Toyota 3.4 Liter 5VZ-FE Engine Replacement (Part 1 - Engine Removal)

Did our video help you? If so, consider buying us a beer: bit.ly/3feE6tJ
*PLEASE READ THIS AND THE COMMENT WE PINNED*
This video is Part 1 or a 4 part video series showing you how to swap out the 3.4 liter V6 motor out of your 3rd Gen 4runner, 1st Gen Tacoma, Older Tundra or T100. In this Part, we walk you through the steps of removing the old motor. In Part 2, we show you how to strip down the old motor of the parts you’ll need to swap over to the new motor. In Part 3, we install all the necessary old parts and some new parts onto the new motor. In Part 4, we show you how to install the new engine.
The vehicle we performed this job on is a 1997 4runner. If you have one of the earlier model 3rd Gen 4runners or earlier model 1st Gen Tacomas, T100, or older Tundra, your engine and engine compartment will pretty much look identical to the one we're working on. If you have one of the newer model 3rd Gen 4runners 2001 and 2002, or one of the newer 1st Gen Tacomas 2001 - 2005, you will notice slight differences. One is the throttle body design was changed and you will only have one cable attached to it, the throttle cable. The Evap canister on the 01 and 02 4runners isn't in the engine compartment, it's under the vehicle near the spare tire. Another difference you might see is in regards to the heater hoses. Rey's rig has the rear heater option but your rig might not have it. So, if you have the rear heater option, your heater hose routing will look identical. If you don't have a rear heater, you will notice less hoses to deal with.
There’s different ways to go about doing this job. We decided to follow the Toyota Factory Service Manual’s suggestion of 1st removing the transmission and transfer case out of the way. Some people decide to keep the transmission and transfer case bolted to the frame cross member. We thought it would be easier to mate up the transmission to the engine using a transmission jack as opposed to trying to mate up the engine to the transmission with the engine suspended on an engine hoist. We don’t show the necessary steps to pull the trans and transfer case because we already show that in two different video series, our Automatic Transmission Replacement Series and our Clutch Replacement Series (If you have a manual transmission). These series will give you all the information you need to either pull the transmission and transfer case out of the way like we did, or give you the information you need to know on how to separate the engine from the transmission if you’re going to keep the transmission and transfer case in place on the frame. @@bodyzoasispersonaltraining9186 Do you need every single tool listed? No. Do tools make your life easier? Yes. Tools are an investment that continue to save you money. Some specialty tools are potentially one-time use, but you can always sell them if you think you'll never need them again. When shops charge anywhere from $150-300/hour, I think I'll make the tools investment. Shop mechanics also screw up a lot. I like having the satisfaction the job gets done right. Things to think about it.

Tim, I wanted to fill you with some information about the T100 swap. I have everything swapped over from the 4 runner engine. Your guide is flawless. Differences for the T100, and more specifically a 4 runner motor is that the dipstick predrilled hole is in a difference location. The old motor in my T100 was a 4wd version, same motor, but the stick goes on the side, and not the front. No hole to swap places either. So when you switch pans, the dipstick won’t fit all the way in the front. And you gotta reuse the sump pump from the old engine, also cut the dipstick too so it will seat. This worked amazing for the T100, thank you for the guide. Mines a 95 and so it’s OBD1 so swap over the sensors and your gold. Thank you ray for making it happen as well. Cheers!

This is a great video tutorial for us non-mechanics; I have a blown gasket in my 2000 Toyota Tacoma, 5 speed, 2.4L and I was told to do a complete engine overhaul and quote too expensive for my taste; so I have decided to gather some info how to do this; I already did an overhaul and rebuild to our other 2004 Toyota Corolla which engine have been sitting under a tarp for 3 years outside but it would have to be into the bay at some point; I did it all myself as far as taking the engine out and apart; bought everything new on it after sandblasting block and head, re-bore and rectify after checking for cracks all good; a shop put the head back together for me and I took time with the timing and rebuilt carefully following the Hynes Manual and asking Toyota Mechanics from the Dealer; that Corolla needs to be assembled then the AC needs repair and it also has a recall for air bags, meanwhile the Tacoma was brought out of sitting 6 years on driveway and after replacing the Fuel Pump which was toasted at a cost of $400.00 from Autozone plus $270.00 to the mechanic that did the labor, the truck ran for few miles, started to overheat (no coolant or water enough in the tank, only less than a gallon and nobody checked!) and quickly I brought it home but once I turn the ignition off, next time it would not start; what i thought it was a bad started came to be the blown gasket after a compression test showed zero in piston 1 and 3 and 180 on 2 and 4.....Mechanic wants to fix it for $700.00 labor plus parts; he suggests an engine swap; I rather rebuilt this one as that engine has never been opened before and mileage is 209000...i thought of doing just the gasket but since I am not planning to sell the truck maybe could go all the way and rebuild, providing i can take it out of the bay on my own and get the parts as I did with the Corolla before; 2 giant task for someone like me who is not this type of mechanic; my work is Electro-Mechanical engineering but car mechanic is a science on its own. Your video gives me an idea what to expect, even it is not the same truck it can not be that much different; I hope the Tacoma Manual transmission is easier than this one here!

I'm glad you appreciate what the 4 of us did. What I told Sean, Rey and Joe is nobody, and I mean NOBODY was going to document this job to the level we did. It was an incredible amount of work to shoot this series. We showed everything in great detail so a total beginner could actually swap out their motor whether they're just simply pulling the motor and installing a used one or they are doing exactly what we did and pulling the motor, swapping over parts to a rebuilt and installing it. We pretty much know most people swapping out a 3.4 liter engine will consult our series at some level to help them with the job. It is to date the project I am most proud of to document. No doubt it will help keep more Toyotas on the road and out of the wrecking yards. It was a pleasure working with Rey and Joe. They are both great guys and I'm glad it was them we teamed up with to document this important job. Thanks for the comment. We appreciate it very much. Happy Wrenching!

