Toyota Tundra TRD Pro is My Favorite Tundra | Still Has Some Issues Though

The New Toyota Tundra TRD Pro is my favorite trim of the new Toyota Tundra. After driving all models in a recent event including the Capstone, I think this one rides the best and delivers the best package.
In this video we'll take a look at the Tundra TRD Pro. I'll share with you why I think this is the halo model of tundra line up and not the capstone.

Always love your videos AMD! And it was nice to catch up with you last week! I love my Tundra TRD Pro for many reasons you pointed out, but still can't believe the "reverse D" defect I had on the hood emblem. It's definitely a solid truck and after driving the Ford F-150 and the Chevy Silverado this week side by side with the Tundra, it seems Toyota did its homework in coming up with a "balanced" truck that hits the sweet spot.

Thank you for the videos AMD. These trucks have issues and Toyota has really dropped the ball on quality control. I picked up my 2023 Platinum last week. It spent 4 out of the 8 days I had it at the dealership. Build date was 11/22. When I drove it home from the dealership I felt the suspension bottom out twice. Turns out that the air suspension was out of spec and it was not adjusted correctly from the factory per the dealership. They verified and performed a TSB for it. That fixed the issue. Then my A Pillar began to rattle incessantly. The dealer found that the clips were broken inside the A Pillar. The dealer put foam inside it because toyota told them they didn’t have the clips available to fix it due to shortages. The rattling continued. Then my center console got worse. They rattle straight out of the factory and it got worse in the 8 days I owned it. The dealer put felt inside. It helped by about 50%. On the way home from the dealership service the drivers side window started to whistle bad. I rolled it up and down many times and it wouldn’t go away. The next day I drove for about 2 hours and the front seats have a horizontal support bar positioned way too far back towards the seat back. If your anatomy isn’t just right, you’ll be sitting on a thinly padded bar. The seats are poorly designed with minimal padding. That was the last straw and I took a hit and sold it back to the dealer and lost a couple grand in the taxes I paid. Well worth getting rid of it. Toyota may get this right in a few years but I’d highly recommend staying away from this truck right now. We own a newer highlander and a Venza and they’re great. So im not a toyota hater. And I owned a 2004 tundra for 15 trouble free years waiting for this new generation. Very disappointing.

Wow that’s heart breaking and very upsetting ! I think you likely did the right thing getting rid of that truck sounds like possibly a lemon to me. I also own 2 Toyota products 2018 tundra and 2015 rx450 h Lexus and sold my 2006 tacoma and love them all with very little issues. I think Toyota will get their act together ,it may just take a couple years to get the bugs out! If they don’t get their act together people will shop elsewhere. I buy Toyota because of their reliability, and keep it simple style ,and will continue to do so until they stop being reliable, then I’m done!

I just haven’t warmed up to these new Tundra’s! From the total lack of recovery hooks on their “ Off Road” models to the wastegate issues on the turbo’s plus the fact that many 5.7 V8’s have gone over a million miles. No v6 turbo is gonna be stronger then a v8. V6 truck it’s not a factory choice, it’s the government choice. The more technology it’s on added to a vehicle the more parts are going to fail. If you drive like grandpa a v6 will give you better mpg then a v8 for sure, but if you are towing the v8 will be better. I used to have a 08 tundra and the mpg was horrible even driving like a grandpa So the problem it’s the government and technology. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@pelecho hi Antonio. I also love the V8 tundra. I have a 1917 and a 2021 and the 21 model gets pretty good mileage around 19 on the highway and 16 around town so that’s not too bad for a V-8. And I don’t drive like a grandpa. Even when I’m doing 90 miles an hour on the highway it’s still gets about 17 miles per gallon. There’s nothing wrong with that. The V6 turbo kick in at that mile Per hour and you get horrible mileage. I love my V-8 tundras.

Our father has a 2020 Tundra TRD. It is incredibly good. But we will never buy this new generation. No V8, two turbos and/or hybrid batteries to worry about after 200K-300K. Nobody knows how constant towing will treat those new technologies in 4-5 years. The cost cuts in the 2022 are also very noticeable. The famous interior rattles and squeaks reflect the cheap plastics you have shown. I have been very disappointed with Toyota quality ever since most of their 2018 models.

@TheMrDudiness Great comment. Unfortunately Toyota has fallen upon its old formula, using a hybrid more as a poor substitute for a super charger rather than for fuel saving. It would have been better if they used a system similar to the Rav-4 Prime that used the battery to give a powerful boost, and allow electric only operation for a few miles. This could have been done in place of a turbo, and the longevity of the V-6 might’ve been legendary. The turbo V-6 by the way was one of worst trouble spots mentioned by CU.

