To anyone balking at pricing discussion, I (a regular old 33 year old working individual) was just quoted $70,000 to redo 2 bathrooms. No structural changes, some “higher end” finishes (aka basket weave floor, subway tile halfway up the walls). It’s just the reality of the construction industry nonsense now. Needless to say, thanks to watching people like MaCenna, I have come to the conclusion that I can do it completely wrong several times for that money and am going to give them a go myself. Let the girl speak! 🤣

Im so glad you are willing to bring up the numbers and realistic conversations about what renovating and building looks like. I was literally just talking to my husband today about the “forever house” we are dreaming up and how much it will cost to build, land, materials, where we can save, etc. Knowing how to build new (your extension) but make it have character (Im so excited for the second half of the cottage to get started and how you make it all cohesive), what are places to for sure just let the experts do it, vs DIY is totally worth it, etc is so helpful. If people don’t see how much you just enjoy building and decorating and curating a home, and sees your sharing information as a “flex” is not listening well. You are simply the living example in your research on the home construction experience. Don’t worry about it and know a lot of us are so thankful you are will to give us all the ins and outs as inspo. Love what you do!

I just want you to know that I genuinely APPRECIATE how honest you’ve been about the budgeting/cost of materials. I’ve been chronically poor my entire life lmfao 😂 (it’s okay we can have a giggle about it hahaha) BUT by real luck and good fortune, my cousin who I was renting off of decided to sell to me for an incredibly discounted price. Any time I talk about having my own home to other people around me my age, I feel bad bc it feels like I’m bragging when I’m just chatting or expressing how thankful I am. Everyone begins at different starting lines and it’s not any one individuals fault or job to feel bad about it. you’ve worked your behind off infront of us and before us and you’ve earned everything you have. Your education and "vote of confidence" you provide and validate us for is the best, and I actually built my own corner bench for my sun-room because you gave me the knowledge an confidence to do so, and I don't think I can say that of many other content creators and DIYers/builders. Thank you for what you provide for us!! People tend to gate-keep important/"exclusive" information and then when other people want to proceed with something similar like remodeling or buying a home, we're always fumbling for answers, and you give them!!

I haven't finished the video yet but I wanted to comment and say, yes, money *can* be a touchy subject but that's why we all need to talk about it more, to normalise and destigmatise those conversations. IMO: Yes, owning a house and doing renovations and having the money to fix things [without messing up your whole life] *is* a privilege. People maybe thought that I was privileged when I gutted and rennovated my house (I heard a lot of "OMG look at all that money you spent") but my privilege was that I inherited my house - and I'll be paying for these renovations for 35 years! 🤦🏾‍♀️ However(!) I think people who look at your privilege forget that this is your job and may be projecting onto you a little bit. You don't come across as braggy or preachy at all, more inspirational, if I'm honest. You built up to this moment by working bloody hard and it didn't all come to you in one fell swoop. - - Am I jealous of MaCenna and the privilege that comes with owning and renovating multiple homes? Sure. Can I be envious and happy for her at the same time? Hell yeah!

Money is touchy subject. I find myself amazed at what you all have at your age . 2 homes and the way you can shop is amazing. You are financially blessed ! I'm sure you worked hard for it and made wise decisions. I'm 43 and wish I could go back with the wisdom I have now to do the same.

I’m an avid watcher of your channel and a young adult figuring out life and I cannot express how inspiring it is to have someone be so real and express their worries, trials, and financial decisions in a time of unrelatable influencers. Thank you so much for what you do and I really hope you choose to post your podcast on budgeting! I really want to have a house similar to the cottage one day and would love to hear how much that cost you so I can begin saving up! You are an amazing person and should not feel bad expressing a culmination of your life’s journey (which includes finances) ❤❤

One of the things I appreciate MOST about your videos is that you DO share what the cost is. It really gives us a good idea about planning and where to place our priorities. Perfect case in point is when you told us how much money you were SAVING by building your own cabinets and cabinet doors for The Cottage-Not-By-The-Sea (just kidding - I thought the name was cute). And doing things like that allows you the opportunity to splurge here and there. I love how you show-and tell your hauls and tell us what you paid for them. Please don't stop doing that. Only insecure people will make negative comments about you sharing what things cost. We know you're just providing information, not showing off. I love your taste and all the knowledge you share with us. Oh, and as an afterthought, you said you did your podcast on budgeting because that seemed to be what people ask for the most. See??? People WANT to know. Let that encourage you to continue sharing with us.

I think that running KZread videos consistantly 2-4 times a week is one key to a strong online presence. The second would be working the output as a serious business. Full time dedication has driven the followers and algorithms up substantially. Strong financial base to work social media without holding a job, critical. Investment monies to purchase two homes. Makes sense to me. 😊

I absolutely love how genuine and intentional you are. It's such a joy to watch your content. You're living out a lot of what I wished for my life. I love your positivity and love for design and bringing beautiful antique pieces to life again either through your incredible ability and skills to design a piece of furniture or build an entire kitchen of cabinetry or repurpose/upcycle special vintage pieces. You're so talented and seem so sweet. I miss living in California so much, so I love seeing you having so much fun building such a beautiful home. I'd love hanging out with you and going to flee markets, antique malls and estate sales. I can't get anyone interested enough to do things like that with. So I definitely live vicariously through your adventures. I'll have to check out the LA flee markets next time I'm in California. ❤

Hi all, I bought a fixer upper last summer and let me tell you. Fixing a home is EXPENSIVE. EVEN IF you are buying everything builder grade, doing an entire house is not, I repeat, NOT cheap. And her giving us transparency is extremely, extremely helpful and educational for people going through it or thinking about going through it. You have to understand that until you’ve been through this, you have no concept of how much it will really cost. And you don’t have a concept of if you’re getting scr***d over or not until you have conversations with other people who did it too. Did I just get ripped off by this professional who only spent 30 minutes working on something in my home and charged me $650 for it, or it that normal for that skill and parts needed?!?! I DONT KNOW!!! She’s not sharing to show off. (Especially since she’s actually being really budget friendly. I know that people might try to argue against that when they look at her stove imported from Italy for example, but 50%+ of the cost of reno is in the labor, which she has done most of herself. So don’t be a prick! and let her splurge on a stove if she wants!) She’s sharing to help. And it is appreciated.

I think the front room could potentially be turned into a library? That large blank wall could house some built-in bookcases and you can move the gallery wall to the stair case wall. I can already see the walls painted moody, might as well since the room is dark with no direct sunlight. Imagine a nice, textured, statement seating piece like a chaise sofa!

That is such a beautiful home. I always get so sad seeing such beautiful estate sale homes.. it is obvious the lady who lived there put so much love and care and craftsmanship into her home and I bet she really cherished it. The idea of her lovingly choosing all of the items in her home and now strangers picking through them. Makes me sad.
