TOYOTA SIENNA SUNROOF LEAKING WATER? HERE'S WHY!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you ever get a sunroof water leak, often times it will be because of a clogged drain tube. But in some Toyota Sienna's, the leak can be caused by a leaking sunroof carrier assembly. In this video i will explain and show the root cause.

    My Sienna is a wheelchair van also. I did seal this area with silicon and it hasn't leaked since. We haven't had a massive amount of rain, but several days with like half an inch and it has been sitting in the exact same location as before. As the author of this video mentioned, it might not be a permanent fix and the best way is to have them replace the assembly, but I am guessing it's very expensive.

    They wouldn't issue a recall because it's not a safety related issue. But i do believe that with the number of customers experiencing this issue, they should have a customer support program available for owners to cover the cost.

    We are desperate and don't know what to do! Your video just diagnosed our problem and explained what the dealership couldn't seem to... The only thing they could explain was that it would be 4,400. to replace the sunroof on our van that has 100k miles on it! Water running down passenger seat belt, headliner stained and soaked, floor board soaked... stinks! It's the nicest vehicle we own (2017 XLE dual roof SIENNA) and we lost money on our lease vehicle to buy it, because I wanted to go back to Toyota! I am being punished for that decision! Sorry, you have a bad sunroof and you will have to pay... this happens over time! What the heck? My husband is driving a 12 year old Toyota truck with sunroof with zero problems. I don't have to look far to see this has been a dual sunroof problem. Why am I paying for Toyota's oversight? What would you do Jrdagreat?

    My 2017 has this issue. I can pour water directly in the tray and it immediately drains from both sides. However if I park on a slight incline I get a small drip from the plastic dome light / sunroof control housing on the headliner.

    Hi Jrdagreat, I noticed that the holes and brackets where the subassembly is attached to the vehicle allow for some movement/adjustment. Is it difficult to realign the assembly when installing it back in the vehicle - any tricks you use to get it to line up exactly as before? - Do you leave the glass attached when removing and installing or do you take that out beforehand to make it lighter - thanks!

    My 2015 Limited Premium leaks from the passenger seat belt adjuster area, the top of the A pillar has a water stain, and it can leak from around the plastic sunroof bezel with high pressure car washes. Think it could be more than blocked tubes?

    Try blowing out the drain tube is always the first recommended step, and then you open the sunroof and slowly pour a bottle of water in each drain to see if the water drains out. If it drains at a good rate, then you should suspect the sealant area.

  • @TheYotaChannel

    @TheYotaChannel

    The adjustment procedure should be the same as the front. If you look at the glass on each side(left and right), there should be about 4 or 5 torx screws mounting it to the sunroof assembly. Just loosen the screws. there's no need to remove them completely, and that should allow you to adjust the glass. You will need an assistant to help you look on the outside. Once it's leveled to the body the way you like it, simply tighten back up the screws.

    Hi Jrdagreat, When you replace the sunroof assembly do you use the same glass/seals - do you replace anything else related to the leak or just the assembly. Lastly, you mentioned the 10mm bolts that hold the assembly in - is the assembly held in or set in a sealant anywhere or just the bolts?, Thanks for your help!!

  • @TheYotaChannel

    @TheYotaChannel

    3 ай бұрын

    Hello, it's a good idea to inspect the glass and the seal around it while you have everything removed. As far as the sunroof assembly, once you line up the 10mm bolt going around it to the roof, everything should line up, and therefore, you don't need to apply silicone anywhere. Just reconnect your drain tubes, and you should be good to go.

    Thanks for the info! - So does the sunroof leak from the spot you mentioned simply because the sealant between the black plastic and aluminum frame gives out or is water not supposed to reach that seam in the first place? I'm trying to figure out if there is something wrong on the top side of the track that allows this or if the water is simply slipping by that worn out black seant - thanks!!

    My 2019 sienna limited rear sunroof has a leak on the driver side. There is a crack in the sunroof assembly which is causing water to get into the cabin and causing mold in the headliner and under the carpet. Extended warranty and car insurance won't pay to fix it. Im sorry to hear that. You can try going to your local Toyota dealer where you get your car serviced, and ask the manager to see if Toyota can help you with the repair. If that doesn't work, you can call Toyota customer support line yourself directly and explain your situation. After trying to clear the drains, the leak was still there. Today I did my best to seal the section you pointed out (where silver and black meet) with silicon. It hasn't rained yet, so I am waiting to see if it works. Are you saying if I bring it to Toyota, they won't seal the little gap, they will replace the entire assembly? Would it be better to bring it to a body shop and see if they can just do a better job of sealing it? I'm not too keen on removing the entire headliner.

If it's high mileage, and you only use it to get to point A & B, i wouldn't worry about it either. But it sounds like that's the source of your leak right there.
