Tower Speaker Comparison - Polk, Definitive, Kef, Paradigm, Bowers, Focal, Monitor | 8 inch Woofers

Музыка

This video is a review of Tower speakers in the $1100 or less price point, per speaker, in July 2021. These Floor standing speakers have dual 8 inch woofer and dual 6.5 inch as well. Some have 150 watt and 300 watt subwoofers built in. These are speakers for Music and some great for movies as well.
Polk Audio R700 Reserve Series
Definitive Technology BP 9020, 9040 and 9060
Paradigm SE 8000F
Monitor Audio Bronze
Focal Chora 826
Kef Q950
Bowers and Wilkins 603 S2 Anniversary Edition
Definitive BP 7006(not 7006)
I intended to put SVS Ultra Tower in the Mix. The SVS has slightly better midrange than most of the speakers. The SVS tweeter sound is close to the rest. Not quite as sharp as the Definitive Technology towers....closer to Polk Audios. If you would like me to consider reviewing your product please send a email to OldTradesAudio@Hotmail.com. There is an old saying, when buying speakers, buy the ones that smashes it in the mids and highs. You can add bass easily but not mids and highs, definitely cant change dispersion and directivity characteristics. In this case, the Focal is the one to get.

Agree but then again, buy some good bookshelves instead of a big floorstander that doesn't do bass. I think the R700 is amazing and the focal is bright. So short term it might sound better but it's just too bright and fatiguing.

Is there really an old saying like that? Besides my doubts about that old saying, I agree that the Focals with a sub is the best choice, or for just allround teenage bashing - Polks might be the best choise.

Good comparison. I have some older paradigm towers with a bipolar array. They were built to compete with the Def Techs in the early 90s. 6.5inch woofers and a 1 inch aluminum tweeter on the front and back. They still sound phenomenal and present a wide and clear sound stage. High hats sound amazing. I'm consistently shocked by their low end extension. They do extremely well under 40hz. I pick up details consistently in the 20 to 35hz range. I wouldn't hesitate to use speakers with the bipolar design again as my main set of towers. Considering newer def tech towers as an upgrade at some point. Pulling them off the wall a foot or so is a good call too. Coincidentally, I just moved mine out. After a couple years of living and cleaning, they had made their way closer to the wall. Sound is significantly better with them back where they should be.

Like 15 years ago, or whatever its been now that I purchased the Old Definitive Techs(amps still have not broke). I thought the same as you. But then after looking back on my history with a JVC, Yamaha, and Pioneer receivers amps going....A Polk Audio and Klipsch Sub amp going (both were in warranty) ......another polk and acoustic research sub breaking (both out of warranty). And some other equipment I cant rememberhaha. Amps going is part of the game. I love the sound of the 9060 towers, and if the amps go after warranty I can either fix them or then add a sub to each and still enjoy the bipolar sound.

Informative video. I’m in the market for tower speaks and an avr for my bedroom so I’m going through a lot of your videos again. I’m looking for two channel only and basically surround sound or center channel additions aren’t important to me. My goal is to maximize music listening quality and just want the ability to run my tv and Uhd Blu-ray player and ps5 through the speakers. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories of issues with arc/earc which is why I’m going the avr receiver route instead of an integrated amp with arc/earc support. You mentioned the focal 826 being weak on bass. Is that from a movie cinema standpoint or for music as well? I want good bass performance as I will be listening to industrial, hard rock and electronic music primarily in this space and don’t want to add a sun. The focals are on sale now for 699.00 so it would be a really good deal.

Interesting review, thanks for doing it all of us. I was kind of hoping you were going to compare the SVS Ultra to the others, especially the Focal because you liked that one for music. I have a pair of JBL L7s I bought 30 years ago and the tweeters have now fried, and have wave patterns in the foam surrounds. I listen to mostly music, and mostly classic rock, but do touch into some light metal, and jazz. I have a 400 watt Klipsch 12" subwoofer, and run a Harmon Kardon PA2200 amp that puts out 100 watts per channel. What would you suggest with my current setup and listening habits?

Thanks for the recommendation on the def tech 9060s, would you recommend the Atmos add-on for those? I'm building my first home theater and don't want to buy an amp. I was thinking of getting 4 9060s with the Atmos add-on. What center channel speaker do you recommend for mostly movies. I noticed you're really not a fan of any of the def tech centers. Please let me know which would be best.

