Toy Physics--Ramp Walker ///Homemade Science with Bruce Yeany

Ғылым және технология

Ramp walkers are cool toys that "walk" down ramps or in some case are pulled along a flat table by a weight on a string hanging over the edge of a table. Ramp walkers can have 1,2, or 4 moving legs and in some cases have additional moving parts. These two walkers are the first of a series of larger walker built primarily for my amusement.
Homemade science is a collection of classroom tested ideas, suggestions, projects, and experiments that I have used in teaching physical science for the Annville-Cleona school district in central Pennsylvania. I am currently in my 38th year of teaching. My intention is to share these ideas with other teachers or anyone who has an interest in science. I have found that designing and building my own equipment has taught me more than any course that I have ever taken. I hope that you consider trying this for yourself.. I also share and show some of these ideas at workshops, science conferences, or inservice presentations.

Do you still read this? I only now discovered your channel and absolutely love it. Thank you so much for sharing all those knowledge and fun experiments and so much more! Are those plans still available? I would love to build these. How does one identify the center of gravity where the pivot has to be (I guess)?

Hi Bruce, what a great video! The ramp walkers bring back childhood memories. Unfortunately they are not available in Germany and I would like to build one myself. Could you please send me the plans? That would be so nice! Greetings from Germany, Ulrich

The physics principle here is the *pendulum*, with an added escapement mechanism. It is essentially an inverted linear version of a grandfather clockwork type device.

Hello Bruce, Congratulations for your walker animals, it´s exciting to see them walk by themselves, and I would love to try all of them for a nearest future for my just brand new nephew, he is still 7 months, but i´m sure he is going to appreciate them :-) I´d love if you were so kind and send me the patterns of all of them....but if you don´t want to send them all, I´ll very happy at least with the chicken or duck. Thank you and take care.

This is an area of "scientific toys" which every one loves, ramp walkers front back and side movements, level walkers when pulled, rope climbers with two ropes and a single rope where " friction clutches " need to be used. I must say that the finishing of these scientific exhibits are better than mine as they include great artistic features while mine are purely scientific and only relate the mass to the point of contact. Such projects train the students in language use art, mathematics, mechanics, all physics and science and if the students are allowed to do it craft and design is also in it. Perhaps there is some benefit in allowing students to do their own design which need to include the science, but the art and the language is left to the imagination of the student. This joint efforts in subject may eventually teach students that there is everything in all we do and we cannot separate, art, languages, sport, science, religions, physics, and social work as they are all incorporated in all we do . This is something that all schools should establish once and for all. Well done Mr Yeany.

Hi Bruce.Great video. Im also working on this toy. But instead of using wood, Im using a 3-D printer to design the toy. Plastic weighs much lighter than wood, and my design is much smaller than yours. Can you help me out?

fila zaum Hi Fila, I can send you information on the rabbit and and two other ramp walkers. As for the duck, I had a small wooden one that was broken so I took it apart made drawings of the parts and enlarged them on a photocopier to make it. I loaned out the pictures to someone and they were never returned. I would be happy to share what I have, to do so I would need and email address to send it to, either in this comments section or privately. Bruce
