Toyota Hilux Overland Setup - Phase 2.0 : Suspension Upgrade! Old Man Emu

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Like most adventurous souls, Experience Wild Africa had many plans for the first half of 2020
There was the Botswana "Father & Son" Overland trip to the famous and wild Moremi Delta region, and a lot of preparation to make this trip even better than the trips before.
I planned a 6-step, "Phase 2.0" of my Toyota Hilux Overland setup, and as with all people worldwide, Covid-19 and the ensuing Lockdown, changed all of those plans....
- The Botswana trip has been postponed to 2021. (But we will be joining a group of friends on the Giyani River Run trip in August 2020)
- The Phase 2.0 of the Hilux Overland setup could at least be started -
I did manage to replace the suspension of the Hilux, just before the lockdown started in February 2020. The rest of the 6 steps are in some form or other under way (lockdown restrictions permitting).
This is the first of a short series of each of the 6-steps to take our Toyota Hilux Overland Setup to the next level!

I have a Hilux 2.8 and an XT140 and was looking forward to hearing your impression of whether the suspension upgrade worked, but the video just ended. I know with lockdown it's difficult, but maybe could you split your findings into 2 videos, 1 for road handling and 1 for off-road handling. I think there are quite a lot of Hilux owners that would like to know whether the upgrade was worth it. Anyway thanks for the video!

Hi Sean, Yes lockdown has had an effect on our efforts to enjoy the outdoors. I have been very impatient with all of the upgrades and off course testing out my new gear. Definitely I will be providing feedback on the suspension, both on- and off-road! Keep an eye on the channel for future videos

Hi Sean, We spent Friday doing game viewing on gravel roads in the Dinokeng Game Reserve. Paved road travelling has improved, and the gravel roads also showed a huge improvement over my previous suspension setup I can definitely tell you that the suspension fitted made a huge difference! I just came back from a wonderful day out on a 4x4 trail. ( Hennops 4x4 Trail) The new suspension was absolutely awesome!! I have improved wheel articulation, corrugations and rocky driving has improved with leaps and bounds. I am most certainly a happy man! :-D (Video about our days fun will be released in the near future)

I have a Ford Everest and an XT120 with standard suspension, what would you suggest I look at if one is a bit cash strapped but looking at improving the suspension for a better drive?

Hi Hein, This is a tricky one as it would depend on your needs. If you seldom venture off road with the trailer, let the standard suspension do it's thing. If you are unhappy about it, chat to someone at 4x4 Mega World or similar, for professional advise - You may not need to replace your suspension in total, but only fit airbags as an example.

Hello Sir, i hope you can help me with my inquiry. I have a fortuner 2018 4x2 and have plans of upgrading the stock suspensions to Old man EMU, well there are lots of suspensions from Ironman Foamcell to Toughdog to Tein 4x4 Damper sport. How is your ride after the installation of OME ? On and off road ?

Hi AD 7 Apologies for the late reply, My honest opinion is that the ride quality is very very nice indeed. Especially when loaded. The standard suspension is just not capable of delivering the same ride quality and performance like the OME. My Brother has the same vehicle than me, and he fitted Tuff Dog adjustable shocks with blades and he is also much happier than with the stock suspension.. It is a huge sum of money to spend, but a definite improvement is achieved both On and Off road

It depends on what you need I am looking at fox . I drive 90% dirt road and our roads are bad coricated rocky and holes I need to ride plush the Toyota hilux rides very hard so if you drive 200km gravel road each day with very little load what drives the softest

Hi Eric, Yes, as most things off road related, it depends on your needs! (Apologies up front for the long answer) For our Overland travel, I needed something that will assist with the loads we carry across various types of terrain. I believe there are VERY good options out there: OME, Tough Dog, IronMan, Fox, etc. etc. My experience with OME *never disappointed* me in almost 2 decades of travelling. Installing a set of shocks which offer selectable options (rebound and compression), be it BP51's from OME or the Ironman variety (to name just two), this will allow you to set in / adjust to your circumstances - right there next to the road. Be it "No load - bad roads", or rock crawling or "load with bad roads" etc. It is expensive, but safety and enhancing your vehicles ability to allow you to travel the roads you do, is paramount in my point of view! This said. Do your vehicle setup first, then go for the suspension upgrade, as this will allow you to choose the correct suspension and components based on your vehicle requirements. i.e. OME 400kg and 600kg constant load leaf springs makes a huge difference, if you are loaded or not. So the big question remains: What is wrong with OEM (Original Equipment) from lets say Toyota? Vehicles are designed according to the "average Joe" requirements, which is not bad, but the Average Joe might only go off the road once a year. So why increase costs and include a super duper suspension if most people are not in need of it? In South Africa, any changes to lets say your suspension is considered an aftermarket upgrade. It is not standard equipment from the floor. I *believe* Toyota does keep the Factory Warranty when you do install OME's, cannot say for the others.... I hope this helps. Cheers
