Towing the Tiger 2 - King Tiger 104
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Towing the Tank Museums King Tiger back into the museum after a brief stay in the workshop area.
Tiger 104 is the UK's only Henschel-turreted King Tiger. It was recovered from Aux Marais near Beauvais, France by British Royal Engineers in January 1945 after it was abandoned by it's crew following suspension damage and ultimately a broken drive-shaft.
The tow vehicle in this clip is a Chieftain Armoured Recovery Vehicle.

Nah, there are better looking tanks. Look at the leopard 2, for example

can you imagine the horror&adrenaline allied tank crews felt seeing Tiger on the field 😬

The psychological impact was great. It is why after battle action reports were loaded with Tiger sightings, when in fact many of the tanks faced were Pz. IV and Panthers.
It's great to see them taking the old girl out for a walk every now and then :)
lots of scratches on the roads!! Thx for the upload!
I should have one of this monster to clear my path when going to work on the morning !
please restore this vehicle...It's a rare and awesome part of world history...Don't let it rot away

l would guess the reason for not restoring this beast is the cost (a few million maybe) and parts, but yes it would be nice to have it running. Atleast it won't have to travel far so reliability won't be a problem, when l stood next to it l was shocked how big it was.

Bovington will restore it eventually, they have a cue of others first.

@@kevfinn8232 no it can restoration but not have engine they can make an new one but its useless
That was a good bit of driving, hard enough to thread one massive tank though that space but to tow and reeves a King Tiger as well. Top man.
Still awesome! Look how hard the Chieftain CRV does his job.
That must've been extremely intimidating to see on the battlefield.
Superb. It really was ahead of its time. And almost ahead of its technology......
what a great vid, thanks for posting

Hello 👋
The king tiger could do a full rotation of it's turret in 10 seconds, last i checked that's still fairly decent even today.
very beatuiful tank!
It remains a wonderful piece of engineering. I think they're beautiful. One day, I'll get to come see it.

Did you see it
Very beautiful machine.
The Legend Lives :)
sensational stuff
imagine if you were just driving to work and the next thing you see is that
Don't you just love that sound of the tiger...

Sorry NO it hasnt got a engine
Beatiful machine,great!
It's called 'Zemerit' paste, it was applied after the tank was finished. It makes it harder for magnetic mines/grenades to attach to the steel hull, as it attaches to less surface(the grooves) on a vibrating tank
lovely engine and tank
Yes, great vid.. nice 'parking' in the museum....
What a beauty..makes you to want go start building a model just looking at it...
Its good to know that, thanx
that is a big frickin tank!
Predator of steel, a beast!
Missing a few road wheels...but still a beauty!!
Full credit to the tank that towed it. I would have thought it would have taken a D10 Bulldozer to tow that monster!!!!!
Considering the weight of each projectile of the ML-20S is between 43 and almost 49 kilos, the kinetic energy itself was enough to at the very least deliver concussions to the crew. While the frontal armor of the KT would not always be penetrated by the shells, the impacts did crack the welds. The stress to any attached equipment, the transmission (which is in the front, remember?) and the suspension was enough to immobilize or eliminate the KT from further fighting.
It is called Zimmermitt and is a paste applied to keep magnetic mines and anti-tank grenades from sticking to the side of the tank.
doddy mate your right..this tanks engine was used to make the TIGER Mk1 the RAC museum has run again...(that engine was cut up back in 1942 so the REME could see how it worked)
My uncle run into a few of those @ St Vith. He didn't hang around to long to take pictures!!!!
@TigerIPanzer great point i was just saying that about the tiger 1. the king tiger so rare. and what a tank .The size is mind bogling . how did they expect to get around in such a big heavy tank. sinking in the mud bridges had to be renforced or bult new from scratch. but on the russian step is where this tank would shine
I simply have to get to the Bovington museum before I die, I don't think there's any other better tank museum in the world.
It's crushing the hell out of that pavement! COOL!
what a beast
The world's best tank today is the British Challenger 2. It is the only tank to have Chobham 2 armour, the Leo 11 and Abrams still have Chobham 1. The only Challenger lost in action was destroyed by a another Challenger in a friendly fire incident in the last Gulf War
this video is priceless for a 3D tank modeler like me!!!
that thing's armour can put a modern tank to shame thickness wise
100% Agree with you!
@mjeshaw Good point. Firing on the move was indeed attempted. Hitting on the move was almost uniquely a US tank capability.
And I too have lots of books, and the right ones too like the one I mentioned, it's a reference book for military historians, and written by Thomas Jentz and Hilary Doyle. The Front Hull armour (Glacis Plate) is 150mm thick while the turret front is 180mm =D
I agree 100%. Shot through the lungs.
grand daddy of all tanks
yeah your spot on
かっこいい!nice!
@MegaLiopleurodon You had right. He`s in "Full" in the Festungsmuseum Reuenthal. A small town near Waldshut/Germany (over the Rhein). Greetings
Best tank ever!!!!
@TigerIPanzer Fire on the move was a post war concept for everyone but US. US M-3, M-4, M-5, M-24, M-26 all had gun stabilization systems.
Zuljan, Ralph. "M36 Tank Destroyer." Second World War Armor. 16 Mar 2000 A pair of M36s engaged at 700m one destroying the King tiger with a Turret hit, the other thru the tracks
Panzer, you can tell by the frontal armor and the Riding wheels.
BEAST
thumbs up for the best tank in ww2 if this was about in 1940 what a different story would be told today.
lovely to see the german tank moving
Whats the likelyhood of getting this one up and running ?? keep up the good work Bovie ....
that is a big tank. kudos to german designers for size and epicness.
@TigerIPanzer I love the design of the Jagdpanther too

