Today, Toyota unveiled to the world the all-new LC300 generation Land Cruiser. After more than a decade of selling the previous generation, Toyota finally caved and did a complete redesign, from the ground up. New chassis, new engine choices, new technology. But if you live in the United States, it doesn’t matter because Toyota confirmed it won’t sell it here and that’s probably because hardly anyone bought the last one.
Enthusiasts and the US contingent of Land Cruiser-diehards will undoubtedly cry foul, but there’s no getting around the cold hard facts of sales numbers. From its introduction in 2007 to 2020, the previous generation Land Cruiser struggled to keep the number of units sold per year above 3,000.
The culprit is likely a combination of factors. The $85,000 price tag and a fully-loaded-whether-you-like-it-or-not trim package on a Toyota luxury SUV forced potential buyers to cross-shop with more affordable Lexus counterparts. However, the second-hand market was the biggest competition, where you can easily find mint condition, low-mileage J200 Land Cruisers for $10,000-$15,000 less.
It also doesn’t help that the $30,000-cheaper Toyota Sequoia offered more utility with a larger cargo capacity and a similar level of luxury throughout the interior. The Sequoia also regularly outsold the Land Cruiser 3:1 over the past 10 years.
The 2022 Land Cruiser will ride on the TNGA platform and house a twin-turbo 3.5L V6 in place of the greedy 5.7L V8 present in the LC200. Mated to a ten-speed automatic, the new engine makes 409 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, which is a full 30 hp and 80 lb-ft more kick than the older, larger powerplant. It’s also more economical, though there will be an even more frugal 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel model headed to select markets.
Off-roaders will be pleased to know the SUV hasn’t been city-ified like so many others, either-it’s still four-wheel drive and actually over 400 lbs lighter than the LC200. Ground clearance is set at 230 mm, the approach angle has been kept at 32 degrees, and the departure angle has the ability to reach 26.5 degrees, model depending.
Toyota has also fitted it with adaptive variable suspension, and - a new acronym for you to add to your automotive vernacular - an electronically controlled kinetic dynamic suspension stabilization (E-KDSS) system. Those features will work out-of-sight, beneath drivers and passengers as they bump along trails and roads, but the Multi-Terrain Monitor that provides a real-time camera view of the obstacles beneath the vehicle brings some of the off-road fun inside.
The LC300 will come in three trims: a ZX base model, VX-R that will be for the Middle East exclusively, and a GR Sport edition.
Pricing and fuel economy have yet to be announced, but will likely follow shortly as the Land Cruiser is set to arrive - where it will arrive - later this year.
