Tracking Accounts in YNAB | Part 2: Adding Assets + Retirement Accounts

We budget the dollars we have, but what about all those others loans and investments? Meet YNAB's simplistic way of keeping an eye on your overall net worth: tracking accounts. In this two part series, learn how adding tracking accounts may benefit or detract your budget, how to manage liabilities (part I), and how to track your assets (part II) within your YNAB budget.

    I have my savings as a tracking account because I do not want it to be budgeted. It’s money that’s for an emergency, or I save up for vacations in there. Then when I go on vacation I move money from savings into my vacation budget line. It’s doing the trick for me 🤷‍♀️

    Yay! We finally get to meet Hannah's pup 🐕😍 Q: I've added my asset accounts as a linked account but I've noticed the balance in YNAB doesn't change, but the balance in my asset accounts has changed. What is YNAB checking for when it refreshes the connection? Do I still need to reconcile for interest even though it's a linked account?

    @ 2.03 What witchery is this??? 🤩 what a neat way to use adjustment s Please do a video about using adjustments - they make me anxious. Does it matter if you have lots of them, so long as budget and bank balance are reconciled? Can a memo be attached? ( did anyone else know that ‘budget’ means little leather pouch?! from Old French bougette, diminutive of bouge ‘leather bag’, from Latin bulga ‘leather bag, knapsack’, of Gaulish origin. Compare with bulge. The word originally meant a pouch or wallet, and later its contents. In the mid 18th century, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in presenting his annual statement, was said ‘to open the budget’. ) Another fun and helpful video, Hannah, thanks 🙏🏻

    i know I’m coming in late to this video - but as someone who’s finally making the move to investing long term - and my wife now has a 403b though the state - we’re tracking that stuff and it’s good to know about not linking it due to the changes. I was wondering about that since it fluctuates. And I just had that internal thought in my head - do I need to budget for that money I’m sending to Betterment for our savings account and our emergency fund account in there? I was 90% certain - but this answered that for sure. Thanks again.

    I love how all your videos are so easy to understand! I was wondering, if I have an emergency fund in a separate savings account, should I have this emergency fund as a budget account or as an asset in a tracking account? I don't want to have this money "available" and allocated where it then can get mixed up with other things. What would be your advice? Thanks!

  • @YNABofficial

    @YNABofficial

    3 жыл бұрын

    Jorge-we are encourage you to side step the asset account and add your emergency fund to your budget. You budgeted those dollars to your emergency fund, and should you ever need to steal from it you'll want to be able to categorize it to the appropriate category (and see those money movement reflected in reports if that's important to you!). What we *do* highly recommend is making a whole category titled "Emergency Fund" where all of that money lives (I even went to the extra length to make a category group titled "Emergency" then a category inside titled "Emergency Fund" so I can collapse it and keep it out of sight out of mind. Just make sure that the total in that savings account always matches the total in your "Emergency Fund" category penny for penny and it should be relatively easy to leave that money untouched! -Hannah :)

    First off... Totally agree with everyone that you are awesome Hanna! Pre-YNAB I had multiple high yield savings accounts for different savings goals (Vacation, 3 month savings, Car expenses) that I transfer money to each month from my checking account. How should I account for these in YNAB? Do I just add the category as a "Needed for Spending" and then record the in/out of money? I would like to age of my money grow. Thanks!

  • @jayhamlin3586

    @jayhamlin3586

    3 жыл бұрын

    I do something similar to this but I only have one high yield account I transfer from. Each month I transfer what I need for the month from this high yield account to my working checking account. When the money appears in my checking account and YNAB I first assign it to To Be Budgeted. I then transfer to the appropriate accounts in YNAB. So, for Car Expenses you would transfer what you need for car expenses for the month from savings to your checking account and then assign the money to a YNAB account called car expenses. I always transfer to To Be Budget first as this helps with reports.

  • @YNABofficial

    @YNABofficial

    Hey there!! For your example, if you're wanting to take the money you've been saving up in a "down payment" bank account and move it into your checking account, first things first: you'll want to make sure you initiate the actual transfer at the bank (because YNAB doesn't actually *move* money, it just records money movement). Then, to reflect this movement of money in your budget, click "Add Transaction" in your down payment account, and make the payee "To/From: Checking Account" or whatever account you're wanting to move the money from, making sure to record the total as an *outflow.* Finally, to complete the transfer, go into your budget's checking account and you'll find a brand new transaction waiting for your approval, with the payee being "To/From: Down Payment Account" and the amount recorded as an *inflow*. This is because we need to record the money moving OUT of the down payment account, and also record it moving INTO the checking account. I hope this answers your question, Olivia! 🌻 Hannah

  • @YNABofficial

    Hey Eliana! We always encourage you to reconcile each and every account here and there, even if the account is linked! Especially for accounts that change based on the day/economy. For example, my 401K account is linked, but since the interest rate is changing all the time, the amount is constantly changing no matter how often/little I deposit into it. So I go in and reconcile once a week or so just to make sure I'm up to date on where it stands. Hope this helps! 🌻 Hannah

    You just transfer the money back to a budgeted account (whichever account you deposited the money into) . When you do so, YNAB will want to know which budget category to assign the funds to, or you can just place it into To Be Budgeted.