Thanks for watching. The 9060s are fantastic. The Atmos add on is ok, but like most of those add ons that fire toward the ceiling, it may or may not produce good results. I did notice that the lower volume sounds that come out of the top mount atmos speakers tend to get lost. Vs if you can mount speakers high on the wall or put some on top of a 6ft high bookshelf (better choices). kzread.info/dash/bejne/qmymxsR6canIdNI.html If not using amps try to get the highest power receiver 125 watt x 2 into 8 ohms, or a receiver that guarantees the power like, Marantz, x 5 or more channels. Also make sure the receiver has pre-amp outputs for added flexibility of adding a future amp (sometimes we change our minds) . Speakers sound different with 90 watts vs 150. I settled on the SVS Ultra center. It has clear vocals and a strong sound stage and impact, Blends well with the 9060s

@@OldtradesReviews thank you for your honesty and advice. I have the Denon 4300 which is 125 watts per channel. I'll add svs ultra center to my list for center. I want the best front stage I can get for the money. Have you heard the Klipsch RC 64III yet if so what are you thoughts? Would svs ultra towers be better than def tech? Which height speakers do you recommended? Which rears do you recommend?

  • @OldtradesReviews

That Denon is a good one and can be expanded upon with the preamp outs. My ears and horn tweeters do not mix. I have found them to harsh, but have tried a few Klipsch over the years. Never worked out. Also the horn tweeters can be very angle specific...needing to be toed in just right. That peticular one with 4, 6 inch woofers would need a amp. SVS towers would be different. You would lose the 9060 bipolar rear drivers that make for a wide deep front soundstage, also the 300 watt amp to the 10 inch woofers. So in my opinion any other speaker that is non powered would need a amp. The Denon may be putting out 70 watts a channel when its in multichannel mode. The more speakers it needs to power the less they will get. Tell me more about the setup. Will it be 7.1.2? 5.1.4? That will change the surround and height speaker recommendations. 7.1 is always better to build off than 5.1

@@OldtradesReviews You make really good points about the speakers and will stick with the 9060s. Did you experience the pop issue people complained about? goal is to build a mean 5.2.4 setup that will last. I've read to save up and put most of the funds towards great speakers since they last the longest and tech doesn't change that often over time. Subs: I'm leaning towards the new monoprice 13 thx If I do get an amp down the road it will be the monoprice amp probably Content: movies/tv shows(Netflix and Plex) later on once gpy prices FINALLY drop I'll build a new Plex server in house for 4k blu-ray movie streaming

All of these speakers have internal xover components that leave a lot to be desired. Cheap xover components make the companies the higher margins. Even adding a small sonicap in parallel with the stock caps will improve them, but you get what you pay for.

Magnolia cannot sell even Klipsch RP-8000F II speakers ( at least in the two locations I visited.. in Los Angeles! I asked explicitly! 12/2023) They cannot even order them... Magnolia used to be a place that could hook you up with anything you asked.. but they have seriously degraded.. Sadly, the only non-in-store places that offer great sound and options in Los Angeles to day seems to be Crutchfield or Amazon! You simply cannot enter a store and hear anything of any substance anymore, in a place that sells quality Speakers... so sad! So... You buy,, and return.. buy... and return... Blind testing speakers are way different than blind testing power amps and dacs. There is nothing to fail in a speaker blind test, its a matter of preference as ALL speakers are not the same, objectively and subjectively. Harman has shown that speakers with wide directivity get chosen more over ones with narrower directivity, hence why all Revel speakers have wide directivity pattern. Majority prefer sound with lots of lateral reflections. In this bunch, the Focals have that exact same characteristic, it holds 60 degrees all the way up to 11khz, in comparison the R700 starts dropping off like a rock at 5500hz at 50 degrees. There is no right or wrong, just preference.

What amps do you prefer? I agree not the full potential. That would require 150-300 watt amps and many different brands as each manufactures will have its own tonal qualities. With that said the 120/125 watt power from 2 different brands, the speakers received is more than most people will feed them. Which makes the test great for the mainstream customer.

@@OldtradesReviews Amp and speaker match is very important. Receivers do not do the justice to quality speakers , these floorstanders love power , you could experiment with NAD or Rotel for easy to buy amp but if you try more polished and high performance amps from say John Hillig at Musical Concepts /Musical Design you will hear how much more control, drive at low distortion along with wonderful soundstage and amazing harmonics and details some of these can reproduce. John sells some of his moded amps with his PA7 control boards and MOSFET transistors can be bought for around 1200usd , it is a steal of an amp, true high end at low fi price. Than good Preamp , DAC and transport either streamer like Ifi Zen or quality CD transport will all make a difference. It would be totally different soundscape over the receivers ...
