Michael thank you sooooooo much. I had people telling me I needed a new transmission but they were wrong......with the help of this video I replaced coil pack with spark plug all 4, and added transmission fluid with a pump from underneath the car. THIS MAN KNOWS WHAT HES TALKING ABOUT!!! THIS MAN IS A1 IN THE TOP OF MY BOOKS WHEN IT COMES TO MY 2012 PRIUS V FIVE.....BEFORE U DO ANYTHING LOOK AT ALL THIS MANS VIDEO CAUSE HE KNOWS WHAT HE TALKING ABOUT. I WAS ONLY OUT OF SERVICE FOR 2 DAYS AND MY CAR IS GOOD AS NEW!!! THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!!

@@domtam6571 oh ok. mine has been shaking on and off at cold startup for around a month or so but I just got a p0301 p0302 p0303 AND P0304 codes ALL AT ONCE today with an engine light. Drives fine otherwise. just on startup. (backround info. my water pump just went bad about a month ago and this happen roughly around the same time. 147k. don't know if it's related! not losing coolant though. levels are good) A couple videos were saying that means it's 100% a bad head gasket. I don't know if that's true. Or should I try the ERG, and also replacing the plugs / coils / injectors (they need to be replaced anyway). I do find it funny that ALL the cylinders are showing a misfire all at once...

hello there, i also have 2010 Prius. did my research on it before i bought it to confirm all oil changes and regular services done during its life. i bought at 109000 miles and at 141000 miles one afternoon it shook and rattled like crazy, i took right to local Toyota dealer and mechanic said probably head gasket after his inspection his answer $4200 i didn't believe him. that day i purchased a bottle of LUCAS heavy duty engine & Injector cleaner, put it in my car along with 3/4 tank of premium fuel and about 100-150 miles later NO more Knocking motor and My check engine light went out and stayed OFF i also filled tank 2nd time with premium fuel as well . i had already changed my spark plugs about 8000 miles previously. i was later told issue was probably Dirty injector in #1 cylinder. Its the headgasket! Trust me. Whats happening in cylinder 1 is coolant is leaking in and preventing any combustion from happening. This will make the piston rod bend and punch a hole through the engine. I did 2 prius headgaskets and both were cylinder 1 leaking coolant. I love toyota but they crap the bed on this one.

Also when you dont clean the egr and egr cooler along with the intake manifolds tiny port holes, this will make the headgasket go bad much sooner.

I also went to my Toyota dealer and told me it would cost $4000, as a 19 year old student in college this was hard to hear especially since I had saved up so much money to purchase my Prius from an older man who had no use for it anymore since he had purchased a Tesla for himself.

Time stamp 4.17 (possible problems of knocking) 1)change plugs 2) clean fuel injectors 3) EGR problems this is the hardest thing to do on your own so you want to exhaust all the easy options first.

My Prius is doing this currently the shaking stops after like a minute is it the same for you?

Thanks for the info. My 2013 has been doing this infrequently for the past couple years but only after the car has not been driven for several days, a cold start. Recently I changed the plugs using Denso OEM type. A week later on the first cool morning the rattle presented but only for 2-3 seconds. With the weather getting cooler I'm using a fuel injector additive, Tecktron, to see if that helps. I've used this additive and Lucas fuel system cleaner on other vehicles with good success. But this is the first hybrid I've ever owned and it's a different animal even though the engine is the same as other ICE. The order of remedies you suggest makes a lot of sense. So if the fuel injector cleansing doesn't help, I'll deal with the EGR. Thanks again for sharing your experience.

Had the same issue with my 2012 Prius. Here’s what I did to fix. Replaced coils, spark plugs, and cleaned the fuel injectors. Parts cost $400 and labor was $250. Total to fix: $650. Car is running fine now, no more knocking sound. I have 195k on the odometer and was told to use premium gas given the vehicle mileage. Hope this helps

There is no "premium gas." There's different octane gas. Premium is a marketing gimmick. Use what Toyota says to use.

