Tour Rothera Antarctic research station by drone

Ғылым және технология

Take a tour of Rothera research station - the UK's largest Antarctic station - by drone! This is a major centre for biological research and - with its runway suitable for Twin Otter and Dash-7 aircraft - a hub for deep-field research.
More than 100 science and support staff live and work at Rothera every austral summer, and around 20 staff spend the winter here.
Filmed in September 2016 by Matt Bell.

..... Very nice tour! I have been following the journeys of your research ship, the RRS Ernest Shackleton for the past 2 years, and I always enjoy her webcam views when they are docked in Port Stanley, or various points with icy, snowy and mountainous terrain around Antarctica. Looking forward to seeing her back down there in November!

Thank you for the weather history data link, 'Happy Citrus' (agent orange?) The temperature range for Sept 2016 @ BAS Station - Rothera - Antarctica, according to the stats on the timeanddate site, are recorded at being between +6 to -21oC. After looking at the wind data (speed/direction) it suggests that good weather flying for camera drones, would be Sept 6th am, 12th in pm, 15th in am, Sept 26th am/pm or perhaps Sept 5th (N/A no data?) Do you remember which day & time in Sept 2016 it was Drone Pilot - Mr Matt Bell? Was it logged in the Rothera tower's flight records book? And the winter path markers are? Perhaps, Domo Arigato to 'Happy Citrus' san, is more appropriate? Campi

Thank you for the reply, filmed in September 2016, Oscar Kilo. Nice & still & quiet & crispy, were you required to submit a low level flight plan to traffic control Matt? Are the over winter pathways marked with port & starboard flags/marker barrels?

Controlled drone piloting, with assistance of zero wind, makes for some great footage & helps with orientation of just how the station is laid out in relation to the coastline, runway & dock. Thanks. Interested to know which winter month this was & what the temps were that day?

You can view weather history for Rothera online. Here is one link. It looks like temperatures for September 2016 ranged from about -10 to 2 degrees Celsius. www.timeanddate.com/weather/antarctica/rothera-research-station/historic?month=9&year=2016
