I did the same 4 speaker upgrade with the factory unit 2 years ago. Make sure you use the sound matting behind the plastic adapters. Over time, the speakers will loosen the bolts and rattle against the metal body. I thought I had 2 blown fronts, but it was simply the plastic bracket rattling from the speaker bass. Put a sheet of sound matting over the speaker opening, cut around the hole with a blade, mount the plastic adapter, and insert the speaker. This also provides a better seal between the speaker and door allowing for cleaner bass and sound. Think of it as a sealed speaker box.

@@Tacomaholic do it! Especially if you live in a warm climate. Over time, those plastic speaker brackets will warp slightly due to heat. I got mine from Crutchfield. The sound deadening material will absorb some of the warping, but still keep a good seal. Been there done that.

Pro tip on removing the door plastic: Invert a can of canned air; this will freeze the 'tar' holding the plastic on and keep things very clean. Work in small sections, and it'll pop free without leaving strings of tar covering everything. It also makes it easy to reinstall that plastic, and... REINSTALL THAT PLASTIC!

As an FYI, there is a small hole in the top of the mounting bracket that can be used to route the speaker wires from speaker to connector. No need to cut a hole in the grommet. Connector will connect on the outside of the door in case you need to disconnect it later.

Plus the connector on the inside of the door instead of between the door card and the metal, might be something for the power window to get caught on. My 09 has the JBL system. So I haven't checked for a speaker upgrade yet.

Great video, I really appreciate the effort you put it. Can I offer a simpler solution to the Dremel...The tabs you want to remove all have a slight slit in them all you need to do is take some duck bill pliers and pry them off. I then used a quick pass of a hand file to smooth them off, snapper would work too to remove any sharpness. Just a little tip to anyone doing this great mod.

This is so not a tacoma ... but it will make sense once you read it lol I replaced all of the speakers on my 95 Celica ... and I added Boom Mats to each speaker. Boom mats are speaker baffles that protect against moisture and dust and also reduce speaker vibration. When I get around to replacing the speakers on my 2015 Tacoma, I'm adding the Boom Mats to my setup. 😊

Just a note to say thank you for all your great videos. The first mod that I did on my 2014 Tacoma Access was installing the UNI filter. My latest mod was sound deadening the doors, upgrading my stereo with the Subaru Kicker tweeters and new 6 x 9 speakers. The Rockfords are a bit expensive in Canada so I went with the Kicker DSC6930 that I found on sale. The only issue is that the holes on the speakers did not align with the ones on Metra bracket, so I had to drill a small pilot hole for the fourth screw. Thanks to your videos the install was super easy and the speakers sound amazing. Thanks again for all the help.

Good professional vid editing. 1) The black glue is butyl rubber. A heat gun and metal scraper will get most of it off. Then go back and scrape it to a thinner coat & it'll be fine. 2) Putting in a new head unit with more power really does necessitate thicker wires. Man, I'm struggling with that right now. I like this initial idea of plug-n-play with sound deadening. A good way to cheaply upgrade. Happy Trails!

Finished this last week along with the full cab sound dampening with the noico and a layer of second skin MLV. On the doors I added in the noico red foam on top of the noico silver. Only things I did differently was I drilled the speaker tabs to the correct spot vs angling the screws and the noico red foam in the doors. Oh and I also put the plastic back in place to cover the holes. The difference in how quiet it is and the stereo sound is fantastic! Thanks for all the hard work. Oh, and yah those tabs in the inside just snap off, no dremel needed.

If you sound deaden the inside part of the door, close up all the holes, it creates a self made speaker enclosure. Also helps keep the door panel from creating rattles when the volume is turned up.

Ditto! You explained the exact purpose of the sheet. What was your reason for not re-installing it? Pick up a roofing sealant tube from the local big box store or Wallyworld if you need to reseal the plastic. If you need to replace the sheet as well, pick up some construction Bisqueen or a roll of painters plastic mask at the same time. Anyway, just my two cents after having to remake numerous door weather seals for restorations back in the day. Great channel and awesome job on all the videos! You, my friend, are going to be a MAJOR influencer on YT. Now go make one for head unit upgrade and amp install! Yes...yes...yes...!!!!!

I found with my 2015 with the white cover plate on the tweeter harness if you just pop the the back in the center with a flat head it just quickly comes off safely and will pop back in with out all of the maneuvering. Also removing the two center pins on the tweeter harness if you just use a small flat head towards the back and lift up the two back catches the pins will slide out much easier with out catching but do hold the harness with pliers and pull cables with your hand. I installed JBL speakers, they make a great aftermarket speaker. JBL 9638s Their 2.3-ohm impedance and their ludicrously high 94dB sensitivity makes them a solid contender for replacement speakers. The clarity of the stock JBL system is crazy now. And there is not a lot of volume loss due to the ohm difference. 4 ohm as most speakers are were out of the question. Too much loss.

I replaced my speakers in my 2023 as well. Not a big fan of “plug & play”, mainly because there is an assumption that one connector just plugs right into the factory plug and everything is fine. Come to find out that the right front speaker the polarity was reversed. I knew better but just double checking everything before buttoning it back up only takes 1 minute with a PT9.

Thanks so much Kevin! If you are having issues with the holes lining up perfectly you can insert the bolts through the speaker holes with the speaker sitting off of the speaker bracket a little bit, that way you can line the bolts up with the holes then just slowly tighten each bolt a little at a time until the speaker is flush.

Those speakers will never reach their full potential unless you hook up an amplifier to them. Your original head unit only sends at the most 15-20 watts RMS to those speakers and that’s most likely an over estimate on my part. So “watts RMS” is how much power a speaker can continuously handle. If you under-power speakers you actually end up missing a lot of sounds that those speakers are capable of. Most of those sounds will actually end up being the bass and mid frequencies because it takes more power to produce lower frequencies. Also I noticed you have separate mounted tweeters. You should get component-speakers instead of what you got which is two-way speakers. Two-way speakers are speakers that have a main woofer, which is the big speaker that produces your mids and some bass sounds, and a smaller speaker mounted in the middle of the main woofer. Typically the smaller woofer on a two-way speakers is a tweeter which produces higher frequencies like voices, cymbals, and high-hats. Now component speakers only contain the main woofer and many speaker companies sell component speakers in kits that also have tweeters that come with them, but are separate from the main woofer allowing you to mount it in a different location. The advantage of component speakers is how your head unit powers them. On the two-way speakers one set of wires is powering two speakers; the main woofer and the tweeter. The two-way speaker has built in resistors to divide the power up to the tweeter so it doesn’t get blown, but that ultimately sacrifices sound capabilities in your main woofer. In component speakers one set of wires is only powering one speaker, allowing the speaker to be fully capable. Another advantage with component speakers is you get a more stereo sound compared to two-way speakers, because of the separation of the main woofer and the tweeters. A very good website to check out is Crutchfield. They’ve been around since the 70’s. Back then they were an electronic store, but they only sold audio equipment. Now they have a very informational website. It allows you to choose what specific vehicle you have and then it shows you what speakers will fit in your vehicle and wether or not you’ll have to do any modifications. They offer free installation guides on there and when you purchase speakers for your vehicle they’ll give you all the necessary wire adapters if you need them. If you guys have questions just let me know! I’m happy to help. I’ve replaced my whole stereo in my truck recently and I’ve also helped friends install new speakers in their vehicles as well. I’m also finishing up school to become an electrician so I know a thing or two about how electricity works
