but a character and for a specific purpose which has nothing to do with racism. Another good example of blackface (but in this case used to highlight the inherent racism in the original song) is by Taco - Puttin' on the Ritz (kzread.info/dash/bejne/fZuYuLeypde_oag.html)

Nyarj... Not all caricatures are meant to insult the target. Ie. think about the street artists that you can get to draw a caricature of your own face, with exaggerated features. So it really depends on the intent behind it.

16:25 The guy there that you said had quite a hairline is none other than director and Muppeteer Frank Oz. He was extremely close to Jim Henson and helped build the Muppets into the success they became. He was the original performer and voice of Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Animal and Bert/Grover/Cookie Monster of Sesame Street, to name a few. He also directed the movies "What About Bob?," "Little Shop of Horrors" (the Rick Moranis version) and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." So he is pretty prolific, to say the least.
