This situation is so sad. Especially being from Florida. I cant believe what we're seeing man. The beach used to be my favorite place to go. We cant even go and enjoy it no more. The beaches are Florida .. I wish this would stop

Hi Amy.The video explains how Lake O's natural current flows and thermoclines have been disrupted , by loss of floating vegetation , side bank vegetation and sub surface vegetation all been insufficient. Researches show how L-Serine helps prevent Alzheimer’s disease and the lack of serine because of blue green algae! Google it! We all should buy L-Serine.

It’s really not that complicated. Open your google maps and look what is south of the lake. It’s farm land. You can obviously see the natural flow of the lake. Get rid of the farm land that should never been aloud to be there. The flow of water needs to be slowed down so the grass can filter the water. Also change the Kissimmee river back to its natural state. The original river was significantly longer. Which slowed the water.

I'm sure the multiplicity of plastic particulates is further perpetuating the problem.

Good documentary, I have just started my graduate school and learning about these phenomena. Really sad to see such incidents are increasing.

It’s CRIMINAL!!! Hold these big agricultural business, developers and politicians responsible. This travesty is caused by a few greedy and reckless individuals. “Money is the root of evil!” Hit them where it hurts, their wallets. Protest and boycott these industries and start with community and environmental lawsuits for immediate restitution/cleanup costs, and eventually, the long term adverse health and economic/business effects.

OMG I knew it, I knew it! The macro problem is 6 million additional people moved into Florida in the last 28 years to live, farm, and enjoy the good life (like I did) but the state's waters just can't absorb the nutrients from whatever sources from that much "growth".(nitrogen from cars and nit./phosphorous from farms and big sugar and sewage effluent and lawns and golf courses and on and on. . . ). Do away with septic tanks in FL. Also,severely limit the amount of grass lawns..tax it. Shut down the sugar industry. Big tax on fertilizers, and chemicals.

I have a simple question. Why are they talking about extracting phosphorus etc from the effluent before sending it to the lake and south to the everglades? Marsh areas are natures most effective filters - far more efficient than extracting pollutants by any other means. The logical solution would seem to be to simply divert the bulk of the water to the everglades and let nature do the cleaning before discharging anything to the oceans. Localized human cause contamination due to leaking (flooded) septic systems is another issue - chances are that rising sea levels will address that problem over the next 100 years as much of this land will become flooded..

Bio diesel I think can be made from it. Here in Toledo we deal with it all the time from lake Erie and it makes our water undrinkable. They need to develop a filter for the microcystin and harvest the algae for fuel! Also cut certain ratios in NPK fertilizers up stream.

They have disabled comments on other videos on youtube on this subject. Let us hear from those that have been effected health wise. No information about the people is being brought forth.

We are living the nightmare from algae.

The Indian River Lagoon system contains at least 60 species of microalgae that have been shown to be harmful to humans or marine life elsewhere. Nearly 10 of these have negatively affected marine life in the IRL; at least three have caused human illness in the IRL. All 60+ are waiting for the right combination of light, temperature and nutrients to bloom, just as the cyanobacteria Microcystis did in 2016.

My wife is almost a full 9 months pregnant and we are living on a sailboat in the algae. Not good!

All the groups, charities, gov orgs and cults raise money , say they are working to solve water issues and yet, nothing changes, so the eco move is silenced by tourism, fishing industry, so as to not chase the tax base away so they run around , do their studies and nothing changes, we will pay this price in our health and of our children

Also,the Nitrogen ,because its a gas it gets out of the lake into the atmosphere but phosphorus ,dont leaves the lake.Alagal blooms are caused ONLY because of phosphates.Because the algae that you see on the surface of the lake feeds only with phosphates from the water and takes the Nitrogen directly from air( they can split the NO2 like bacteria does ).

Restore the natural flow south. No other answer.

Kidnap our state politicians and people whose homes were built where homes should never have been built. Put them on buses with a bathing suit provided for each one. Drive these busses to the Red/Green/Blue algae infected waters and give them a choice, wake up and deal with the reality or have a nice swim!

There was a petition to White House on August. But unfortunately it reached only 88,000 signs instead of 100,000. Maybe we should keep on trying and create another one?

In 1999 it was established that this type of algae could be converted into Bio-fuel. It was estimated at that time to cost between 1.3 to 2.5 Billion and was put on the back burner, because of Big Oil! We have voted 3 times to purchase the sugar fields and return the filtration of Lake Okeechobee back to the Everglades. Each time the money was funneled to other projects. During Rick Scott's governorship, the funds have been used on lawyer fee's to fight the water rights against Georgia. Big Sugar is a huge contributor to the Republican Party, and with a Republican governor, nothing has been done. Vote this November for a Democratic Congress, and give the EPA the power it use to have! Once Florida Loses its beautiful Beaches on both Coasts, and is no longer a Tourist attraction. It will cost Trillions to bring it back if at all!
