Here’s a helpful tip that no one seems to mention: if you’re having trouble finding the parents or children of a deceased relative, look for their obituary, most funeral homes will post these online and they will include the deceased predecessed relatives (parents, children, siblings). They will also usually include the “survived by” members of the family from spouses to grand children

I love FamilySearch as I've found my English ancestors. I'm Australian and have discovered another little nugget of information it's called Trove which is basically all of our Newspapers thrown into one great big one. I found out how my Grandfather died after he had a motorbike accident, it gave the gory details as spoken by the Ambulance officers. I've also found Wedding details right down to what the Bride wore and what Flowers she carried. Sorry for the long comment, I just had to share my little bit. Great suggestion to have FamilySearch & Ancestry open at same time. I have a 40" < $250 TV monitor as a 2nd monitor. Using two monitors allow you to have both sites visible at the same time. Connecting a TV to a laptop involves an HMDI cable and using Windows P.

If you have not taken a DNA test, do so at Ancestry. You can get them on sale during the holidays for about $59. Then, learn how to group your DNA matches. I have several videos on how to do this. Eventually, you'll figure out your bio family.

West Virginia records *are* excellent. Especially if you have Dotsons or Dodsons in your family . Sometimes I think we are all related, and it's through Rogers, Waldo, Pace and Dodson :D The only problem I see over and over is that many people don't know that West Virginia didn't become a separate state from Virginia until 1862. West Virginians didn't want to leave the Union, so they left Virginia. I love these people! So watch for dates. Ancestry and Find A Grave (now owned by Ancestry) are awful about three dates: 1776- Nothing before September 1776 is "The United States". I was a History buff then teacher before I was in Genealogy, and it's kind of shocking that people don't know 1776. Second, 1802. That's when Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland became the United Kingdom. Third, mostly 1862. I always check when a place became a state in the U.S. There are people who know when every county in every state came into existence, but my brain can't handle that :0) God bless Google!

Do these sites use dna to link families? Asking because my family's surnames spelling was changed at Castle Garden when they came to America so I'll be searching for two different names essentially.

Some of them do you use DNA to help show how your family could be linked together but not definitively proof. You need to do the research to determine that. It is unlikely that your families name was changed at Castle Garden, it often happened after they arrived in the United States. That’s an old myth.

Great info I've got approximately 500 years of Paternal side history but only approximately 100 years of Maternal. Both sides came from Switzerland. What is the best source for European information?

Family Search does!! I have records from Germany, England and a few from Sweden found there. Or you can buy the new "global" account at Ancestry. But I always check my work at several sites, so you may as well start at Family Search.

Keep digging... but you may have run out of the paper trail. You may find more with deep DNA research... like getting into haplogroups. That is best done at FamilyTreeDNA.

No you can't download from FamilySearch... only the other guys. FS is one huge world tree, so it would be impossible.

Like any genealogy you want to start with what you know and document it well. If you find you have enslaved ancestors research them as well as the enslaver. Ancestry has a lot of records for African-American and enslaved research.

My question is if you do not sign up any one to contributed on your tree and your tree is public then another member/non can not change your tree? Like removing people.

I’m not sure which service you’re talking about. On Ancestry, no one can change anything on your tree without your permission. On FamilySearch anyone can.

My family has an incredibly rare last name. I actually haven’t found a single living person online with my last name that isn’t one of my family members but my problem is that I can’t trace my lineage back any further than my great great grandpa. I found something saying he was born in Canada and died in Massachusetts is there any chance they would have changed his names spelling when going from Canada to US. Supposedly my father heard that he came here from either cork or Clare county Ireland as well (he had that side of my family confused with my grandmothers so he wasn’t sure which side was from which part of Ireland) but it seemed weird to me that the families oral history said he came from Ireland while the records show Canada. Any advice on how I could find some of these answers out I’m feeling more confused about my family tree then I was before I started researching. Any help is much appreciated thank you

Not My Name... love your handle BTW.. It's possible that they migrated from Ireland to Canada first... then crossed into the US by land. Look for immigration records in Canada. Also... do some basic searches on FindMyPast (known for their Irish records) to see if there are others with same unique name. Having a rare names is helpful when researching... as opposed to Smith, Jones, or Davis. Also look for immigration records into the US from Canada. Yes they may have changed their names. Look for the family members and their ages to help find others in the same group in other records with other names. These are usually similar names like my ancestors emigrated as Jensen but once here in the US they changed their name to Johnson a few years later. Look for variations of the name.