Hi, with regards to the plugs, NGK plugs are really expensive and I have recently changed the plugs of my 2012 Prius with Bosch equivalent ones. They are the same interms of specification and in my country (New Zealand) 4 of these Bosch plugs are about the price of 1 NGK plug. Bosch VR8SII33X

I just did headgasket on my 2012 ct200h. But it's misfiring and ratlling hard.not sure what happen.prior opening head there was only loss of coolant.no noise .help would be appreciated. Cleaned egr.and intake as well

I got my fuel injectors cleaned and my knocking stopped. I suspect that since the hybrid uses less of the engine, the fuel injectors get less use over time and so are more likely to get clogged.

The sad reality is you probably haven't not fixed anything. I've had 3 of these cars and they all do the same thing. I am a fan of the technology but after spending tons of time and money on this model I had to admit this car is disappointing at best. All 3rd generation Prius will do that loud knocking on "cold/weather starts in the morning". They are tons of people that have noticed and complained about this problem. Toyota has added filters to the misfire/knocking detection to mask this problem and minimize the check engine notifications. They can hide the check engine light but they cannot hide the embarrassing looks you get when friends, neighbors and others hear the box of rocks knocking sound that is the prize Toyota design. They came out with a new intake manifold design in Technical Service Bulletin T-SB-0010-12 back in January of 2012. This was supposed to fix this problem... it DID NOT. They then ran away with their tails between their legs and are back to the dirty dancing story of "That's normal operation" (if you're still in warranty). The problem can and will get worse and eventually lead to the destruction of the engine (blown head gasket, throw a rod, etc.). Outside of this design problem that Toyota is unable to fix (or unwilling to admit and cover the cost), there are other legit reasons for misfires. Spark plugs, Ignition Coils, Fuel Injectors, EGR Valve, EGR Cooler, Intake Manifold blockage, various sensors, etc. The point is... All 3rd generation Prius will do that loud knocking on "cold/weather starts in the morning" (especially during the early warm up stages when the engine has to kick in the added load of charging the HV battery). If that's your problem don't waste your time and money... that's Toyota's normal operation. They seem proud of this behavior and mechanics get a lot of extra work from this debacle.

I got in an accident (driving my 2017 fielder hybrid) and one of my front bumper parking sensor shattered, I purchased a replacement from ebay and installed it, but its still erratic. Anyone has knowledge about this? Thanks!

Thanks for that! did you run a scan tool on the engine and if you did were there no codes or real time data that would show this problem up? Just curious as to why there would not be any indicators of fuel mixture or O2 sensors that may have narrowed it down, as $125 for one sparkplug is outrageous!

@@metrork1 Iridum Plugs..... Price depends on where you are in the world! FYI: Gold Tip Plugs would be over $1000 each.

So my hybrid Lexus RX V6, you have the intake manifold from the top of the engine in the middle of the cylinders but the V6 is tilted and looks like a L3 and with the intake on the top going back curves over the injectors and spark plugs on the other 3 cylinders. Placed up against the firewall and you remove the throttle plate and leave the coolant hose just pushed out of the way then after removing a 14 and two 12mm screws and egr hose and then you can take out the other half of the plugs. It's 20 minutes in the four cylinder hybrid it's a few hour on the 3MZFe V6.

If the knock is coming back it is The HEADGASKET. REPLACED MY HEADGASKET AT 275K MILES. KNOCKING DISAPPEARED AND OIL CONSUMPTION WENT WAY DOWN.

dont forget head gasket. check coolant levels to see if it is leaking into the cylinder.

I completely removed the egr system & cleaned out all the carbon........fixed the issue 100%

All. I have a 2011, that would no longer run. EGR cooler was so clogged the engine was starving for oxygen and burning oil. So I cleaned the whole circuit. 401 code gone, still shaking and knocking. Misfire on three. Changed spark plugs - runs like a top. 43mpg for 88 miles. Hasn’t run this good in years.

I have a 2010 Prius with the same knocking (only 2 times so far) but no coolant loss so I believe it is NOT that problem. My mechanic is going to look at it and try to understand what is happening.

