Toyota Tacoma P0500 Trouble Code | Watch this before replacing that VSS/Vehicle Speed Sensor! | 2022

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

What does a Toyota Tacoma P0500 DTC/Diagnostic Trouble Code mean?
In this video I will be showing one way to diagnose a code P0500, possible VSS/Vehicle Speed Sensor on a Toyota Tacoma, and why just replacing the VSS/Vehicle Speed Sensor may not fix that P0500 code on your Toyota Tacoma.
It happens quite often without proper diagnosis, parts are thrown at a repair because of a particular code. I hope from this video you learn that throwing parts at a P0500 code won't necessarily fix it as you saw with this Toyota Tacoma. Many parts go into vehicle systems these days, and they are much more complex than cars of the past, as you will see I checked many parts of this Toyota Tacoma to get a proper diagnosis. As you will see I checked multiple vehicle data pids from vehicle speed, ABS system data, and onto physical parts within the harness and instrument cluster, but in the end we do fix the Toyota Tacoma P0500 issue. This diagnostic path should help diagnose similar P0500 troubles from other manufacturers.

Cody, I know this is an older post but I want to thank you for your clear explanation and diagnosing the code. I have a Lexus that throws the P0500 code (times three) and yet the car has been running fine for over a year. My speedometer operates fine. Hot damn, Cody is back with a nice screen overlay and some fancy edits! Great video, I love the process and you did an excellent job of explaining the process along the way! When you grabbed the signal at the ICM and it was GTG, I was thinking for sure you had a wire issue in the dash and it was about to get messy. It's always frustrating when you go to the next testing spot and it fixes itself because you're like "oh boy, is it going to be one of those where I can't recreate it or...?" I also like to see how other guy's approach it...l was thinking of doing a bypass test using a test light to B+ down to your piercing probe at the ECU with it disconnected and grounded to rule out wiring, but you were able to get it to act up again, then I'm like yup...no sense in wasting time on that approach since you got her to act up again! Crazy how your video made me think about it and keeps me guessing which way you're going to take it! Then seeing how everything changes when something happens like that. In either case, it's GREAT to see you are doing well at the new shop and have found a way to make some videos man! I really liked this one bro, fun stuff!

A bad wheel speed sensor can cause a P0500 code on a Toyota Tacoma. The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and the wheel speed sensors are part of the vehicle’s speed monitoring system. In many modern vehicles, the ABS system (which uses wheel speed sensors) communicates with the vehicle’s main computer (ECM or PCM) and can influence the vehicle speed readings. If a wheel speed sensor is malfunctioning, it can disrupt the signal that the ECM receives, triggering a P0500 code. The total cost for all four wheel speed sensors is $25 with free shipping on eBay. Replace all four wheel speed sensors and clear the P0500 code. Drive the vehicle as usual, If the P0500 returns then replace the one vehicle speed sensor on the transmission. There's nothing wrong with the cluster in this video. It's a common mechanic shop scam, he knows the truck owner is desperate because of the emission test failure. He overcomplicated an easy job on purpose to get more money out of the customer. .

Great video Cody , people tend to disregard pin tension a lot . Always a plus when you can repair a part like a cluster as I'm sure it runs at least a few hundred plus programming .

Just has a pin fitment issue on a 08 Ford with the 6.4L , was setting a DTC for FRP sensor being erratic (P0194) . At first I used our Launch Torque to graph the FRP sensor PID. Nothing looked unusual except 1 random spike at about 2500 RPM that appeared every so many frame blocks. It would then reduce engine power until next key cycle and at 2500 RPM do it again . I couldn't call a Pump yet because I could command the FRP all the way up and down just off idle and it followed . So I knew something wasn't right and I was missing something .. So I tossed the Launch and grabbed the IDS.. And man what a difference does refresh rate make a big differences. With the IDS graphing the PID at that sweet spot of 2500 RPM you can see nothing but hash from the sensors offset of 1.5V to 5V like it was rapidly toggling the sensor Low Ref off and on a few hundred times a sec . Had on of the other guys pull the valve cover yesterday and they informed me when they looked at the connector it looks like the ground pin was a little spread like someone had a probe in it . I pulled the history and it was suped out to a local Diesel shop Nov of 2018 and they replaced supposedly the high pressure pump but who knows how they diagnoses it . I'm thing they shoved a Tpin or paper clip in there and it had just enough tension to hold up until now ... Weird .. But I learned a lesson and that's scope everything even a sensor that has PIDs.. And I learned the IDS has an insane refresh rate lol

I got the P0500 code on my 2000 100 Series Land Cruiser. My speedometer flickers sometimes up and down, doesn't work sometimes, and then works suddenly. Mostly when it's extremely hot out it gives me problems. Going to start trouble shooting, but based on the symptoms I believe it's the plastic gear wheel in the unit under the car. No ABS light or issues relating to the ABS.

Hi I stumbled across your video doing a Google search for P0500 A. I've been driving with the check engine light for 2 years now like that its not affecting my drive at all. The speedometer works fine. The only issue I have is my fuel gage doesn't work I have to go by 300miles to fill up, and my ac and heat fan works when it wants to, but I don't think that would set off that code. I have a 2005 Tacoma that didn't pass smog check in California and I need to get it fixed to get my tags. My mechanic friend wants to drop the transmission to change the sensor there but if the speedometer works I'm guessing its probably not a good idea. Thanks for a very informative video.

@@codysautodiagnosticsprogra8706 he's just throwing parts at it. I told him let's hold off as I'm going to try to find someone who can diagnose it correctly. From what I gathered if its the sensor in the transmission then the speedometer wouldn't work, and it works fine. Would a faulty gas gage that works sometimes but mostly on E be a bad cluster or its definitely a float?

Great job explaining and diagnosing this . I’m currently going through similar issue with a 3.0! Avalon. ABS Light and check engine . All wheel sensors are good and engine speed sensor is good . Speedometer is out and code is generic speed sensor code . Leading me to thing it’s the cluster as I went over a decent bump the other day and it all started working again. Anyone know if the cluster is swapped out does it have to be programmed to the ECM Or straight swap. Subscribed . This is the first video that I’ve seen that diagnosed this issue with cluster.

I also know the ABS control computer can fail on these. I’m not overly concerned with mileage on cluster reading if I swap out. But will the car start because of anti theft chip or similar if swap cluster ?

Thank you so much for sharing this. This is exactly what's happening to my 2013 Toyota Highlander. I installed an aftermarket radio and probably shorted something along the process because my engine light came on and the error code is P0500. I took my car to the local mechanic and I don't think they performed the same tests you performed in this video. I have all of the symptoms: speedometer and tach are working fine but I don't have cruise control. I am going to try to contact another car shop for a second opinion, and this video will really help me understand what needs to be looked at. Can I purchased a used instrument cluster and have it installed?

hold up... so the signal going to the ECU is the digital signal of the speed sensor (ABS Module) @ Connector E7 pin 8... - all i see as far as the schematic goes; that wire (pin 19) at the instrument cluster is called the Violet/white wire... it doesn't say something like : Vehicle speed signal... although its very blurry and hard to read but i trust you :)

In this video you said since the trucks speedometer is working it’s probably not the transmission speed sensor So would this mean since I have no speedometer that it “is” my transmission speed sensor?
