Scotty, recently got a '12 Honda CR-V FWD. Currently has 78k miles and runs extremely well. During first oil change, I noticed the old oil smelled like gasoline. Also noticed I'm getting slightly less MPG than advertised. No leaks on ground or around engine. I was told it could be blowby and should do a crankcase clean, but I'm not sure this is the issue. Researching sends me in circles. Any idea what's going on?

I have the 2019 version of this car with the CVT in this color. Honestly, the CVT in it isn't half bad compared to many other cars I've driven with a CVT. Toyota engineering a physical first gear into the transmission that eliminates most of the lag you'd have with a traditional CVT. It is also fairly responsive - obviously not the same as an automatic/manual transmission but much better than any other CVT I've driven. I honestly love this car and am looking forward to owning it for many years to come.

Have my 2012 Corolla le I bought new off the lot in 2011. Literally runs perfect still at 120k miles. Only have had to change the oil, filters, rotate tires, brakes. Insane how reliable and nice they are.

In New Zealand, we always had the corolla hatchback. They never stopped selling them here. We even get the corolla wagons.

About those codes that "don't mean anything whatsoever", I drive a 2019 jeep cherokee. Out of the blue, the odometer started blinking. I ignored it for a few months but eventually had the time to get it fixed. Long story short, "the front sensor couldn't reliably communicate with the rear sensor and the rear sensor couldn't communicate with the main computer." They kept my car for 10 days and the grand total was $2600. My only saving grace was that my car is certified 7/100k and i have a wraparound warranty for everything else. I paid $100. Those stupid electronic communication codes can get expensive.

I bought a brand new Toyota Corolla LE hybrid in June of 2023. My break-in mileage (first tank of gas) was 62 miles per gallon. I’ve now (October 2023) got 10K + miles on this car and I’m getting between 55 and 60 mpg. I love Toyotas for quality and reliability. I’m going to keep this car for 10+ years or minimum of 200,000 miles. I am a happy Toyota owner.😅😊

I own a 09 camry hybrid with 406000 km and its a tank and I'm getting 850 km per tank of gas and it has the original hybrid battery...I wouldn't own anything but a toyota hybrid for now on....

I’ve got 2023 2L hybrid hatch. I’ve just done 2 hr round trip. Mainly on A roads ( UK. look it up if you don’t know what an A road is ) Display is showing 69 mpg. I love the car to bits! 😃

Strongly agreed with this. What I want, and have wanted for years, is a hybrid version of the Corolla hatchback. But they just wont give us one in America dangit! Stick the new drivetrain from the latest gen Prius IE; the one that gets almost 200hp and lots of torque with 55+MPG and youd have an incredible car!!! To me that would be the ideal all around commuter car. But Toyota just wont give it to us. I think they want to prop up Prius sales as well as sales for the new Cross hybrid. Thinking from the perspective of a Toyota exec I imagine a corolla hatch hybrid would eat into those other models sales numbers and dilute their product line that already does well in NA. Still frustrating though.

It's a good thing. That electric blue has been *EVERYWHERE* since it came out. It seems like I see more of those blue ones on the road than any other color. Better let it be a flash in the pan, unique, desirable trait on corollas of a certain vintage than for it to become a meme. How sad it would be if that electric blue became as commonplace on Toyotas as that universal maroon/burgundy color that has been all over Toyotas since the early-2000s.

My 2016 Honda Civic Touring has a CVT and I would bet most people that got in and drove it would never guess it was a CVT. Honda CVTs are not only hard to tell they’re CVTs, but they also seem to be extremely durable too. I have 132,000 miles on mine with zero issues. I do a partial fluid change every 30k miles..

Toyota makes the best CVT transmission on the market and as long as you don’t try to tow anything with the car that has a CVT transmission you will be fine

I got a 2022 about 2 months ago with a CVT, the best mpg I've got so far is 50.58 mpg. I never got over 62 mph, had the ac on half the trip & off the other half. I wanted the 6 speed & a new one but it was hard to find one of any kind. If you goose it it takes off like a rocket compared to other CVT'S. Not a race car but plenty of power for the mpg.

SCOTTY THE MAN, that said got my daughters a 2015 camry we are at 130k miles flawless cvt transmission. And this car was a 17 and 20 yr olds car. Shift it your self that 175hp is no joke

Had a couple of Corolla's over the years last forever never had to do anything to them as long as you change oil and filters regularly really good reliable cars but all mine were manual transmission which I prefer

Love my 2004 Toyota matrix. Using Scotty's videos to keep it going still. A little under 225,000 miles. I loved how much space is in the matrix. This new Corolla/matrix would be a decent upgrade, but you lose space for sure.