The US Army relied on trucks to keep its advancing Army supplied as it pushed its way across Europe during WW2. Any trucks that had a problem were simply pushed aside so the convoys could keep coming. 70 years ago, I knew two brothers who had been mechanics for the "Red Ball Express". Rislone and Marvel Mystery Oil were two products developed to help that are still used today. I tried the Rislone when I bought as a 2010 with 190K miles on it to replace one with 250K which had been pretty reliable. [I made a mistake!] The newer one had an EGR-relatated rattle. Rislone (a 2-part) cleaned it up and stopped the rattle. Stick with good quality gas. The additives make them different. Sunoco seems to be best. Compare the mileage you get from both. I believe the previous owner used cheap gas. The Prius is an incredible vehicle!! My "new" Prius had other problems. One caused by the dealer's Mechanic who changed the engine coolant without purging the air pockets. That had caused overheating on a long drive away from home. Purging the air pockets cured that. Be sure to use the proper coolant; don't make it worse!! I'm about to change inverter coolant for the same reason. Another chemical gem from WW2 is Marvel Mystery Oil. Still around after 85 years. Haven't tried it yet but expect it to try it as well. Additives have three purposes: Prevent corrosion, provide cooling, and reduce internal friction.

Hey I have a 2015 Toyota Prius with 116,000 miles. My Prius made this noise a couple of times once in 2019 and once in 2020 and now once in 2021. When I scan the Car‘s computer it says random misfire cylinder one and cylinder two misfire‘s. But when I clear the codes they don’t come back up again neither does my check engine light from the beginning. I recently changed my ignition coils and spark plugs at 100,000 miles. But still I am having this problem not all the time sometimes. Do you know what I can do to solve this issue? One of my friend told me that it’s my head gasket going bad I should replace it what do you think please let me know thank you.

I had water leaking in my prius #1 and #2 spark plug holes causing a misfire, reason was windshield wipers cowl drain weep holes were clogged with debris allowing water to start leaking in to the engine compartment

do pressure test, you can see if coolant leaking to any of the cylinder.

I have 2 year old gas and car doing that after running it for 2 days to try run out of the gas i noticed ENGINE GOT SUPER HOT is yours super hot

I cleaned my MAF sensor and cleaned the throttle body. 66k miles on 2015 Prius. Seems to be solved. Time will tell. Never had any codes

One thing you cna do that will help tons is install an oil catch can inline on the vacuum hose that goes from your pcv valve to your intake. Pcv valve will probably be clogged if oil is in ypur throttle body. (super common on all prius,) the catch can prevents oil from going into your intake, which eventually will foul up sensors, and clog injectors, and spread rumors about you to your crush. GeTTR DuN

Hi Michael and everyone, I have the same issue on my 2014 Prius, I already replace the plugs and ignition coils, but still did not solve the problem. The rattling and knocking at start also come with a smell like un-burn gas mixture, I always have my oil changed at dealer they check for coolant and oil, so no lost of coolant and no mirky oil i hope it's not head gasket problem. Could give me the next tip to find and fix this issue? Thanks!

It could also be the transmission I think.. I had that problem and changed the plugs then I changed the O2 sensor downstream.. still knocking.. I was getting ready to change the upstream O2 sensor and my buddy told me check it out for first.. anyway after an hour or so we figured that it was in the transmission because when I put it in neutral it's not knocking anymore.. when I put it in drive it is knocking.. But amigo.. what country is it where a spark plug cost $125.. that is out of this world..

Thank you my 2014 knocks on startup and shakes every once in a while. I switched the coils and plugs but still heard a loud noise during startup. My main code is cylinder 1 misfire but there are secondary codes of all the cylinders misfiring. The check engine light comes on and back off after a couple days. Hope I resolve this it has 225,000 miles on it

Same exact problem here. About a week ago it started rattling violently like this, but only upon start up, and only after sitting long enough for the engine to be cold. Took it to 2 different mechanics, all four ignition coils changed, and all new spark plugs. $1300 later, Still having the problem! Hoping Some of the suggestions in this video in the comments and they help figure out what’s going on. Seems I have to check the EGR next.

