Do y'all think the motor mounts broke letting the engine spin in the frame then breaking the transmission off? I've seen and had things break but that was wild. Looked like the tractor body slammed its own engine. I've seen the pressure turned up too high and blow the heads off or push the crank plumb thru the oil pan , but never an engine being thrown all the way out.

Phil Lowman The motor mounts are still in the truck with the lower half of the block. You see that image of the engine sitting on the ground in front of the truck? Those are the bottoms of the cylinders. Looks like too much cylinder pressure split the block?

mikeshotrodshop , correct Mike I've seen a similar failure on a test bed cylinder block fatigue failure due to high cylinder pressures over stressing block. fatigue cracks occur then a fatigue failure is eventually the result.

Yep, gray cast iron won't tolerate any cracks. The cylinder pressure was too high, and the block failed just above the crankcase. The crank, pistons, and rods were still in the frame. I was there and saw the engine flop out of the truck. Best tractor pulling engine explosion I've ever seen. Diesel pullers have to count the number of pulls on a given block, then throw it away. Something like 20 runs.

I've often thought that guy's control of the sled could play a part in if someone has a smooth or juttery run. The juttery runs are where shit tends to break, someone he doesn't like, might ride the brakes a little and see how strong his motor really is.

Not very. They are geared for pulling, and the chassis aren't set up for high speed. See how his chassis flexes when the first one flips over? And those little tiny wheels on the front are only meant for low speed moving around. Build one with different chassis, gearing and steering...and you basically have a Top Fuel dragster (although they prefer a single, really powerful motor, since they need high hrosepower and light weight, not massive torque and high weight to help with traction. Built for two similar yett opposite jobs.

How the freak does that truck basically barf out its engine? The shock of the sled stopping, would that not snap the drive shaft first? Maybe the torque of the engine is so extreme that when the sled stops, the engine basically twists itself loose from the bell-housing, and from its engine mounts, and then the forward inertia of the truck shoots the now loose engine out the front? Do I have this right? (Not up on pulls generally, but have some knowledge of mechanics.)

I've seen intakes fly and super chargers go sky high, but have never seen a whole motor decide to say fuck this and jump out of its own home. I mean I've seen engines being tossed from wrecks but damn!!

You gear them all together. Google "geared crankshaft". I think "geared engine" will give you something else. See 3:52, the long shafts that come back from each engine to a metal case in front of the wheels? Those are driveshafts, and there are gears inside the metal case that combine the power into a shorter third shaft that powers the wheels. In a four engine setup, it's the same, but instead of long driveshafts, you put another pair of engines here, and bolt the rear of the crank of the front engine to the of the crank of the rear engine (or you use two combiner gearboxes and a long central driveshaft). On a five-engine type you use gears to send the power of the front engine into the cranks of the first pair, or you attach the front crank directly to the long central driveshaft. With the long shaft and dual combiners there is more weight, but with attached crankshafts, you are putting an extra engine and a half worth of power through the rear crank, which can destroy it.

Not sure if this is true, but a tractor puller once told me that the engine that sits in the front has no drive shaft. It's the fuel pump for the rest of the engines....

That was true back in the early days, when these custom built engines were SO inefficient that they required a 700 HP fuel pump.

How do you one-up throwing a rod? Throw the whole engine.