I like the 2-tone roof and body design. To play devil’s advocate, I actually like CVTs as an automatic transmission. I’m a manual guy myself, but I rented a Nissan Altima in San Diego (granted, Nissan’s CVT reputation is questionable), but the drive was very smooth and responsive. I wouldn’t have any worries purchasing a Toyota-made CVT.

I have a 2022 Corolla hybrid with 50k miles on it. I love the feeling of the eCVT. I test drove a corolla with a conventional CVT and did not like the sluggishness. Plus, the eCVT is simple and indestructible. Watched a video of a guy pulling 16k pounds with a prius. The engine would give out before the eCVT would. Driving in the city with a manual is no fun. My first few cars were manual, and they were fun until I was in a traffic jam.

My wife's 2011 Toyota Matrix has been a great car, my wife bought it in 2014. One of the best car's we ever owned and I intend on driving it for many years to come.

I would love to get a used Toyota hatchback with a manual transmission. A stick shift makes it less theft-prone because few people can drive a stick anymore. The only thing I worry about is clutch wear from the previous owner. Clutch replacements are expensive. I wish there were a way to check it on a PPI.

Not all CVTs are created equal. When I last bought a car I test drove a Dodge Caliber. It had a CVT and was horrible to drive. Felt really sluggish. I ended up with a Mitsubishi Lancer (also with CVT) and it is really peppy and fun to drive.

Those hatchbacks are beautiful. I was close to buying one.

The Corolla hatch I believe was originally a Scion IM. When they discontinued Scion they called it a Toyota. Then they matched it to mimic the front of a Corolla Sedan with the hatchback. At least that is the evolution in Canada, no Matrix involved. Maybe they are all on the same platform but Corolla Hatch used to be a Scion.

CVTs are cheaper to make, but will cost you more to buy. Perfect combination!

Love the look of that Corolla. The blue is great too.

My 2009 Nissan Altima had a CVT. Subframe broke at 393,000 miles, but never had transmission trouble. Range of over 550 miles on interstate.

I don't know if they still make them, but I think the Corollas with the physical launch gear made sense. Yes I know they drive (feel) differently than a typical automatic or even manual trans car, but I think they do get even better gas milage (manual transmissions, from an economy standpoint, really don't hold up to the expectation they used to -- where they got better gas mileage than their automatic equivalents, since CVTs and modern automatics have gotten so good with shifting and the computers, in many cases, they get better gas mileage than cars that had manual transmission. But yes, you do loose the "fun" factor with the CVTs and automatics. Personally, since I have to periodically drive in traffic (think traffic jams) I much prefer the automatics anyway myself. And really, I'm still quite amazed that my 2020 Camry with the automatic trans can get 40+ MPG on the highway, and it's not even a hybrid (it does have the smaller 4 cylinder engine but they did give it enough torque at least and probably has more power than a typical V6 engine from 10-15 years ago, but it's still very economical. Even their V6 is quite good I think with about 30-32 mpg average). Scotty May also want to check the new Camry's. It does seem that the new (2024) Camry may have a CVT only, so if you wanted a geared automatic, you may need to look for a 2022-2023 or older. Hence one of the reasons I am keeping my 2020 Camry until I absolutely have to get rid of it (which hopefully is a long time from now...) I just hope the 2.5L "D4S" design is as reliable as the previous generation Camry's which I still see a lot of them on the road (many from the mid-2000's even so about 15-20 years old).

I just purchased a 2024 Corolla LE, gas engine. I got 46 mpg at 65 mph! CVT!

Scotty, I'm on my second battery still in my 2008 Scion. The original battery lasted 8 years. The new toyota battery is 7 years and going strong.

This is doing nothing for me except to make me miss my old 2003 Matrix with manual 5 speed...it's still running great with approx 330,000 miles..I say approximately cuz the odometer stopped at 299.999 miles years ago...and still getting 36 mph...though the rust is becoming a real problem here in Illinois...but I'll never get a better little run around...and this thing's taken me to Alaska about ten times... Somewhere in my dreams I find another Matrix that nobody wants cuz it isn't sexy enough...and again who the heck can even use a manual transmission? Just me...and a few of us old geezers. Love your Toyota...and it will love you back

Love our 2016 Corolla, even with the CVT, get 40+ on the interstate. Had a chance to drive the 2023 two different times this year and don’t like it at all. Too much new tech stuff, changed the great cruise control that had been the same forever. Our ‘99 Rolla with manual trans still going strong.

