Located in the desert of northern Arizona near Winslow is Meteor Crater. This 50,000 year old crater is relatively young in terms of Earth's many craters. The impact that likely wiped out dinosaurs was long in the past when an estimated 160 foot meteorite collided with our planet. It wouldn't be until the 19th century that this crater would gain the attention of settlers and scientists.
The name of the crater went through several changes over time. Originally it was named Canyon Diablo Crater after the nearby canyon and community. It was originally thought to be the result of volcanic activity from a nearby volcanic field. It wouldn't be until later in 1903 that Daniel Barringer presented the idea that a meteorite impacted Earth and caused the crater. He staked a claim on the land and began investigating for years, drilling in an attempt to locate the remains of a meteorite. It wouldn't be until the 1960s when Eugene Shoemaker discovered evidence that the crater was formed by high temperatures following an impact. As such, the crater is known today by scientists as the Barringer Crater and Meteor Crater to tourists.
Within the museum are a number of exhibits explaining the composition of meteors, examples of rock that have been impacted, information about notable meteor strikes through time, plenty of informational films, and hands-on displays.
Outside the museum are a number of paved pathways leading to various lookouts with telescopes fixed at points of interest. These paths are not considered ADA accessible as they are at an incline and have a number of small steps.
Inside the complex is the Blasted Bistro which offers sandwiches, soups, salads, smoothies and other treats. In addition is a large gift shop filled with various t-shirts, toys and items crafted from minerals.

In December of 2029, I flew from Grand Junction, CO down to Phoenix/Mesa Gateway airport. I just happened to look out the window at the right time and saw the crater, an awesome experience. I still want to see if from the ground. I could pick out the SF Peaks also. Thanks for this beautiful video and music.

Thank you for sharing the video. For the past 7 years I watch a lot of meteor documentary on KZread and other streaming media but they never mention about the museum at the crater in Arizona. So after looking on the Google map for the crater in Arizona I notice the Touring Meteor Space Museum at the edge of the crater on the map. I didn't think there was a museum but glad they made one. I decided to look up on KZread for any tour so I came across your video. Your video was great! Thx for sharing. Hopefully someday I'll go even though I'm in Connecticut is a long way out.

The museum is small but certainly a great addition to the experience (especially if you can manage to keep yourself from peeking at the crater beforehand. Hope you get an opportunity to visit some day! 😄

@@CactusAtlas Actually, I was on a flight to Puerto Vallarta from Canada and just happened to glance out at exactly the right moment. I knew where we were because of seeing it in the movie "STARMAN" with Jeff Bridges

@@CactusAtlas if my memory serves me, it was mostly information stations and pictures. I don't think they had all the physical displays, video stations and interactive bits. Of course this was before LCD and touch screens, so I guess I won't hold it against them.

Thank you so much! Oh you have to stop next time you're out heading west on I-40! It's really doesn't take a long time to go through the museum. It's pretty small. If we're being honest, even that Thing roadside attraction we visited is larger. 😅
I was here in 2015 and loved it! I am going to Sedona AZ at the end of this month and am going to re-visit the crater, since I will pass right by it why not check it out again? good video man. Brings back some forgotten memories

Oh gosh. It's been a while since we went so the memory is a bit foggy to specifics. Using Google maps it seems the path to the telescopes is about 166 feet or so and maybe half that distance from them to the lower ramada. The path to the uppermost observation deck is the longest and steepest from what I recall. -Amy

If you've been that's not hard to imagine! Outside of the museum I doubt much has changed over the years. Heck... it's been pretty much the same since I (Amy) moved here nearly a decade ago. 😅 Always fun to see it as it just doesn't fail to impress!

It's a pretty quick stop really. If you're in the area again you'll have to give it a visit. It's really worth it! The sad thing is that no matter what one uses to film or photograph... I'm not sure one can ever really get the feel of how large the crater is.

Unfortunately wind is one of those things that's hard to really say when is better. As for heat, late fall to early Spring avoids the hotter months though it can get cold on occasion.
