TOWERED Airport Touch and Go Lesson | Complete Lesson WITH Instruction (Hagen's 6th Lesson)

This is a real flight lesson at a towered airfield in class c airspace! I am teaching Hagen how to talk on the radios with ATC and I'm explaining all the equipment he needs to have to enter the airspace. In this lesson, we're going to be doing touch and goes at a larger airfield in a Piper Cherokee 140! This is Hagen's sixth lesson! In this video, Hagen is learning some of the private Pilot maneuvers and how to land a Piper Cherokee 140.

    im restarting my ppl training soon. I had 17.5 hours prior to covid in a 172. the school I want to attend use piper warriors. I hope its an easy adjustment from 172s. I can’t wait to get started. I love your teaching style snd videos.

    I really appreciate that! Unfortunately, im not going to be able to finish the series with Hagen since I’ll be moving, but I intend on continuing this series with some other students. Im trying to coordinate with a fellow instructor that will hopefully film the rest of his training so you guys can follow Hagen’s progress

    After doing all my lessons on grass and a non towered 2800' airport I'll never my first impression of the 10,000' monster my instructor took me to. Even had an anxious 727 captain behind us while on short final. Approach and tower controllers were great.

    I first started taking lessons at Del Rio airport DRT and that was an uncontrolled field. It sits right on the Rio Grande river so if you made a right crosswind to downwind from Rwy 13 too wide over the River you could easily be considered as an international flight. My next location was Korea and that was my first towered airport at Osan Air Force Base. We had to contact ground control to request engine start and then again when we were ready, to taxi to the runway. After that we would contact tower for takeoff. The first cross country was to a airbase that was made by Korean air, traffic controllers and that was interesting with the language barrier. It was so fun.

    Del Rio! Too funny. I had a few friends go down there for pilot training. It’s funny, only the military wants to clear you to start engines. I don’t get that. Lol

    @@FreePilotTraining that’s where I was stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base, which was a pilot training center back in the day when they had T-37’s and T-38’s. Military gave you permission to start engines because they own the airplanes. By the way, my first aircraft when I took my very first lesson was in a T-41 which was the Air Force is version of the Cessna 172. It had 40° flaps and no panel lighting. The VOR‘s in there actually had a blue and yellow sector at the bottom of the instrument. It didn’t have a coordinator. It had a turn slip indicator. HSI was non existent. ADF was fun to use.

    stumbled on this video while stuck in the nebulous of GA training vids - absolutely fantastic vid. I start training next month, clearly a channel worth binging. Never flown a single hour, but during the simulated engine out, why go straight from engine out to land? As opposed to engine out, try to restart the engine, and then land when that failed. That just struck me odd. If you’re driving and your car stalls out, you turn the key to turn it back on, not find the nearest parking lot.

    Thanks Colin! Glad to have you on the channel! That’s an excellent question…it may seem like we are NOT trying to start the engine back up, but we actually are. The first two steps are to Pitch for the Proper Airspeed, then choose the Best landing spot. Then comes the checklist. During this part, we are making sure the airplane is in the proper configuration so it will restart. If the propeller is still spinning and you correct an issue, the engine should restart. For example, if I had accidentally pulled the mixture out too far and killed the engine, pushing it back in will restart the engine. If you check everything and it’s all good, but she won’t restart, start planning to make an emergency landing

    Assuming you had students fly the pattern first, It might be helpful to tell them on a power off stall to pretend like they are on short final. For some reason I could fly the pattern really well but out in the maneuvering area was often confused when told to do a power off stall.

    The airport I’m training at is in busy class C airspace. I have experience talking on radios from the military and my job so I started making the calls on my first flight. I’m still not perfect, sometimes I miss an instruction on read-back or mess up a call, but I think it is a benefit to have a background talking on the radio and to fly out of a busy controlled airport.

    Just a thought. When I’m told there’s traffic and I don’t see them they understand that I’m looking. So I give him either in sight or negative contact. If it’s a Military tower, I say tally ho and check six.

    So does the garmin gps route you around airspace you’re not allowed in or is that something you must figure out when doing your flight plan?

    You could set it up do go around, but that’s way too much work. The GPS displays the airspace, you can just go around it pretty easily