I will say, after driving a 2010 prius with the CVT. I will admit, its not the same as a normal car with gears but honestly the ramp up is so smooth. I would have thought it would be part of a luxury car because you don't feel the gear shifts. In the modern 9 speed auto tranny's we have you can feel every gear change. 220k miles and still going!

Damn I wish I could find one with a standard transmission. I prefer a standard over an automatic or CVT. When the time comes to get another car I would definitely like to get one of those. A Toyota Corolla with a standard transmission is the car I really want to get when I buy one. I also might try to go a few years older though as I would like to have a real handbrake and don't want all those fancy electronics.

I only average 30-32 mpgs with my corolla 21 hatch 6spd. I was getting 34 before putting on ultra high-performance all seasons. At least it's way safer in the wet now.

Actually there is a similar car called a corolla touring its longer like the matrix but not available in North America. I would buy one if I could .

I owned a 2005 Matrix with the 5-speed manual. I only traded it in on a new Subaru Forester in late 2014 because I wanted a manual transmission in a smaller AWD SUV. Nowadays, Subaru has done away with the manual transmission in the Forester, so I'd get a RAV-4 if I only wanted 2 rows. But since I need 3 rows and the third row being for adults, I'm thinking I'll get the new Grand Highlander in a few years.

Just test drove 2024 Corolla and Corolla hybrid. First, underneath the hood, lots of parts are made of plastics. Second, the regular Corolla is really noisy without much sound insulation. Third, even the salesperson admits this: the suspension is poor, and he told me to slow down to 5 mph over the dealership's speed bumps. The hybrid is much quieter at low speed but once on the highway, noise becomes very loud.

I personally love cvt it feels/ sounds like a jet I like the smooth no step feel .

I prefer the older Corollas , Its a shane there is no 3 door hatchbacks anymore , I have 2004 ,1.6 vvti 3 door ,T3 , grey hatchback (just as much space barely have to bend down to get in the back for a 6ft personb) 82,000 miles , had it 8 months , the styling in my opibion is better sleeker , more stylish ( especialky the 3 door variant). I am a fan of these bulky bloated hatchbacks that do not really have that much interior space or less than the E120 models. If the newer ones have a more sleek 3 door model that would be sweet

CVTs aren't so bad. Don't push it till you get to 5mph, than give 2/3 throttle and it'll pull at 4000rmp all the way to 85 without skipping a beat (or shifting). I drive a Nissan Versa Note 200 miles per day, with its far inferior CVT, and I won't go back to a manual. CVT for daily driving, dual clutch for a toy. Unless I buy a GR Corolla. That's a manual I'd be happy to drive every day.

Get one with an eCVT aka the hybrid. You can slam the gas pedal down at a dead stop and the electric motors give you a nice launch along with the engine. Conventional CVTs suck. The eCVT is my favorite.

I had a 03 matrix with the 5 speed that was my commuter for 7 years. The timing chain tensioner failed and jumped timing at 270k and that was it. Loved that car but it was time for something newer. Its been a few months since and i just picked up a 21 corolla xse hatch with the 6 speed with 15,000 miles. Its a nice upgrade minus the loss of room but i wish i could get that kind of mileage, im lucky to see 35 with cruise set to 70 on my 110 mile daily trip. 90% freeway miles. Im getting about 360 miles to the tank and it is kind of upsetting.

Call Ron Scotty you've probably got about 30 or 40 videos, talking about CVT transmissions, and how they will always get better gas mileage than the standard.

i love the e vvt hybrid transmission. lots of cool sound from the 3 cylinder 1,5l and ingenious coupling of the electric motors, through the planetary gear❤ - best of both worlds... at my work, we have the old hybrid yaris. it is nothing like the new one - at all. the new (2021-), is 1000 times better in all manners. but we have the old model all over the place, because theres no difference between one that has driven 150.000km and a low mileage one - they last forever. by the way, in my work the cars are driven hard, used 24 hours, driving around 2km, between customers - continously.

I wish they made the full length Matrix still, or even the older Corolla wagons and All-Traks AWD models. The hatchback is similar to the slightly shorter Matrix S.

After the Matrix was discontinued, the came out with the Scion/Corolla iM which is a hatchback

@@dixiesmaster The problem with this hatchback is has less legroom in the rear seat and trunk space compared to the sedan. It's too small and they should have move the rear well back as Honda did with the Civic so that their is more space

@@marklintwo correct. August they started 2024 model year. Last year 2023 model year the Corolla Hatchback was available with manual transmission. Car & Driver I believe wrote an article on the 23 vehicles available with manual transmissions

Corollas are beautiful nowadays. Corolla hybrid can run 600miles for 17$

Actually the new GR Corolla only comes with a six speed manual transmission, but that’s a different kind of car in competition with the likes of a VW GTI. I happen to love “driving” and at least one of our family cars will always be a manual transmission. It also means that my daughter won’t borrow my car cuz she’s not yet bothered to learn how to handle a stick shift.

