Where I get stuck in this process is understanding that I am in my 20s, investing/saving 35% of my 70K income for retirement…but how do I truly know it will be enough to FIRE? For example, How can project the annual salary I need to live a certain lifestyle in 20-25 years considering inflation, the unknown cost of living, and how my lifestyle and expenses could change like let’s say if I bought a house? I am so ‘young’ and renting right now with no children, etc.. do you know if this rule of thumb accounts for inflation?

Yes, the numbers can be quite different when you add inflation into the calculation, especially the younger you are now or the younger you plan to retire. Both of those things can multiply the required net worth for FIRE.

It’s using after-tax income. That’s why it’s scaleable to any income level. So you’re closer than you think! Also you could double check by just running the math. The original charts and a sample spreadsheet are available from a Mr Money Mustache article in 2012 “The Shockingly Simple Math Behind Early Retirement.” That’s where Andrei’s chart is from. It’s good to create your own spreadsheet, too, so you can adjust the numbers!

6:29 The numbers are a bit misleading, especially at the high end of percent of savings because if I do make 40k/year and I do save all of them, that dosn't mean that I can retire instantly. 40k in total savings won't be enough to retire.

My income varies a lot, but so far this year, my savings rate was 48%

If you plan on retiring early..from age 20-25 try to get 40k in your 401k so it can compound till your 60..then lower your contributions.. open a brokerage account so you can access that money at 45 or 50 years old..that will allow you to live on the money from brokerage account until you are 60

The one thing that you are accounting for is inflation. accounting for roughly 2-3% inflation yearly and calculating how long your car is calling out to the year, you will reach your fire number.
