Toyota Rav4 Vanguard Roof Rack Review. Horrible Noise and Vibration!!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

First off, I still love this Vanguard roof rack. I am definitely keeping it. But it is flawed. The front air deflector aka wind fairing is poorly designed. It is not large enough and includes a cut out for a light bar whether you want a light bar or not. I dont. So all that wind hits the front cross rail and makes it vibrate LIKE CRAZY! It's horrible. Intolerable noise and vibration.
I designed and built a replacement fairing that I will be showing in the next video. I have reached out to Vanguard 8+ times and they have yet to respond. The new fairing that I just built completely solved the problem and in my next video I will show you. Now, it is whisper silent!!
Dont buy this Vanguard roof rack unless you plan on trying a light bar or building a new fairing like I do in my next video.

You nail down the problem indeed that it is an aerodynamic issues which is causing the wind noise and vibration. Square edges and lots of open space create a lot of turbulence and drags. I think to help minimize the wind noise, when you build the front panel to deflect the wind, make it to be flush with the vehicle body and use a door trim/protector to act as a rubber gasket, so as to not damage the paint. This will also keep the wind from going through and compressing between the deflector and the roof of the vehicle. I have pair of aftermarket sport sidemirror with turn signal for my 2001 corolla over the years, so because the mirror has an opening to let are through, it created a lot more noise then the OEM mirror. This year I was considering removing them because the wind noise get so annoying especially at highway speed. I eventually solve the problem by cutting out from cardboard the shape of the opening and make two copy of it from a red detergent battle to try Mach the red color of the mirror and glued them in place. My noise issues was fix by blocking air from going through the opening of the mirror and defusing on the side window when the wind was going trough the openings. The link show the mirror That I used on my car, but produce a lot of wind noise because of those openings. www.summitracing.com/parts/ipc-cml-96cv2?seid=srese1&gclid=CjwKCAiAiML-BRAAEiwAuWVgggg6mL-NgqHxS0y9b9mKMjhQQ3e1p0PO8KdFkPlX8OUs4PJok_wvkhoC6BYQAvD_BwE

As for the foam that making the notice I think it should be glued down. I had an experience like that with my door panel, when I put my hand on it the vibration stop, when I check the panel, it was lose and the foam was no more glued to the door panel which was confronting also to the vibration noise.

Hey James....try getting a length of nylon cord (similar to the cord used for a pull start mower/chainsaw) and spirally wrap it around one or more of the bars on the roof rack, this will disrupt the airflow at higher speeds, reduce the noise and vibration !!! I have tried this and it works well. If it works for you, you could paint or dye the cord to match the colour of the roof rack paint ! Cheers from Andy from Australia :)

So I had the same issue with the front holes not lining up. Though mine did come with an instruction sheet if you want a pic of it to link to your channel. I mounted mine at its max height to keep the fairing on with the bottom square rail a 1/4" off the paint. And mounted a peice of steel across the top rails to stop the vibration for now

i think all roof racks make a lot of noise if you open the sunroof, because they change the way the air is interacting with the open sunroof.

It appears you have removed the back seats? I just ordered a 2021 RAV4 and I'm very interested in removing the back seats and creating a flat floor space for cargo and pet rescue transport. Do you have vid of that mod? Was it DIY? No way I could do that myself. Any suggestions for where to get something like that done? What do I even Google to find a place to do that? Thanks for any advice :)

Toyota protects both ends of the battery, top and bottom. They leave around 10% that is unavailable on the top and 20% on the bottom. Charge to full, its fine.

Jim, Just saying why drive around with something that is noisy and not fuel effective . If you need it occasionally why not develop a quick attach and release system. Have the beet of both worlds. The Prime is so well engineered, why mess it up.
