Towing Doubles: Why Toyhaulers Are Overrated

In this video we go over some more of the tech behind how we trailer to trails and stay overnight. We don't use a toy hauler to do this, we tow doubles behind our short bed Ram Cummins instead.

    I’m in Idaho and do the same. I have a 34 ft bumper pull that’s 38 ft overall. With my 14 ft trailer and my truck I am 74 ft 8 inches long. Max length in Idaho is 75 ft. I am a commercial driver with over 2 million mile of experience pulling trailers so the length isn’t a problem. I can back it up better then most can back a single trailer.

    I have a dodge 3500 with a 28 ft bumper pull travel trailer. A few months ago I pulled my 18 ft pontoon boat 350 miles up to Arkansas. Although it pulled it fine I found it was real easy to get "tail wag" from the rear trailer. Any fast input on the steering wheel was amplified at the rear. Also, the suction effect from the semis on I-30 was pretty bad so I had to stay up on that wheel! Lol. My setup worked great at 55 mph. Theres a lot going on so you just have to be tuned in and plan your route and fuel stops out. Backing up is like pushing a rope! Lol To hook the rear trailer up I just get my wife to call me on video chat and points the camera towards the hitch! Perfect! PS: Brace yourself for all the haters, you're going to set their hair on fire!

  • @RedSandsAdventures

    That’s interesting, I wonder if a lot of that has to do with how the pontoon sits on the trailer. Most of them that I have seen sit pretty far above the axles. Your solution for back up and getting hitched is awesome! Video calling is a brilliant idea. Also I know there is a lot of people that get upset about double towing but my family has been doing it as long as I can remember without issue. Yes it takes a little more prep and planning but it works out really well in the end. Thanks for watching!

I lost the bumper, trailer and RZR AT 60mph going down I-45 luckily it all ended up in the median rightside up no damage. I'm lucky it didn't hit someone. I took it to a professional welder and he told me it was never attached to the camper frame correctly. It is now!!! Hoping you already had that checked. You didn't mention it in your video. I just feel like that gooseneck adapter makes for weird leverages that the tongue isn't designed for. There are several videos on here of bent campers because of this. But if its working for you, have fun, just keep watching for fatigue cracks and don't assume that the max weight ratings still apply. That said, I am working on my own double tow setup and its great to see how someone else has done it.

  • @RedSandsAdventures

    That’s a good point, the lower leverage point of the gooseneck adapter probably stresses the pinbox a little bit more. I do check it pretty often though just to be sure. That’s awesome that you are working on your own setup. My family loves pulling doubles(all my brothers and my dad have similar setups) and I feel like a lot of people are scared of it. Now I am retired and we like the TH because 3 axles a n d all that storage and shop room. I won't be on the road without 3 ton floor jack, air compressor, fast charge battery charger and my tools. Guns and sporting equipment. I also carry a wood Ada ramp for my wife in back when moving. Also a side by side refrigerator for fish and pheasants and good S Dakota beef. Glad to see another double puller. I have been doing this for quite a few years. Its all about setup and the second trailer not being too tongue heavy or light. My current setup is a 35' toyhauler and 12' single axle trailer. We do mostly dry camping and have yet to put the sxs inside our new toyhauler, it's nice to have it all setup inside and not have the ramp down to bring in all the dust and dirt when loading. Can you explain the 2nd trailer braking wiring again? It's just a wire from the first trailer brakes to the plug in the back? Does this make adjusting brakes difficult?

  • @RedSandsAdventures

    @RedSandsAdventures

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah buddy, I have to set the rzr back a bit to get the tongue weight on the bumper to around 150 lbs and that seems to do well. As far as the trailer brakes, the camp trailer brakes are wired the same way as they came from the factory as a series. I just added a “separate” circuit from where the 7 wire comes into the pin box all the way back to the plug at the rear of the camp trailer and that circuit comes back to ground at the pin box on its own. Hopefully that explains it well enough. As far as braking goes, it’s actually very easy to adjust I literally just turn up the controller from 4 to 5 when I have the tag trailer and everything behaves . Maybe I’ll need to make a video showing the wiring setup. Thanks for watching

    I live in Maine, I have a Class A commercial drive’s license with double and triple endorsements and to the best of my knowledge it would be legal here to pull the double on the interstate but NOT on the local roads. So you would need to drop a trailer @ a park and ride lot right off the highway. And that doesn’t really make sense to me because of the control issues he spoke of when being passed by a semi of another large vehicle. Seems the lower speeds of local roads would be safer for a nonprofessional driver (not that some of them aren’t better the some pros).

    @@RedSandsAdventures not really. Double towing can be tricky. An RV was not designed for dbl tow and from what I have seen on the road many dbl tow RV drivers are always on the edge. Some are actually over length also. Remember it was not too long ago that DT was illegal for commercial drivers east of the Mississippi. DT for RV is still illegal in much of the northeast. It's about safety not regulation or government interference.

    Every government regulation comes under the guise of safety. I’ve found that everyone is for freedom up to the edge of their own interests and not an inch further. Thank you for your input but i don’t think we will agree on this one. Drive safe