I like the hatchback design, just wish that the hybrid version will come to the US (that or the Aygo) (I like hybrid). Can't afford the 23/24 prius (though i wish i could). But at least i got a good deal on a used 21 corolla hybrid with amazing avg milage though compare to my old car so no complaint there.

I don’t think it’s a matrix updated. It’s a new platform Toyota developed. If I understand it correctly they developed the M engine family and drivetrain, suspension etc which is scaled up down for different models. Hatchback and regular Corolla are the same platform, and camry, rav4 have the same engine family etc.

I used to have a 2016 Toyota Corolla LE with the CVT transmission, it had 35k miles and it drove light a brand new car until I traded it in at 105k miles as I wanted to get a Corolla with the Adaptive cruise. Currently have a 2017 Toyota Corolla SE with the CVT transmission and got it at 55k miles and I now have 110k with no issues. I had the transmission fluid changed on both of these cars at intervals of 60k miles and have had no issues with any part of the car but one of the most important is no issues with the CVT. I’m gonna get this little K313 CVT to 200k miles ✊🏻 corollas are such little beast, I’m partial to the 2014-2019, the back seat is hugh, can get over 40MPH on the freeway and it had all the advanced safety technology. I’m defiantly happy!!

I still believe the Mazda 3 Hatch is a better choice because you get a 1-3 mpg lower than a CVT corolla, the luxury is absolutely SUPERB and they ONLY make them in 6 speed autos/manuals. no CVTS and from 2020-2023 they stay around 20k-26k and have a NA 2.5L I4 OR a turbo 2.5L , PLUS they come from JAPAN. *The NA comes with 191 bhp (as of 2023), and the Turbo has 257hp (on 91).* I have absolutely LOVED my Mazda 3 hatch and have around 3,500 miles in it right now

Agreed. The Mazda 3 seems much more grown up than the Corolla

I agree that it's nice Mazda at least offers a manual, but it is now only available in the very top trims; you will pay big money for ANY Mazda w/ a manual. It is one of very few choices left, however....

@theadvocate4698 I'm 6'4" and I fit in it perfectly! Although I am muscular slim, but height wise I fit in it VERY nicely. The corollas I tested I was super cramped lol

I think the more expensive vehicles have regular automatic transmissions in them because they are alot heavier and a CVT wouldn't last with the extra weight.

I wanted ask a question I have Toyota Tundra 2000 I have a viper alarm system electric start. When the truck is park my battery gauge on the dash inside of the truck. The red arm indicator starts going up and down making clicking sound. Any idea why it's doing that?

The customer should get what they want in Transmissions I would not mind one with a CVT

We had a 1984 Toyota Tercel 5 speed manual, and at 485,000 KM my dad was rear ended by a pickup and wrote the car off. If not for the accident that car would have lasted to at least a million. We've had multiple Toyotas all into the hundreds of thousands of KM's without issues. So what do I drive today? A piece of garbage 2018 Kia Forte I bought new, and at 32,000km the backup camera died. Just one more thing in a long list of troubles with that car. I should have bought a Toyota, and I'm kicking myself every time I get in and drive.

Yes hatchbacks are good. I'd have one now if they'd still been making them cheap. Isn't a manual cheaper than CVT?

Scotty Kilmer--long time watcher, first time poster--I am a fan of your work/knowledge. I have a question. I own a 1999 Dodge 2500 with the V10magnum engine. Yes, the one thats a gasoline 10cyl-purs like a dodge viper. That said--i need to get rid of this thing. Its about 4 cyl too much for me. Do you have any advice on how to get out of this rig and into a 4runner or fjcruiser? Can't seem to get any dealerships that want to call me back. Maybe i'm not being persistant enough? Anyway--would appreciate any advice. I'm in Virginia and I would think there are plenty of truck lovers in these mountains.

CVT transmission still requires conservative driving to get better gas mileage.

It's a damn shame the Manuel transmission is going away. Just stupid people can't really drive. That's it. Beautiful car too

CVT transmission is dead in my 2018, my rental 2023 Corolla hatch feels like the transmission is already acting up at only 300mi

I have never had a problem with a CVT nor do I notice any difference between that and what he calls a "normal" automatic transmission.
