Tracking DNA Matches with Airtable - A Step-By-Step Tutorial

Nicole Elder Dyer shares how to use her Airtable base template, Research Like a Pro with DNA, in order to keep track of DNA matches. In this video, she talks about using the free Airtable plan to keep track of DNA matches relevant to your research objective for a finite project. Put the research objective in the base guide, then list your test-takers, then start adding DNA matches. You can access the 2023 template here: www.airtable.com/universe/exp...

Hi Nicole, you mentioned that you use Airtable to help specific research questions, but you don't use it to track all of your matches from all of the companies. For that, you said that you would use a spreadsheet. Could you explain a little about your reasoning with that? Also would love to see an example of what your workbook structure looks like (worksheets, column headers, etc). Thank you. I enjoy your podcast and your RLP with DNA book has been very helpful. 🙂

What about a video on using the timeline and research log for documentary research

Wondering why you don't use look up fields or formulas or something to eliminate retyping or copy/pasting sources or citations

We only put our citations in one place in the log. If it's something we knew at the start of the project, it goes in the timeline with the applicable citation. If it's a source we found after making our research plan and following it, we cite that in our research log. The formula field could make citations for you, if you type in all the other required info for it, and that's an interesting idea. I will have to look into that!

Hey Nicole. This session was fantastic. Quick question - What is the difference in your table between labeling someone a "test taker" and labeling them a "DNA match"?

Hi there. I differentiate the two by thinking of test-takers as people whose DNA test results I have access to. DNA matches are those who match the test-takers.

Hi Nicole. Thanks for some great information. Airtable won't let me open either of your links in this description and they aren't showing up when I search you in the Universe. Any thoughts? Cheers

There's an error with Airtable right now, but Airtable let me know they are fixing it and it should work soon.
