Toyota rear axle bearing replacement for 4th/5th gen 4runner, FJ Cruiser, GX470, 2nd/3rd gen Tacoma

In this video, I replace the wheel bearings on a set of 4th gen 4runner axles. Mistakenly said these were 2nd gen Tacoma axles while my brain was recording and on autopilot.
The bearings I used are also compatible with multiple similar vehicles.
Based on that, the bearing adapter tool used in the video should work on:
LEXUS
GX460 2009-2019
GX470 2002-2009
TOYOTA
4 Runner 4th gen all years
4runner 5th gen 2009-2020 (possibly '21/'22)
FJ Cruiser all years
Hilux Surf 4th gen all years
Land Cruiser Prado 120 all years
Land Cruiser Prado 150 all years
You will need a different bearing adapter tool to do 2nd and 3rd gen Tacomas but the procedure is identical.
NOTES:
Around the 10:50 mark I mention a seal that will be reused. That is a mistake. It will not be reused and I later mention that in the video but it is confusing and worth mentioning.

I just finished building a shop press just to do this job on my wife’s 12 Tacoma. I don’t think it will be to tuff. I always take pictures before I remove things so I have a reference right there in hand. I have less then a hundred in the press and right at a hundred in the tools. The dealer wanted 650.00 per side. I’m retired so I have more time then money. So I’m doing it myself.

Duane we are an import shop and have used your tool regularly for a couple of years. Works perfectly. Recently I've seen some new pieces which we were not offered when we bought our orignal set - It looks like you've made a plate to use on the top of the axle when pushing it into the new bearing and an adapter to remove the old retainer instead of cutting it? Also somehow our guys managed to misplace the adapter for pushing the bearing back in so I need to buy another one of those also. How do I go about ordering these thanks

2 years later and your video is still helping folks. I'm about to do my wifes 06 4 Runner as soo as Donald sends me the tools. She only has 365K miles on it. Other than the rear bearings starting to make noise it still looks, runs and drives like it did when new. Course I rebuilt the front end last year..... I work on my own stuff and am preetty particular about keeping them in good shape. My Pickup is a 2000 TD Ram and my 4x4 is a SAS'ed 93 Rodeo with Marlin Crawlers and a bunch of other custom stuff. Great video man. Btw I'm getting an error that my rear drive ABS sensor is not working. So I swapped my sensors around to make sure it's not the actual sensor and it's not. Then when I took the rear driver sensor off and looked thru that little hole while spinning the wheel I didn't see anything spinning in there, it almost looks like retainer is not rotating with the axle, is this possible?

Not to take anything from Donald, but if with that first tool to remove the race if you had ground away the sharp corners, it probably would not scratch the axle surface. Else, thanks for the video. My usual mechanic has me going to a specialty 4-wheel shop to have the bearings removed (I live in apartments now and don’t have the space, nor access to tools I had in the past). Hopefully, if I get him to watch this video, he can do the job himself. I’ll even buy him the “Donald” tool.

Hi, if the axle seal is leaking can you replace it without replacing the bearing or does a leaking seal indicate a bad bearing?

  • @theheavymetalslug8340

    @theheavymetalslug8340

    Жыл бұрын

I recommend swapping the bearing. In the event that the bearing is good and the seal has failed, the gear oil will typically have already worked its way inside the bearing which changes the composition of the grease and compromises the integrity of the bearing. You will likely need to redo it all again in the near future. Best to do both all at once and enjoy many trouble free years/miles.

That's an interesting take. There is nothing destructive about this process in regard to the wheel studs if you take the proper precautions. Do you replace your wheel studs every time you rotate your tires? Because that is the level of involvement that the wheel studs have in this scenario. They're simply not engaged in any of the press process. For the record, I did suggest new studs but the person who owned these axles, didn't want to pay the extra amount to swap them. I'm not going to be willfully negligent and destroy his property. I can easily take an extra step and give it back to him with no extra headaches.