  • @nosirrahm

    @nosirrahm

    Are your sinking funds in a different account? I have them added as tracking because my sinking funds are sitting at a different institution that doesn’t have a link to YNAB. I transfer the funds to those accounts in YNAB after I started the transfer between accounts. YNAB DID give me the ability to breakdown those goals accounts down a little more by allowing me to see that my annual Disney+ subscription will be funded in time from my Subscriptions sinking fund when it hits my credit card. I’m probably explaining this with massive confusion - sorry!

    Haniel, it's a great idea to reconcile all accounts! I personally check on my more active accounts, like checking or savings, every 3 or so days to reconcile (it makes it take 5 minutes instead of 45 😉), and with asset or liability accounts I check in on em every 3 or 4 weeks, especially if they are accumulating interest or anything. You want to make sure your budget is reflecting accurate totals. Reconciliation just brings more clarity, so it's always better to reconcile more often than not! -Hannah 🌻

    You can link it. I have mines linked. But it probably won't auto update the balance/import transactions since it's an investment account (due to YNAB moving to another import partner). So this is probably why they recommend having them unlinked.

    I know it’s super petty but how would you suggest using a loaded “ gift card “ For example Wawas. I put money into the card and buy my lunch with the card because it gets me free items and discounts when pay this way. Or a Starbucks card for the same reason. How would I show the amount loaded onto the card vs what I actually bought for lunch ?

  • @petrahuijts147

    @petrahuijts147

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'm not from YNAB, but I see two options: 1. Add the gift card in your budget. Transfer money there when you load the card, record spending whenever you buy something with it. If you actually get cash back or something like that, you can track that as incoming money on the card. 2. Don't add the gift card anywhere. See the fact that you load it up with money as the moment that you spend money (on lunch, in this case). Now you will for example spend $30 for lunch on Monday and spend nothing on lunch until say the next Tuesday, when you put new money on the card. That is not exactly what is happening in reality. But in the long run, over the months, it will still show you how much you generally spend on lunch during the month.

  • @amyelynch1

  • @jayhamlin3586

    In YNAB, I would treat gold jewels in a similar way that I would treat any asset that is not used in my monthly budget. It would be a tracking asset account called something like Gold Jewels and the current value is assigned to it. Every so often, like once a year, you can modify the latest assessment of the asset using Reconciliation. It is then included in your Net Worth, but it is not part of your monthly budget.

    Wendy, I create a savings account for the loan. So technically YNAB thinks that I have the money even though I lent it to another person. You can think of it like you took the money and put it in a bank account that you have limited access to. As I receive payments back on the loan, I just treat them as a transfer from that account to whatever account you placed the money you received. Since these are account to account transfers, you don't specify any budget category to apply the transaction to. If you also receive interest on the loan, I just add transactions to the loan account and apply those amounts to the proper budget category (interest earned, for example).

    @@MaxGrey03 Another option would be to have the loan as an "Asset" tracking account. That way, you're not including cash you don't have in your budget.

    @@GajitUK Actually, that is exactly what I do. My initial response was poorly worded. I forgot that the tracking accounts were divided into asset and liability rather than the budgetary ones of checking/saving/credit card etc. Also, when I mention that it allows YNAB to think I have the money what I meant was that it allows YNAB to show it in my Net Worth reports as a positive. I can see looking back that I was implying that YNAB would treat that cash as part of my budget.

    Rather then just reconcile the none tracking account cant we just add a transaction to it? Say my employer pays into my pension before I get paid, be nice to see that amount per month.

    Yes...I would like to hear from YNAB about this too!! Can't we just add a transaction for our car loan interest or when our employer adds money? YNAB please tell us if this is wise or not! Thanks

    Personally, I treat tracking accounts just like any other account. That is, I add whatever transactions occur and reconcile versus my monthly statements just as I do for my regular checking account. So, I have entries for employer contributions, dividends/interest earned, etc. The main difference you notice when doing this in a tracking account as opposed to a budget account is that YNAB will not ask you to categorize the money (that is, you don't apply the funds to any budget categories, at least until you transfer the funds into a budget category).

    The point is that the Tracking Account is really outside the monthly budget so in YNAB it isn't as critical as a Budget Account. Adding every transaction is perfectly fine, but it is optional. Using Reconciliation allows you to quickly modify the value to a current value without needing to worry about the details.

    I'm also thinking it just doesn't work well for investment accounts, because the market is changing the balance, not transactions.

    But it's certainly possible to have a tracking account that is linked. I keep my emergency fund in a high yield savings account that's a linked tracking account. This way my monthly interest automatically pops up!