Are there any tips to try to narrow down family members in maternal line? My maternal grandmother was adopted and I feel like now I am just doing the same things over and over. Thank You for any help- She was adopted betwn 1910-1920 I have checked state of Ohio they didnt save or cross ref records that early. Using DNA is likely going to be your best bet in this situation. Group your DNA matches along that branch of the family. Use mtDNA too. If you find someone close in atDNA, then offer to pay for an mtDNA. Learn mtDNA strategies to make sure you understand how it works. It's different than any other DNA test.

I highly recommend doing a DNA test, especially at Ancestry. You'll find cousins and then figure out how you are connected eventually.

For American Indian research, there are special census rolls. Go on Ancestry and search for "Native American" and "Indian" records in the keyword field.

Probably a silly question, but should I only have one family tree that follows both of my parents families and both of their parents and grandparents etc all in the same tree?

Not a silly question at all. I have one primary tree for everything. Occasionally if I have a client i’ll make a second tree. I believe in one primary tree, I keep mine on Ancestry, and then I use other trees on other platforms for research. But I do not bother keeping up on all of those trees, only when I’m researching a specific line.

I am at family search every day. I'm happy to help. My Great Uncle was a Genealogist in the 1980s and '90s, and I'm kind of carrying all that on. But it's more fun now to help other people. I'm wondering if I can post a link so people can write me there. If just comment and I'll check my Gmail. The more people -- sorry if this sounds awful -- that you can add who have passed away? That helps the most. Start with yourself, of course, then your parents & grandparents. The most helpful thing I learned is *not* to only do a direct line - Your Grandparents, Great Grands, etc. If you add every sibling, you can often find records attached to the sibling that you need to fill in the blanks.

Go to Ancestry.com click Search, drop down to Card Catalog, search the Keyword Jamaica, you will find 39 sets of records. Sort by record count in the upper right corner. You will find Jamaica Civil Registrations Births, Marriage, and Death Records 1878-1995 as the top with nearly 8 million records. Try searching each record set in the list for the ancestors you know. I hope that helps.

Only from my mum i know, because my mum family only have at least 6 child but from my dad, i only know my massive family, and actually i was so confusing for found it, 12 to 15 child in one generation is so insane so i dont remember, and they are originally from china but myb transmigrated to europe, Australia, America and myb to other country in asia... And my dad never mant to tell it... Only my grandpa tell it but its too short fron know, because my grandpa had died a year ago so i cant ask it again 😂... I wait for my uncle madw the generation, it tooks maybe more than one year to complete it... Luckily they still using old chinese name, first word is surname, second word is generation name, last word is name... Not too easy to find it...

If you have a FamilySearch account go to RelativeFinder.com. It might show you how you might be related but you need to verify the links in records.

I've tried trials of all the sites mentioned. There just doesn't seem to be a whole lot of records of my family. Or maybe they haven't been uploaded by users yet. Paying for the subscriptions is a waste because it seems like the only info they have is what was uploaded by other users. These sites collect money by the free labor of the community.

My biological father died in prison and nobody seems to know what prison so I’m having trouble finding any information on his death. I did find his mugshot. I’m trying to trace both of his parents ancestry. I know that him, his dad and his mom all died from heart attacks.

So frustrating to find people who add every child they find with parents of the same name assuming it's the same family. I have one Irish family that someone on FamilySearch had added children from Minnesota, Ireland, NY, Chicago, and Massachusetts. The parents had lived their entire lives in a small town in Massachusetts. It took me months to straighten that out--only to have someone come and change things again! At that point I went to Ancestry and use FS for a resource only. Be warned!

