    I was planning to replace my water pump on 2015 prius but i watched a video that says "do not throw away your pump, replace only rotor!" After that video, i ordered the rotor from a Toyota dealership online just for 11.40 USD. I had no idea how to remove the rotor until i watched your video. Thank you so much.

    Beware of just replacing the impeller. I did the same thing and my car ran fine for a week then the new impeller broke in half . I am now ordering the whole OEM Water Pump which includes the impeller and a 12month warrantee for peace of mind. My thoughts being that the impeller might not have been a good enough fit .

    The dealer diagnosed a failing water pump on my 2010 Prius and graciously offered to replace it for $890. I politely declined and ordered the Aisin (OEM manufacturer) pump from RockAuto for $248. The RockAuto/Aisin pump was identical to the factory pump with the exception that "Toyota" had been ground off. Not having even seen the water pump on my car before, I did everything slowly and carefully. After 2 1/2 hours the job was complete. Including the overnight shipping for the new pump, I saved $130 for each of its 5 bolts. I'm just a self-taught DIY guy and had no shop manual or "factory training". No wonder that dealerships are called "stealerships" by guys like us.

    Was it in fact ground off or do you mean missing? As in maybe Aisin had a cast mold that did not have the Toyota words to fill in when making the housing thumbs up for your information

    The appearance (different color/grain) is that the Toyota name was cast in and then literally ground off. To me, this means that I got the same part from RockAuto that came in the car or would come from a dealer's shelf. I feel good about it.

    @@johndorrell1Aisin makes the pumps so you are correct. Remember that the dealership is a business and has overhead. There are plenty of repairs on your Prius that a DIY guy can’t do properly without a dealer grade scan tool. I’m a technician and see it. Luckily these cars are tanks for the most part

    Would enjoy another video like this on the Prius ABS pumps that explains why they have a high failure rate. Also, what changes Toyota made to make them better.

    Those are thermal pads used to transfer heat from the mosfets (or the alike) on the opposite side of the circuit board to the aluminium case.

    The cover on the electronics is a thermal pad to transfer heat

    Place the pump with the connector up. Top pin is North, to the right is NE. then on the bottom left SW, and the bottom is S. My old rotor moves, but with resistance. Applied grease for the test. There is some capacitive conductivity only between NE and SW poles. It shows resistivity, that grows to infinity. Reverse the poles, same thing, i.e. capacitor is charged. Applied pos to the NE and neg to SW pins, and the pump moves. Turns for a while, then stops, and produces a high pitch sound. This is in agreement with the sporadic overheating we observed. The new pump Osias and will keep watching it.

    the brushless motor pump is probably fine and the impeller rotor is stuffed which you can just replace

    Can you do a valve adjustment on a 2015 tacoma 4x4 with the 1GRFE engine for me? I live 3 hours away from your area & nobody down here will do it. They all say "nobody bothers to do those". I'm convinced it needs to be done.

    Peter that is an impeller, NOT a propeller. Centrifugal pumps have impellers. Marine outboard motors and non-jet aircraft have propellers.

    I can only share my one DIY first-time experience - 2 1/2 hours going very slowly. The pump itself is 5 bolts and one electrical connector. Most of the time was draining coolant and removing intake items to gain access and the reverse process. No special tools or problems. A Toyota technician here on KZread said these pumps are prone to failure at about 80k miles.

    much easier, because there is no belts. You can collect the coolant in clean vesssel and reuse it if it is pink and nice. coolant is rated to last 300,000 miles.

    @@johndorrell1 some of them never fail, and others do. I changed mine at 150 k miles as a prevetative matter. Make sure you replace it with an Aisin one, not a cheap replacement

    Just guessing that one of the hall effects is not working or is intermittent. This causes the microcontroller to not know where the shaft is exactly and where to put power

    Is that a free floating magnetic stirrer? The magnet aligns the rotor. It floats on coolant as lube. So what was wrong? Just electronic problem? It certainly looks puny.

    Does this pump use a 3-phase motor ? I'm also curious if the Toyota Prius Gen2 Inverter coolant water pump is also a 3-phase motor.

Those funny rubber-like things help transfer the heat from the power FETS to the case. kzread.info/dash/bejne/k2F31chrYc3Uo7g.html You have three exposed; the other one will have another three under there. Hence that big aluminum case will keep the electronics cool. There is a microprocessor to convert the DC power to three-phase (hence six power FETS). I worked at Robert Bosch in Germany, then later at Motorola in Texas. I like electric motors and vehicles! This was our prototype test mule. evalbum.com/121.html Just a little ahead of the time. Thank you for the tip on Sauerkraut; I like Hengstenberg - a product of Bavaria. Parkinson's limits my wrenching; I haven't made a YT video in ages but keep up the good work (my local Toyota dealer shows a video of fluid changes, your license plate, your vehicle, and what they are doing).

    @@somemedic You must mean on a normal ICE vehicle? Unless there is a shaft where a pulley can run off of in an electric or hybrid vehicle..

    Just had a vehicle with a failed alternator. Lights flashing on the dash. Because it was not generating, power system could not drive the electric steering assist and reverted back to no power steering

    @@somemedic I've had 3 Toyota cars since 1986, the first two had hydraulic steering and both had to be replaced due to the hoses going bad. My latest Toyota already with close to 200,000 miles has had zero issues with power steering system. I realize that once the motor does break, it will need to be replaced. But there are no high pressure hoses to go bad and need to be replaced. Also remember, the hydraulic system always has to be working, the electric motor only works when you turn the wheel.

    That's a $300 pump, I do a couple a year, usually the impeller breaks off the shaft

    Aisin is also Toyota's excellent transmission supplier, obviously they know what they're doing. I don't like the fact that Toyota makes some crucial parts in Mexico

    Highly recommend their water pump and timing kit as well for when the time comes to change the belt. Gates is now suspect in parts manufacture. Possibly worse than Mexico, China..

    I wonder about that too. While I have never changed an electric water pump I have done alot of prius inverter pumps which are electrical

    @@danh2134 Seems like the automakers stick electronics into everything these days, from water pumps and A/C blend door actuators to throttles and door handles, and even hood latches. And don't forget electrical power steering. Fancy, complex and expensive? Definitely. Better? I am not sure.

    @@paulparoma wrong, in EVs and hybrids the electric pumps are precisely controlled and the motor has no belt or chain driven accessories. There have been more and more electronics in cars for years

    The defective design leads to the splitting of the plastic ring around the inadequately-designed impeller that causes the impeller to jam. Poor AISAN design responsible for thousands of head gasket failures without warning. Keeps "Gasket Masters" on You Tube incredibly busy. The best Prius was GEN 2 with the old mechanical water pump that costs a fraction of this water pump to replace. GEN 2 does not need a catch can or EGR service. Lastly, the GEN 2 does not have a water-cooled catalytic converter. GEN 3 started Prius quality going downhill.

    Electric pumps on the Prius last longer than the conventional ones, there are Priuses out there with 200,000 miles and still everything original.
