Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series Complete Transmission Fluid Flush

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A complete transmission flush in a 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser 200 series. This video also includes the replacement of the transmission screen filter and removal of transmission oil pan.
This is my first video and I am open to comments on how to improve future videos. The Land Cruiser community is fantastic and, after having owned several older LC's, I thought I would try to start giving back a little since there aren't many videos on the 200 series. If you haven't already joined the ih8mud.com forum, check it out as there is a wealth of knowledge about these rigs there. Enjoy!

First and foremost thank you for the great video. Well done. I used this information to perform the ATF WS change on my 2013 Land Cruiser that had almost 120K miles on it. HELPFUL TIP: Be EXTREMELY CAREFUL when removing the (12) 10mm bolts for transmission pan removal. They break very easy even with a little force on 1/4” Drive Ratchet. Hindsight being 20/20 I would have simply gave it a good out of the cooler measuring amount as mentioned and poured in the same amount with new Toyota WS ( from my research my understanding is Toyota has not released it specifications to any manufacturer and the aftermarket does their best to achieve the WS formula and while some may be adequate it may not be worth risking the longevity of the transmission; Toyota WS will work perfectly). In my opinion, replacing the screen is not worth the risk and long hours you may spend drilling and tapping (m6-1.0 BTW) the transmission especially if you make a costly mistake. If you choose to proceed do so with caution especially if you have some rusty bolts.

Thanks for the comment Paul. Yes, I talk about the importance of taking care to clean the threads of the bolts that actually go all the through the housing. I think I started talking about those bolts at roughly 5:20. I've heard of others having the same issue - with breaking a bolt. Take care with all fasteners on these vehicles - especially if yours was subject to any salted roads...at any point in its life....

The majority of the stuff left on the magnets is clutch pack material. Your fluid was kinda dark but it was still red, definitelynot bad by any means. You need to remember that fluid gets cooked on a daily basis, of course the color is going to get darker. The engineers at Toyota have given us the ATF thermal degradation value, you can buy a relatively cheap scan tool to check how your fluid is doing by that number. The free floating clutch pack material actually helps the clutches engage due to it adding to pressures built up in the system. Toyota engineers know what they are doing.

You need to leave the paper clip holding the coolant valve open when performing the fluid level check procedure. Also when you removed the check plug in the video your transmission was low on fluid it's supposed to be trickling not dripping. I would recommend overfilling the transmission a little before performing the check procedure. Pro tip get a level and make sure the vehicle is level before you perform the check procedure. The first time I performed the check procedure the ground was flat but not level on either the x or the y axis(front to back or side to side) and I had to go back and do the procedure over. Overall a good video especially for your first.

So embarrassed; my apology "Remove the paper clip, yes..This ONE." could not be more clear. I've never done this before & would not have attempted w/o you excellent video! Your first video is better than ANY others I've watched with "channels." Some well meaning guy got me worried cuz he said to leave in the paperclip when checking, but I had excellent results & trust you. That said, I closely measured the old, nasty fluid removed (from the pan, filter & 2 flushes through the coolers (6.8 qt), put in 7 qt due to some spills, & took out 1.5 qt over-filled & I'm super worried I did something wrong or where did that extra fluid come from? So weird. Thanks