You see i have a discrepancies or a slight problem, my problem ( Oh yea i would like to mention the fact that i am from N.C born and raised) is a few centuries of slavery that is making this difficult for me to find out my family. One gigantic and damn near conspiracy type of misconception is that all black people were brought here in the 17 and 1800's for slavery from Africa and one thing about the census that I noticed that was left out was how many Black people were here in America and spoke several different languages and dialects of Latin and English and mainstream is calling us liars and they call the elders that tell us this liars and the fact that when i was told this I was a small child and i use t go to school and when my teacher would give us the narrative and dialog on Columbus I would interject and quote or paraphrase what was conveyed to me by my family and both of my grandmothers had Indian my fathers side the most with red skin features and all with high cheek bones not indicative to Africa at all and im not one of those who is ashamed of the motherland i was wanting to be from there to visit but i found out I am AMERICAN and my family has been here b4 European even knew who Americans was except it wasn't called America My people called it "Turtle island they believer that the earth was on the back of a giant turtle traveling through the ether and dark matter and this is by black people of this time not the Indians it was also called that by the people that lived in the Meso or the pacific Indies but my point is that your method doent work but for one race almost if you didn't carry a paper trail then you have to go by word of mouth but when you go word of mouth people discredit you and call you liars but when a whole generation says the same thing and they still discredit it makes you wonder the Real Agenda of these gate keepers we just want to keep out the next generation up to date o there lineage. One of the most factual statements I have ever heard was "the winners wright the history books" And every losers history book defines thing a little bit more horrible then the winner and there tale of modest equal generous fair hero's with barrels of integrity just seem grim and fabricated when you hear accounts that held more detail and conviction. But then you get in you head and you think like what would you do if ships started to anchoring on you coast with armed men planes and helis just rushed you shore and they are unloading gear and weapons horses and more soldier like men and they start talking to you like a person would a child or a pet you try to make conversation and talk trade but they take and order around in stead then they gawk at your women making gestures but living with these invaders for months then more ships and planes show up and and now they are building and taking from your land and taking from your mouth and kids mouth and you notice someone saying something asking them to leave and they kill him and start killing everyone and taking land HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF THAT WAS AMERICA AND IT WAS CHINA DOING IT? NO ONE THINKS OF TRYS TO CONTEMPLATE ON HOW THE PEOPLE FELT ABOUT THIS INTRUSION THEY ALSO DONT CARE ALONG WITH THE PEOPLE OF AFGANASTAN SUDI ARABIA SYRIA IRAN AFRICA HAITI BUT AS SOON AS THE UKRANIE NEEDS HELP WE ARE AT THE DOOR STEP TRYING EVERTHING WE CAN TO GET IN WITH OUT STARTING WW3 SICK SAD WORLD AND THAT DRIVES MY KNOWING THAT MY HERITAGE WAS ROBBED AND ITS BEEN COVERED UP AND LIED ABOUT IM 40 YEARS OLD I AM ALSO autodidactic. that is over 17 years of asking researching and hitting dead completely dead ends.

In the Summer of 2022, there really is no free option with Ancestry. You can click on free trial, but before you even get started, it wants payment info. So that's out.

I am unable to see my tree on Ancestry for free. I put information on it from hard copies I ordered that were no online back then. Now I cannot see my tree.

S. Tate, do you have any Irish family? I have been researching Tates the past month. I agree with this comment so much. You won't find some "sin of the father" in the past that explains now this way. If you want some real advice from someone who forgives a parent on a daily basis? Take down the negative image you are using for your profile image. You don't have to pretend to be happy if you're not, but telling yourself that story over and over will guarantee you stay stuck in it.

That makes it easier to find sometimes. Search all variations too.

My grandpa liked to lie because we all have been told he's from Ohio and born there but he said he was born in Wyoming on his marriage certificate and his dad has 2 names he went by it looks like and I'm starting to think my family has some secrets they tried to bury cause my grandma's side is easy to find but my grandpa's gets complicated anybody got any tips cause I can't find anything past my great grandfather