WTD 41, Jagdpanther from Deutsches PanzerMuseum, Munster ... look it up
@TheCraftedMine I think they made one , but not fully operational , its in Kubinka museum
well i think i speak for everyone when i say this the king tiger is a beast and always will be
Zimmerit Coating Nice tank :)
I would imagine that Chieftain ARV is kept pretty busy at the museum.
is it poossible a complete restore of the tank? engine, electrical systems...?
@berkut2006 : No, the turret was being rotated by hand in the video - the tank has no engine. Using power take-off from the engine the turret could be rotated 360 degrees in about 10 seconds; very fast for WW2.
well done brittisch
Ja, always mit der kaput driveshafts und transmissions. Phhrrttt. Tanks Uncle Adolf.
Oh wait. Nice profile picture. That explains a lot.
A very expansive tank, it cost 800000 marks at the time, which equated to 15 million dollars today.
My god what a monstrosity of a machine.... O.o
Sorge sich nicht. Wir lieben es..
@ledwinkaUK Well it was as fast or faster than most medium tanks at the time.. It was not more prone to breaking down than any other German tank, its armour was impenetrable so no problem with silhouette. "Vertical" armour is not a problem, and certainly was not on the Tiger II. All tanks, even modern, are vulnerable from side/rear/top.
where says that m36 penetrated kingtiger? give me a link!
It was like the grandson draggin the grandpa to the playground :D
yeah true still nothing beats a main battle tank
Que belleza de tanque
my pleasure
@1000RRboyJay The sound is from the towing tank.
The one escaping reappeared in Berlin a few days later knocking out more than 30 tanks, many IS tanks. The KT eventually managed to escape Berlin and the crew burned the tank at the outskirts of the city, and continued on foot to the northwest. Anyhow this story (verified by many sources according to book) makes me doubt the stories of T34:s knocking out several KT:s.
@USExceptionalism I was talking about the Tigers intended role on the Soviet front. The Sherman was the most numerous tank there. I was merely saying that it was not the Tigers speed (either itself or the turret) that killed it, it was the fact that it was in the wrong place at the wrong time. In a position where it did not matter what tank it was (but the Tiger did survive better obviously..)
@alfredthebong on which germany are you on sir in the federal or in the democratic?
No it is 150mm, check out T.Jentz's Tiger Tanks "VK45.02 to Tiger II" book.
So, whats the status on the engine? i.e, are you restoring it, has it been destroyed....
Where is this tank now???
I always thought the Henschel turret was one with a curve at the front?
@TigerIPanzer Sometimes. M-3s were mostly out of service by the time the Tiger came out. The Tigers were mostly out of service by the time the M-26 came out, though there is a story about one that shot a Tiger across a river, but it may have been a Panther given the propensity of soldiers to mis-identify. Tiger and Panther had a bad reputation for reliability even among the German soldiers who were not spoiled by Detroit products.
1:05 this is maximum speed of how fast he can rotate hes turet?
what motor mounted?
Hmmm...it's missing some of the road wheels on the right side. Wonder if they could replace them from a canibalized KT remnant. Then again, I suppose the replacement wheels would have a different serial number and some purists would not want to mix and match parts from multiple tanks just to have a complete specimen. Is this possible?
@TigerIPanzer the bits adopted the fireonthemove philosophy prior to ww2. but it was not very efective because of the need to have highly train gunners, which were expensive and time-costing to produce
yes, compare a medium tank to a heavy one, thats good point of view ...
Tiger was slow moving and not that maneuverable but psychologically it was a terror....
The M4 Sherman was never meant to be a heavy-hitter, it was meant to be agile and able to take on smaller vehicles while keeping a descent speed. The U.S. was able to make thousands of Shermans while the Germans could only make a few hundred to around a thousand during the war. You can have all of the firepower you want but when you get surrounded, it all breaks down.
very squeeky but a great peice of history :D
Not that this debate isnt..interesting, but, back to the video. Whatever is pulling the King Tiger or Tiger II.. is doing bloody well. Its own weight plus the Tiger..phew!!
"Shot #35. Target: turret front. Shell: 122 mm AP flat type. Propellant: reduced. Distance: 3400 m. Result: a dent 200 mm by 230 mm, 90 mm deep. The rear side of the armour had a bump with cracks. The wending seam between the turret front and the bracing strut has a 200 mm crack." And so on.
This tank had a good 88mm and good armor but its engine was to bad to drive 70 ton steel. And the transmission wasnt the best either. But its SOOOO Awesome!!
Those two shell impacts penertated thru into tank
link please.
What about the landkruser?
just out of interest, the camo job that is on here, is still original from when it was captured?
