Tracking MBTA Commuter Rail horns and their rolling museum of GM power.

Ойын-сауық

We start with an important public service message. We have a thrilling day on the “North Side” of the T Commuter Rail where many of their 2nd generation rebuilt EMD’s roam. If you see an old guy around Boston with foam up to his neck, it’s probably me after a visit to the “North Side”. We see many F40PH-3C’s and GP40MC’s including the Massdot painted #1125. We fortunately see only a few of those mechanically challenged Garfield engines. They do have great unrestricted K5LA horns though and we hear much pleasant music from the locos and cab cars alike. We start out visiting Chelsea station with its many railroad crossings where horns are sounded. We later head to the north end outside North Station where we see a heavy duty fashion show of classic EMD’s. Enjoy!!!

I remember when the RDC cars ran from North Station until 1978 when the 1978 Blizzard cause some problems with the RDC cars and the MBTA leased from the B & M RR the GP-7’s for passenger service then there were the FP -10 engines both HEP and steam engines until there was more new commuter rail cars from Pullman to replace some of the RDC cars then the rebuild RDC pull and push cars came one time there were some X - New Haven passenger cars that were rebuild with HEP ran out of North Station then the MBTA leased some commuter rail cars from GO transit from Canada they replace the X - NH RR commuter rail cars that were sent back to the south side ( South Station ) the GO commuter rail cars were always with a FP - 10 engine that ran out of the North Station those were the good old days from North Station

Always kinda bugged me how the MBTA mixes and matches those passenger cars. I guess I just like things to be in order. But hey, whatever works. What would really make me happy is if they electrified at least some of the system. Great video, as always!

On one of these Boston trips you should seriously railfan at Readville sometime. You have the fairmount line terminating on one track, the Franklin line branching off on another track and the northeast corridor as well with Amtrak, Stoughton, and Providence/Wickford Junction line trains as well.

I didn’t because I was using the Commuter Rail to travel. Trains on the Providence line don’t stop at Readville.

Hey there Tim it's me Robert and I hope that you had a great 4th of July so far and I saw your video on tracking MBTA commuter rail horns and I was impressed about your video and for one of your viewers @joeylovestrains about Really hope they mean the northside should be electric meaning catenary poles with poles like southside of Boston south station I agree and they should have it period that's my opinion. God bless Robert Roman

Thank you for this great video ! I am amused you dislike the MPI (Garfield !) locos, but the MBTA could have specified EMD prime movers for them, just like Metra in Chicago, and even SunRail in Orlando. It is said they chose the GE FLD motor as it is very fuel efficient, and has low emissions. You will have to revisit Chicago soon , as Metra are now receiving their rebuilt SD70MACs, which of course retain their EMD prime movers !

I've read about Amtrak's converted Baggage Car/Engine. Now that I've seen it, it's not bad. I guess cost efficiency works this time. And a friendly wave from the engineer to boot.

Im pretty sure the GE parts and Motive Power production was probably to fulfill some "made in the USA" thing. I dont see whats wrong with that though, sure they had problems initially as do most new locos.

Great video! I heard you mention what chaos a bridge malfunction would cause, the original bridge actually burned down in the past and they had to setup for another north station as the one you saw today was literally cut off from the rest of the North Side.

That happened in 1984 I believe. They had to setup a temporary station near Sullivan square for two years for the North Shore trains and Lowell trains. I believe that the haverhill trains terminated at Oak Grove and Fitchburg line at Porter during this outage.
