The toys are back in town and ready to play once again in Toy Story 2, the exciting sequel to the landmark 1995 animated blockbuster from Disney/Pixar. This comedy-adventure picks up as Andy heads off to Cowboy Camp leaving his toys to their own devices. Things shift into high gear when an obsessive toy collector named Al McWhiggin (Wayne Knight), owner of Al's Toy Barn, kidnaps Woody (Tom Hanks). At Al's apartment, Woody discovers that he is a highly valued collectible from a 1950s TV show called "Woody's Roundup," and he meets the other prized toys from that show - Jessie the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), Bullseye the horse and Stinky Pete the Prospector (Kelsey Grammer). Back at the scene of the crime, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and the gang from Andy's room -- Mr. Potato Head (Don Rickles), Slinky Dog (Jim Varney), Rex (Wallace Shawn) and Hamm (John Ratzenberger) -- spring into action to rescue their pal from winding up as a museum piece. The toys get into one predicament after another in their daring race to get Woody home before Andy returns.

Something I don't see mentioned very often is the scene where Woody turns on the show for Buzz and the other toys. On the outside it seems pretty basic, but upon further examination it brings up an interesting point. We actually hear Jessie thanking Woody and Bullseye for rescuing her, followed up by Woody's message about treasuring your friends and family. This leads me to believe that the show wasn't canceled before its final episode, but that Stinky Pete simply hid it from everyone to gain more sympathy for his cause.

I didn't realize until I rewatched the first movie with you, but the reason that Woody's arm tears so easily is because it's the same one that was being torn when he was trying to get into the moving truck - When Spike is pulling on him and Buzz is trying to get him into the moving truck his arm started to rip, but it's so cool that they used a whole sequel to utilize that tiny detail in the storyline (:

So... fun fact, we almost never got Toy Story 2... twice. It was legit an accident. Someone accidentally ran a computer command, which at the time literally started wiping files off the system. They noticed that after two months of animation and production, some of the files which were about 40 plus were reduced to less than 4. By the time they stopped and tried to salvage the film, there was only 10 percent left. That's right. 90% of the movie was gone. The reason they believe it happened, the accidental deletion was that one of the animators hit the wrong command (computer security wasn't fairly good at the time.) 150 animators were working on Toy Story 2 and in 1998, 400 people were simultaneously working on A Bug's Life. Any one of them could have made the mistake since the deletion command could have come from any of their terminals. Back then, in 1998, one of the newest forms of saving backup files was on tapes. That's right, computer tapes. Each one was about the size of a VHS tape and only had a max size of 6 gigabytes. But thankfully, they managed to get their work back. Heres the next problem that caused another panic. The version of the movie saved on the backups they had was, as a metaphor, version 20 and the version they needed for the final release was 420. The movie was in fact using really poor backups. The movie was trashed again. That is... until fate stepped in. One of the key animators, Susman, the supervising technical director, who had given birth to her son at the time of making this film, was working from home. She literally had a computer graphics station and system set up at home. When the film was in the process of being lost, they literally went to her house and discovered she had a full copy of the movie. In order for her to work on the movie while from home, they had plugged the machine up to the local network and copied the whole file tree over. Then she would receive incremental updates over her ISDN internet connection. For those not in the know, that was like two 56kbps modems duct-taped together (welcome to 1998). But thankfully, just before the file deletion problem, the backups, a couple of weeks old had updated and been sent to her home computer. Remember, this was before wifi and this was before computers were sophisticated enough to have smaller harddrives and servers. They literally had to drive to her house and retrieve the entire computer, and whatnot. In the middle of the meeting, they literally hopped on the car and drove all the way to her house, unplugged the computer and then safely wrapped it in blankets, put seatbelts on and drove safely back to the studio. When they got there, they carried it on plywood like a pharoah and had to plug it in and do an actual check of the files. Over the course of the next week, the crew worked overtime checking and double checking the files. They were all good but they still had to before releasing it. Here's why we almost never got this movie a second time. Remember how I said that A Bug's Life had a Fall of 1998 release? Toy Story 2 was slated to release in November of 1999. Set in stone. Just after A Bug's Life came out, they had a meeting to see the test footage of Toy Story 2. The completed part thanks to Susman's backup computer. They didn't like the story at all. So they spent the next several months adding in everything that you see in the Toy Story 2 final version now. The Al's Toy Barn sequence stayed and all the characters. But the rest of the film was remade and new. XD

The line in the movie about "shortsighted distributers did not buy enough [Buzz Lightyear] figures to meet demands" was a meta reference. After the first movie, the Buzz Lightyear action figures were THE hot ticket item, but stores just didn't think it would be that successful and they rapidly sold out and became very difficult to find.

The old guy who fixes Woody is Geri from the short Geri's Game (shown before A Bug's Life in theaters), voiced by Jonathan Harris (who voiced Manny the mantis from A Bug's Life). Originally Al was going to be the one being to fix Woody bu the Lasseter and co thought that Al wouldn't be able to do these stuff and rather call a guy. Since this decision were done late in production, they didn't have time to make a new character model, so they simply recycled Geri from the short and made it a reference.

Some of the scenes that were cut from Toy Story 1 are recycled for TS2. The first movie was meant to open up with an episode of Buzz Lightyear animated show (which was planned to be 2D animated like Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, which got released shortly after TS2 premiered) were Buzz confronts and defeats Zurg. It was altered a bit into a Buzz Lightyear video game. Woody's nightmare was in the original was similiar to this movie's sequence showing how Andy thought Woody was uncool compaired to Buzz cuz he didn't glow in the dark, then were thrown in the trash can and being swarmed by cockroaches. A yard sale sequence were planned for the original but reused for this film.

Fun fact: WOODY WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A VILLAN A BAD GUY IN THE 1ST MOVIE, he would be the bad one and make bad things with Buzz like a bad guy... in the end they made him just jealous and selfish about buzz but, I actually liked the idea of woody be mean I guess this movie had everyone wondering if their toys gained lives when they werent arround LOL like me, sometimes I'm like "bruh if my toys are alive?"