Don't be nervous about using an old wiring harness. There's not a lot that can go wrong with them. As long as the wires haven't been compromised by a rodent eating the wires or there was an electrical fire, the harness will be fine to reuse. Off Road Solutions builds wiring harnesses for people swapping from one engine to a different engine but I don't know if it would be worth the money to have them build a stock harness for you. • @TimmyTheToolman

    @TimmyTheToolman

    3 жыл бұрын

Hey Erik, it's hard to give people advice on lifts because there's so much to consider. How are you going to use your rig? How much weight are you going to be carrying? What size tires do you plan on running. How much money do you want to invest? If all you care about is looks, you could go for some cheap Rough Country lift. If you plan on ripping through the desert, you would probably want a very expensive long travel lift. Something that would be affordable but decent would be a lift from Toytec or OME. If you want a more plush but expensive lift, King or Icon are popular choices. Do yourself a favor and be honest with how you think you're going to use your rig and that will narrow down your search. Could you spend $4,000 on a long travel kit so you can just cruise the mall parking lot? Of course you could. But, in my opinion, that's a huge waste of money. If you're going to do some hard core wheeling, go to town and spend a fair amount of money on your lift, armor, bumpers, winch, etc.

I don't know how it could no be aligned right.

Is rebuilding original engine or swapping engines the better option? 230K miles on the engine 1st owner planning on keeping the truck pass it on to my 9yr old, your help is greatly appreciated 👍

You could address the piston that has the worn out rod bearings but I think the cost to fix the damage the piston had created may exceed the cost of just throwing a new/used engine in there. It will save time which could save money. If you are willing to take your chances with a used engine, this will definitely be the more cost effective solution. If you’re like Rey and want a dependable engine for long trips in the wilderness, I would recommend getting an engine you can trust which means new or rebuilding it to be sure it’s sound and trustworthy.

hey timmy, would appreciate a word of advice here. just blew my 1997 4runner's geadgasket and am considering my options. it's at 192k miles and is currently hydro-locked due to coolant in cylinder #3. also have coolant in oil. what would you do in this situation? replace the headgasket and risk possible bottom end issues? or would you just swap in another used engine? unsure what i'll do. thanks!

I would try to fix the head gasket issue if it were me. These engines are known to last over 400k so doing the labor involved could very well worth your time. With a used engine, you really don't know what you're getting.

I've read all of the comments here and haven't yetwatched your trans removal video. I'm down to one 17mm bolt. It is the bottom most bolt on the passenger side that holds the engine to the trans. It is fully obstructed by two lines from the trans to the bottom of the radiator. Even if the trans and the engine were pulled as a unit it would be ridiculous to remove. I'm going to have to remove it 1/32nd of a turn at a time. F'ing ridiculous. 2004 Tacoma. Spent four hours (alone) just to remove the starter and bust the trans bolts loose. And that's with the heads and oil pan already removed. I have also removed the grill and the radiator. From my perspective the trans and engine should be removed/installed together as a unit. Removing the engine alone is proving to be very difficult.

Sounds like you've had quite the battle. Your 1st Gen Tacoma shouldn't be that much different than a 3rd Gen 4runner. They have the same drivetrain. Maybe you should have disconnected the trans cooler lines to make it easier to get that bolt out. If you've tried to remove an engine and trans as one unit, you'd know that's not exactly easy either.

Are you looking to swap the motor or do head gaskets? Have you confirmed the engine is burning the coolant rather than a small leak somewhere? Have you done a compression and leak down test to find out which cylinder(s) are the culprit.

Well, I don't necessarily agree with you Tyrone. Yes, you could remove the fan clutch with it attached to that outer pulley doing it the way you say, but we wanted them separated. I've seen the fan clutch locked onto the outer pulley on multiple vehicles so it's very common to be a bit of a fight.

I think you can do it by keeping the trans bolted in. It would be beneficial if you could get someone's help when it comes time to getting the engine aligned with the trans though. It's always a struggle getting the engine aligned with the trans or the trans aligned with the engine. It's a pain in the ass every time. Having an extra set of hands just makes it less of a pain in the ass. Glad you appreciate the video and good luck with the job.

If you have the money and you plan on keeping your rig for a long time, a rebuild would be the smart way to go. You just don't know what you're getting when you go with a used one. You might get lucky and get a great one and then again you might get a crappy one that only lasts a short time before you have major issues with it. I know if I'm ever in the need of a replacement engine, I'll have Yota1 Performance rebuild one for me.

Hey guys, I have a quick question about swapping engines between sub-generations of the 3rd gen 4runner. I have a factory 2000 engine, will that engine directly swap into a 2002 4runner? I know there are some minor differences, but the concern is that it would throw codes, do you know the “easiest” way to prevent that?

  • @TimmyTheToolman

For the most part yes. You will have to use the throttle body from your 2002 but the rest of it should be the same. I would just swap over your plenums and throttle body over to the other engine and you should be good to go. You won't throw any codes.

Yes, you can pull your 3.4 without pulling the trans. It's personal preference how you do it and it's debatable which is easier. After doing a swap on a 2nd Gen 4runner and deciding to keep the trans and transfer case connected to the frame, I think I would probably for now on keep the trans connected. If you have an automatic trans, you will find the process is easier than if you have a manual trans.