@@Necrohermit cleaned EGR worked for a bit but turned out to be blown/warped head gasket allowing fluid into cylinder 1 then starving the cooling system eventually to where red light on dash signaling high temps eventually goes away after cooling down but eventually led to knocking and dancing enternals so currently now shopping for new motor lol

Pls I seriously need your help. My location is Nigeria. There are no mechanics here who can really work on hybrid cars. For the past 2 months, I have been having rattling and knocking sound. With no error codes. I cleaned the whole egr systems, cleaned injectors, changed spark plugs, cleaned throttle body, cleaned PC valve, Cleaned inlet manifold, I have oil catch can installed for about 5 months now. Upon all these, the car is still rattling and making knocking sound. Especially when it's charging the HV battery. If I drive fast the sound disappears. My coolant doesn't shot, my engine oil doesn't have water in it but I noticed the oil does shot. So I can't say it's blown head gasket. And today this new incident happened. Now if I remove the 12v battery head for 5 minutes and put it back the car starts on ev only after 3 to 5 seconds then car trys to start the engine and the ready light goes off and check hybrid system light and other error lights comes on on dash board. Is this a sign that my engine knocked? Will Changing the crankshaft position sensor solve the issue? What exactly should I do? The car has 145,000 miles on it. The error codes it shows using toyota techstream now are P0335, P0A0F, C1259, C1310

How did you import Prius? You can download Prius 3rd gen service manual and do it yourself or give it to mechanics who can read and follow it.

do pressure test, check if coolant leaks to any of the cylinder. That's is the only way to check it

I have a Prius T-Spirit 2013. Experienced that a couple of times and it was only when I started the engine after not using the car for a while (3-4 weeks). It’s almost in 200K miles and so far I had to get the water pump changed and number plate bulbs. Other than that it’s all good

Holy crap, $125 for a spark plug?! Only $10 here in the USA. Sometimes cheaper. Do you mean the "coil pack"? Because those are almost $100.

He means COIL packs and they are expansive everywhere !

What you are hearing is the clutch chattering, based on vibration from rough idle or misfire. Yes, they do have clutches. As they engage, if the engine isn't running smooth the clutch engagement will echo the vibration.

Hi. I had same issue. But the noise immediately disappears when i engage gear in D mode. In P mode, noise comes back. So what i do is immediately after ignition, i press brake down and shift to D mode with brake still pressed even before the engine kicks. I changed EGR, cleaned manifold, spark plugs. No use. My mech tells me its the clutch dampner making that noise.. any thoughts please?

I need to setup a spark plug store in your country.

I have same problem but mine doesn’t do it continuously. It dose it for less than a minute then stop knocking. And it dose it in the morning or when the car cold lets say. I’ll try that see if it works for me. Thanks

Most likely by the signs that you explained only knocking in the morning points to a bad head gasket because overnight the head gasket leeches radiator antifreeze into one or more Pistons then in the morning it starts knocking to get rid of the moisture then after evaporation it will run better but you still have a bad head gasket check if you've been adding antifreeze coolant lately is a likely sign of a bad head gasket

@@Dethrones Start with the basics. Buy 2 bottles of Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner from Walmart and dump them both in the tank at the same time then fill it up with premium gas from a quality station like BP, Shell, Exxon, etc. Drive it and see if it gets better.

Mines a Toyota prius 2008? That would work the same as urs right. Even tho different years? Mines making that but louder. On the paper the previous owner had who took it to a shop. They said something about spark plugs (write messy so hard to read) would that mean. Thats my first thing to do? How many spark plugs the prius has?

Izzy Moon your model would be a Gen 2 (2004-2009). My Prius (the one in the vid) is a 2014 which is a Gen 3 (2010-2015) so it will be a bit different from yours. The Prius has 4 spark plugs.

Yes, I changed the spark plugs. One broke off inside, I was able to use an easy out Old Testament get it out and it worked! Replaced all the spark plugs and it took the issue away!

Head gasket 💯% You have low coolant there is lakes into the engine.. if any one have this problem fix it as soon as possible.

The head gasket damaged a little bit and the pressure of the hot water make small leak on the cylinder and the spark plugs will be covered a little bit with water

I just fixed my p0401 code, I replaced just the egr valve motor with a good one off eBay and no more code!! Getting 40-45mpg city...if you clean everything and still get a code its the egr motor going bad

Get Denso SC16HR11 revised version of cooler SC20HR11 not from Toyota dealer. It's much cheaper, only about$40 from Amazon or local stores.

