This is the sequence to enter the check battery screen:
- Without brake pedal, press the Power button once and release to enter ACC mode
- Press and hold the MFD Info button, then turn the headlights on and off three times to enter Maintenance mode; release Info button
- Press “Menu” (on screen)
- Press “Display Check”
- Press “Vehicle Signal Check” - the battery voltage is shown and should be about 12.4 to 12.8 Volts (normal for an unloaded battery)
- Again without brake pedal, press Power button and release to put a current load on the battery - the voltage should stay above 12.0V (if less than 12.0V the battery is not well, or there is a fault or unusual load somewhere)
- Press brake pedal and press Power button once to enter "Ready" mode - the battery is now charging at about 14V (if less than 13.6V or more than 14.4 there may be a problem with the charging circuit)
- Turn car OFF to leave Maintenance mode

The voltage should actually be at 14 when you're in ready mode. It should drop when you're actually driving, between 12 and 13.

TONY,T, I'VE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO ME TWICE ON MY 2008 PRIUS THAT MY WIFE DRIVES. EACH TIME SHE GOT HOME WITH IT, ALL THE DASH LIGHTS WERE ON INCLUDING THE TRIANGLE W/ EXCLAMATION. ALL I COULD THINK OF REAL QUICK WAS, THESE CARS EVEN CONVENTIONAL ARE COMPUTERS ON WHEELS (REBOOT). SO I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY POST AT THE FUSE BOX UNDER THE HOOD, RECONNECTED AFTER ONE MINUTE AND ALL WENT BACK TO NORMAL AGAIN.I'M NOT SAYING I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING BUT IT WORKED FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS BEFORE DOING IT THE SECOND TIME. I HAD THE CODE CHECKED AFTER THE SECOND REBOOT AND SHOWED (1256) WHICH I WAS TOLD MEANT THE BRAKE ACTUATOR, A $2000.00 JOB. I'LL PUT THAT OFF UNTIL THE REBOOTS QUIT WORKING . HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEBODY.

Hey everybody. After an unusual cold spell the 12V starter battery was shot again. I bought it in 2019 so it shouldn`t have quit. Often times these batteries have a three year warranty. So double check the date on the battery and/or the receipt if you still have it. They swapped mine for 0 Dollars!

  • @TheKochFamily

Not a stupid question. Yes, the Prius -just like any other car- has a 12V starter battery. In my 2008 Prius model it is located in the back on the passenger side in a little compartment. You have to empty out the back, lift the big hatch thing and loosen a few screws to replace it. You can see it as you go what needs to be unscrewed. Good luck.

This exact thing happened to me today. My Prius 2006 hadn't been started since more than a month. It was dead . So today I jump started it with the help of a friend's car. And as soon as I began driving, within a few meters, the Check Engine light, the Master Warning red triangle and the Hybrid System Warning indicator appeared. I am just thinking of taking your advice and getting the 12v battery replaced. Any thing else you would suggest? I would appreciate your input if possible, and Thanks for the video.

One thing I did was after this all happened to me on one occasion the new starter battery went low again. I disconnected the battery from the car and charged it with a trickle charger, it took half the day but then was fine ever since. Good luck to you!! Let me know how it went...

Look first at the Inverter Coolant level. I had the same problem and after a while I noticed there was no coolant in the Inverter coolant reservoir. I filled it with filtered water and straight away the errors went away and the Hybrid System was working again. Then I noticed liquid coming out of the radiator....a rock had made a small hole in the inverter coolant radiator (the little one on top.). I found another inverter coolant radiator and replaced it. Put it all back together and no more problems.

Sorry I didn’t see your comment. Maybe something else is wrong too. Have it checked by a Toyota dealer. Reading the codes does cost though. I know that for our Prius model there was a recall for the hybrid cooling system pump. Only a Toyota dealer would know if that applies to your model.

@@bvjazz1 I went with an aftermarket battery purchased at O'Reilly in Minnesota. So far so good. I know there are kill switches for batteries used in trucks and also our school bus will have one. Not sure about having them remote controlled. Also keep in mind every time you disconnect the battery all settings are lost radio etc. I charged the battery once with a trickle charger and it worked fine. I did disconnect it from the car system though. I do not believe the 200mpg thing... that seems to be too good to be true. Our Prius is a 2008 and we can not plug it in.

The red warning light remained. It's just an old car that I use to keep milage off my newer vehicles, and I got it for a very low price. There is a terminal to jump start the Prius. It is under the hood in one of the fuse boxes. The positive goes on that terminal, the negative somewhere on the chassis. I am not sure what could have happened. Maybe you blew a fuse, maybe you damaged more than that be reversing polarity (did I read the correctly?). I would search the internet and/or get an OBD 2 reader and read the error codes. Sorry that happened! Hope it can get fixed. Get your momma some flowers. :-)
