    I would add that before anyone does this the engine should be at normal operating temperature and normal idle (which I believe is ~8-900 rpm for the 3VZ in my 94 truck). I also read that you need to make sure the air-fuel mix is correct first before re-adjusting the timing. And most people seem to recommend advancing the timing on the 3.0L a little higher at 12 to 13 which is great for 87 to 89 octane fuel. Some people run it even higher at 14 and use 93 octane. And as you did, I would also install a fresh set of plugs and new cap and rotor first before doing this, and clean or replace the air filter too. I like the system to be "fresh" before checking timing. And lastly, I always look for cap/rotor with copper or brass terminals on both. They easily last twice as long and you can lightly clean off the ignition deposits with some 300 grit sandpaper which I do every 15-20k miles. The aluminum type is just junk in my opinion. PS - Given your accent.. do you work on Volvos lol? You sound Norwegian!

    @@RippSnortin Hey, not sure off-hand. I have the factory service manuals and go by whatever it says to do. I know the ECU manages a lot since it’s fuel injected by I know there is another device inside/above the air box that has some mechanical control that can wear out over time and remember specific threads of people adjusting it / fixing it.

    Dont you have to make the white mark when #1 piston is TDC? if yes, how did you determine it was at TDC?

  • @Nickvec

    @Nickvec

    4 жыл бұрын

    By having the electrical pickup attached to the #1 cylinder (which is where you always attach the pickup), the strobe only fires when that spark plug is firing. The numbers on the harmonic balancer and the flash indicate when the spark is firing relative to TDC. ***wait, I just figured out your question: There is a notch in the harmonic balancer and that is where the white mark is placed. Just turn the key for a fraction of a second and bump the engine and keep looking for the notch. So as the cylinder is near TDC that mark will be near the numbers when it fires. **** Now, if you were putting a new timing belt on the engine, you would hand crank the engine so cylinder #1 is at TDC and that mark is on 0 degrees before you take engine apart. Best to refer to a manual or Internet to make sure you do this correctly. Hope this helps.

    Mohammed Amer A timing light has three leads; two for power via battery leads, one to receive spark pulse. As the ignition wire is energized from the rotor, a pulse of light is emitted. The engine manufacture has a timing marks imprinted in the crankshaft. The “timing” of the light pulse will illuminate the “mark”. By rotating the distributor, one way will advance the timing while the opposite direction will retard when the ignition takes place during the combustion sequence. Precise timing of the detonation during the compression stroke will ensure optimum engine performance. Hope this helps!

  • @hellrazerblazer2

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well get a wrench and turn your harmonic balancer until it is at the recommended degree of timing and then check your cam shafts and make sure the notches are straight up and down that way you know the top and bottom of your engine are working together. Next take your distributer and makesure the rotor is facing the #1 on your distributer cap then install your distributer cap. Once that is on make sure that the #1 spark plug wire plug is facing the #1 cylinder. After that it should be timed but do double check with a light.