@@VOTriniSky the Prius is tuned for Super fuel octane but with rain and water in fuel at some NP stations I got slight knock last week. Denso SC16HR11 is the revised hotter heat range Toyota/Lexus recommends now to prevent carbon build up as with the colder SC20HR11 if you drive lightly to save fuel.

@@lmccoon The cause of carbon deposit is not because of driving lightly, but short trip, driving in city at lower speed and open loop in wide open throttle/fast acceleration. Cleaning process is in the highway in light load/cruise speed. I open mine at 60k miles and put them back in since they are all fine and clean SC20HR11. Iridium plugs last more than 120k miles if there is no internal failure. Iridium is the hardest metal alloys, the failure is usually the inner Copper core or the resistor.

This old video popped up in my feed today. This is virtually ALWAYS a blown head gasket. VERY common on the Prius. Coolant leaks in when the engine is off and fills one or more cylinders with coolant. Then when you start it that cylinder not only doesn't fire but it hydrolocks. If not addressed you will end up with a bent connecting rod and often it comes apart and goes through the side of the engine block.

Not always. Don't put everyone with this issue into panic mode. Check the easy stuff first. If your antifreeze is not disappearing a head gasket is not the issue. Plugs, injectors, EGR first.

@@sardiver3 I said "virtually." Every time I've seen it it's been a head gasket. Cold start, 3-5 second misfire. Almost always head gasket.

hello for everyone ..when engine is getting too high mileage after starting from.pcv valve pulling by loyle under turtle body .and after from there is going whole of them system and then after is making so much oil EGR off old stuff system after that's why starting knocking the engine. do not get started get same problem again after cleaning all of them system you have to put it ...oil catch can.and after disturb it start getting separate oil to not be got all of them again in the system .after that when you did then you get in more talk and more economic because of its keeping in the system very clean .🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Coil packs fit over each of the spark plugs. Those are the $125 parts, not the spark plugs.

My 2009 third edition had a blown gasket. I temporarily fixed it by pouring K-Seal in the cooling liquid container. First time I did it the car ran 5000 km without issues, however the second bottle only lasted 2000 km and the third even less. I traded it in (fourth bottle of K-Seal) with 390.000 km for a slightly newer 2010 Prius. When the leakage is really bad it causes cilinder 1 misfires and the check engine light will burn. This will only happen if the problem persists, it happened only one day and I had to reset the ECU by unplugging the negative lead of the 12V battery.

Ir you have such noise and error P0401 you could be sure under 100% -that problem is with blocked EGR cooler and EGR valve! Checked on few vehicles.

I have this same issue, took it to dealership. And had to pay for extended test ($704) to why its happening and was told after that i need a new engine

Did you change ignition coils too? Any updates?

It was spark plugs on my 2010. Also if you haven’t and have 100k plus miles. Change the transmission fluid. These cars have electronics in the transmission and when fluid degrades over time it can short the sensors causing very poor shifting. New fluid usually fixes the issue. It’s a specific Toyota fluid so get the right stuff!

knocking caused by head gasket, I used a bottle of Steel Seal to fix my head gasket, drained the coolant, removed the thermostat, flushed the cooling system really good, Then use a radiator cleaner to clean the cooling system , Make sure to flush out all the cleaner 100%, When engine is 100% cold add steel seal with distilled water, turn heater on high & let idle for 30 mins with the radiator cap off........Let it cool for 1 hour the let idle again for 30 mins with the radiator cap on...........next morning let it idle for another 30 mins then removed all water from the system to let the steel seal cure for 24 hours, Replace the thermostat, fill with coolant and your good to go. Mine has been running perfect for 70k miles now as i use the car for uber & lyft, Only cost me about $120 total.

That could be the infamous Prius knock from a head gasket failure whereby coolant is leaking into the cylinders and causing hydro lock type problem. Since the Prius doesn’t have an electric starter, and instead uses the hybrid synergy drive to start engine, it literally forces the cylinders to try an compress that coolant in the compression stroke, which usually ends up throwing a rod (engine ends up failing).

do pressure test on the radiator coolant. It is most likely head gasket leak. The earlier you replace the head gasket the cheaper the damage on catalytic converter and cyinder wall.