Hi, awesome, thorough video, so my only comment are listing the tools you use/like and where to buy, or you'll get a ton of questions like mine: 1) could u tell me a bit more about how to get the 3 qt. of fluid out of the trans fluid cooler? 2) what tap & die set did you buy (make/model) and where did you get it, so I can buy one? 3) how did you know to flush the trans cooler? I am doing my literally in 12 hours, cuz I paid Toyota $380 for this "better than fluid change/pan drop nonsense" cuz they flush "all of the old out, and go in w/the new;" however I had to replace my radiator and you will too if yours is an 2008; if you make it to 130K, look for it and watch it, cuz a hairline horizontal crack will appear to the left of the radiator fluid cap, and you'll blow fluid all over the inside; ours blew right after a 4K mile trip to Breckenridge, so dodged a bullet, but I did the job myself, and how I learned Sterling McCall Toyota in Spring, TX "DID NOT" even do the trans flush, cuz I had driven just 16K miles since paying them, only to find, black, tar like sludge coming from the radiator/trans lines when I was expecting red or at least pink fluid. They were cool, considered paying for it, but another Toyota dealer, said it may have been done (they look out for each other), so I'm doing a pan drop on all 4 of my LC's cuz I don't trust them and want to ensure done right. Watch for that radiator; 100% of the 08s happen between 100-130 max; how they got away w/o a recall is beyond me, and it's a huge job for 1 person, not like seen on utube; 11 hrs out, 9 hours in. Brutal. The mounting brackets are hidden and nearly impossible to reach w/a socket. I digress. 4) Best trans/pan drop video I've seen and I've worked on my LCs for 18 years & never considered rust or dirt on the treads before this video; thank you. 5) I'm going to just capture all of the old oil, measure it, and go in w/the exact amount (well, planned to before your video; how will flushing the trans cooler mess that up or not at all? That's it and sorry so much. Thanks for your help and fine/well done video. Great job by your helper. Oh, did you run the truck through the gears when you were flossing the trans cooler or just leave in park? Maybe u said; sorry if so, so late and tired. Best, Tyler

Thanks for the comment. You are correct in that the thermostat should be open when you check the level. If you follow the procedure in the Factory Service Manual - it will essentially tell you when to check the fluid level....meaning the transmission is up to operating temperature (which would ensure the thermostat is open).

Thanks for this superb video, top notch! I have a question about "jumping two ports of the OBD". I don't know what this means. I'll be doing a 2010 FJ Cruiser. Toyota's instructions for checking temperature of the FJ say, "Using SST, connect terminals TC and CG of the DLC3". I don't know what this means nor how to do it either. Perhaps you can help shed some light on this. Could I just use a laser thermometer to check the transmission pan bottom temperature, (which should be the same temperature as the fluid)? Many thanks!!

Hello Chris, As odd as it sounds, you are literally creating a jumper to connect to of the terminal ports of the OBD connecter together. You can use a paper clip or piece of thick wire to connect terminals 4 to 13 - on my 200 series. I'm not sure if it would be the same for your FJ. Good luck!

nice job making this video. As you have removed the fluid returning to the pump, arent you running the transmission low on fluid, or no fluid, using this technique? could this create air bubbles in the return system that would cause low fluid once they work themselves out? also which website are the toyota tech docs on that you used? nice recovery on the stripped plug, seemed like work that had to get done anyways, it was a sign!

Hello! Sorry for the late reply! I was draining fluid from the second transmission cooler (in the radiator). I would drain a specific amount (2-3 quarts) and then add that back in to the transmission. The pan hold a lot more than that in reserve so you shouldn't be running it low. If you notice, I did start to see a little aeration in the fluid that was being expelled when I was draining 3 quarts at a time - so to be safe I'd recommend 2 quarts at a time.

Hello! Its been a year and roughly 14000 miles and doing great. A "Flush" at a dealer or quick-lube place usually involves a pressure flush where they are forcing transmission fluid through the system with an external pump. This will cause sludge and debris to clog up lines, etc... It is definitely recommended NOT to use one of those services. In this case we are using the transmission pump itself to move the fluid through just like it would normally be operating....except now it is getting fresh fluid and expelling dirty fluid. The method I did in the video is too time consuming for a dealer or quick-lube place to do. Thank you!

Hi Sergo - sorry for the late reply...I didn't do it that way becuase then you are mixing clean fluid and dirty fluid, and draining a mixture of clean and dirty fluid. The method I chose is essentially interrupting the flow of the fluid (in one direction) so that when you start to see clean fluid you know you've gotten nearly all the dirty fluid out and replaced it with clean.

Overfilling the pan and pumping the ATF out of the cooler line by measuring to not allow the pump to run dry is a perfectly acceptable way to exchange fluid. Draining and filling as you say is a lazy ass way to do it. And WTF are "transfer case lines"? The transfer case has nothing to do with the transmission with regards to lubricants.