I wanted a Tundra for years; what's not to like about Toyota reliability, and full size truck capabilities? The issue is that I can not bring myself to pay the asking price for trucks for one; nor can I abide this move to turbo V6's as opposed to V8's. They are being marketed as equal power with more fuel efficiency, but the numbers I see don't bear that out. My V6 mini van get approximately the same gas mileage as my 6.2L LS powered car, and with that I get more torque and horsepower. The Tundra has been plagued with issues with the turbo since it was released; that in combination with "supply chain issues" and parts shortages means that you could pay upwards of 60 to 70, or even close 80k for a truck that may or may not be on the road long before a long down time. I get the warranty argument but down time means you're paying monthly payments and interest on a vehicle you can't even drive. I have a great friend that is as big a Toyota fan as I am and is so mad that he bought this truck. He paid about 68k, and put less than 5k miles on it before the turbo issue reared it's head and grounded him for 7 months. They supposedly had to remove the cab to get to the turbos and do the repair, and this was after months of waiting for parts. Part of the issues is this rush to push the green and renewable energy movement forward at a greater cost to the consumer. I am all for renewable energy and reduction of green house gases and pollution, but when the technology is ready and completely viable.

One of those 4 cylinder engines are very prone to oil overfilling. It damages one of the emission devices, or EGR valve? I forget the specifics. Expensive repair and wty won't cover unless you can prove a Toyota tech made the mistake. Read it here on You Tube in last 4 mo or so. Can't remember the channel but it's the guy that always teaches how much effect slanted driveways have on checking oil level. Also about not checking oil level cold due to heated volume expansion. CCN does this particular comment too. I wonder if it was CCN that did the piece on overfilling too..just can't remember. The takeaway though is to drain off overage as soon as you discover it. Definitely don't wait for 'next' oil change.

So, I wondered why you didn't show the location of the oil filter on the Tundra when I noticed the Tundra TRD Skid Plate does not appear to have the same door. @16:42 you said it best. "cheapness" I work for a Toyota Dealership and can confirm every one of your talking points, but when you mention 'cheapness' I smiled. Couldn't agree more... Toyota of today is not the same quality as Toyota of past. I assume this is a reason you left and opened up your dedicated Toyota shop.. Be blessed as always Ahmed and we appreciate your ongoing honesty! The 'feel' of a new Corolla is better than that of a new Tundra. New Sienna is the same. Corolla Cross feels more solid than a Tundra. I make a point of seeing where each model is made, Mexico, Texas, Indiana, Canada in Ontario, they all have a cheapness to them. Those made in Japan not so much. Pause @16:54 as you open the driver's door, the lower 'sill plate' is 2 piece, not one stamping as was on the prior Tundra. Although it lines up very well, it's still 2 piece. Oh, the rubber trim around the rear side glass, with the GAP, although better, still is an issue. Funny how it seems to affect the driver's side only. Have you discussed the TSB recall on re-torqueing of the rear end, to prevent brake line failure let alone wheels falling off? Did I forget to mention the blind-spots created by the side-view mirrors? LOL Cheers,

I had been holding off getting rid of my F150 and all of its dependability problems. When Toyota announced they were going to a short-lived V6 turbo or a hybrid to pull my four open an enclosed trailers, I went out and beat the bushes for a nice late model low mile tundra. my experience over the last 6000 miles with my 2020 tundra crew Max has been nothing short of wonderful. I took it on a trip from Central Illinois to western Montana and all of the different roads and speeds that it entails. I can care less about the gas mileage. I want horsepower torque, firm feel, comfort, safety, and this truck gives me all of those. The truck now has 30,000 miles on the odometer and I purchased it as a Toyota Certified preowned with the included Warranty’s. I am quietly looking for a last chance 2021 of the same styling and power. I know there are some out there with less than 5000 miles on them and I will just drag my feet to find one somewhere in the US. I believe the 2021 high horse high torque, gas, sucking tundra, is the last great pick up made for True pick up people with true pick up needs. By the way, I’m a former smalltown Chevrolet dealer and the Toyota dealer in Muscatine. Iowa does not charge any Jack fees, additional except a reasonable dock fee. They don’t force you to buy all the other crap like the Shottenkirk chain of stores and so many others.

Now i have a serious question and want some advice: I have purchased a new 2024 Tundra SR5 TRD off road crew cab. I have owned many Toyotas and all have been great, that said, I’m worried about this new twin turbo V6, and I want to keep my truck for a long time. I did NOT buy an extended warranty, but after watching a lot of KZread videos and forums, I’m doubting my decision. Do you recommend buying an extended warranty for these trucks? I have the non-hybrid engine, and thought by buying it I would be safer long term since there is less to go wrong. However, reports are the non-hybrid models are actually having more issues than hybrid, but not sure that’s true. Would you spend $2,500 for an extended warranty to protect a Gen 3 Tundra to 7yrs/100k miles through a dealer? I change my own oil, at 3-4K miles, and will at the dealer for 10k services, and will do all scheduled maintenance early, but even so do you think it’s worth having an extended warranty for this platform? I’m not rich, and $2,500 is a grip of money, but my local dealer will allow me to Finance the warranty at 0% interest for a couple years. What are your thoughts?? PLEASE HELP 😊
