I got to use one of those things in film school once! The thing that impressed me most about the Alexa lineup, was just how easy it was to use and operate them. All the settings, dials and buttons work so intuitively that I didn't have much of a problem finding everything I needed, even as a first time user. Arri utterly embarrasses RED when it comes to ease of use.

You know, I can only feel kinda anxious, when realizing, that with my health issues, and yearly wage of my family of $3000 (from 3 to 5, but usually it's 3), not only I can't afford even mid-range mirrorless, but also very basic stuff for filmaking, and I don't have any cinema clubs nor even acceptably good movie schools or something even remotely similar in my region, which is generally very poorly developed in terms of creative culture. I bought a6400, and now wanna sell it and buy X-T3, but I guess I'm not gonna be able switch to X-T3 soon. I'm 50\50 photo video shooter (but more video), and after more than a year of savings I initially bought Sony a6400, which is a great camera, but due to some tech issues (poor focus included, which is truly odd considering not that many people talked about it) and really annoying sensor dust attraction, it wasn't suitable for me. I was on hurry with my purchase, because at the time I needed to film an interview with elderly person, which had a lot of health issues, and could probably, you know, die. And due to possibility of that interview be the final moments of the life of that person, I wanted to film that in rather good quality etc. When a6400 launched it was ridiculously overpriced in my region, about $200 more compare to officially announced prices. The initial price was roughly 1/3 of yearly wage of our family, so it was pretty substantial purchase for me. Weeks after I filmed that interview Sony announces a huge discount on a6400, which was about $158. Some stores claimed that it's gonna be until November 3rd, but discount is still there. So, just like that, even if I try to sell my a6400, I lose a pretty noticeable amount of money, and I'll still need a lot in order to buy X-T3 (kinda afraid to buy used, due to scams and frauds, which is sadly pretty common in my region). And now, even if I'll be able to get X-T3 what can I actually do? My laptop barely can handle 1080 footage, and on top of new pc I'll still need other equipment, such as gimbal, recorder (at least zoom h1n is very affordable). And there's no guarantee that all my efforts will pay off. So there's that. Sorry for whining, but I feel pretty much crushed and depressed because all of that, and just wanna share my story.

What would happen if an inexperienced crew shooting a short film swapped equipment with a group of Hollywood filmmakers? The Hollywood crew would 100% make a better film with the lesser equipment. Fact of the matter is, equipment is just a tool to create art. Better tools can create better art, but it is ultimately up to the artist. An a6400 is an incredible camera! And you should be proud of your achievement. Imagine if the greats from the 1920's, 30's and 40's had access to such technology. They already created amazing films, and their cameras were shit compared to today. My point is, you can become an amazing cinematographer and story teller without the use of a $100,000 camera, or even a $2000 camera. A camera is a good tool, but your brain is an even better one. I wish the best of luck to you my friend. I hope you keep your head high and achieve all you've ever wanted.

I’m a 50 years old movies lover from Italy and last week I finally took home an old ARRI ALEXA CLASSIC. It’s a 5200 hours ex-rental camera, totally serviced by ARRI at Monaco last year, and with many accessories. It records only 2K, is cumbersome, is heavy and colored like a war tank. But I just don’t care… After owning BLACKMAGIC, CANON and SONY, this was my dream. And is finally a reality. The next step is to find an old external ARRIRAW recorder like CODEX or CONVERGENT DESIGN. But I’m in no hurry. Cheers from Italy.

Hi Mr. Potatojet. Just an addition to what you said about the LF's on board power options: you cannot power an LF with traditional Gold Mount battery. You would need Bebob's special high power battery back and even then you can only use Bebob's Cine battery series (e.g. A290), that has 2 extra pins for some clever power magic. P.s. The Hawk Woods v-lock battery that's on this LF isn't standard either. Its output is 26V instead of the standard 14V and one of the connector pins is blocked on the bottom so you cannot confuse it with regular v-mount chargers. This 100Wh battery is originally intented for the 65, there's a series of batteries especially for the LF.

*In my 40s and KNOW I’m going to sound like an old man* BUT.... Why are you young filmmakers trying to BUY these $50,000-$100,000+ cameras to shoot indie projects/“potential” Netflix projects that may or may not see the light of day? Most are financing these things and wind up selling them in the end. Not to sound discouraging (I encourage creativity), but the bright eyed dreaming of most of you is unbalanced. We RENTED equipment - as do most major studio houses (even if its renting within, it’s still a rental budget). So why is there encouragement for some random person to buy these six figure setups, which require multiple people who know what there doing? As someone who works with the Union, I implore you to RENT - or use a Blackmagic, GH5, or other sub $5,000 camera if you MUST have a body/lens in your permanent custody. Not a studio appropriate $100,000 rig. Unless you come from a wealthy family that is.

i can only make uneducated guesses, but i would imagine that if you can find the funding for a project you might appropriate some of those funds to buying equipment for further projects, if any. essentially, have the investors pay for it. if the movie makes money, no one is going to question the purchase. if it doesn't, at least you have the equipment and can use that as an enticement when making your next pitch to investors, 'i can save you xxx dollars because i'm serious enough about my craft to own the equipment.' maybe convenience, too, i don't know: i live in dayton, OH, it's not as if i can pop down to the local movie equipment shop and walk out with what i want, lol.

Probably worth noting that IMAX cameras are so loud that you generally can't record sound at the same time. Most of the benefits of high end digital camera are to improve workflow, but you could make the argument that IMAX cameras work against that, though in exchange for great image quality.

This is is a great video. It allows the average guy to understand what truely understand what a real cinema camera is all about. It should inspire all filmkers. Most of the featues are about turning films out efficiently. If you are cranking out films everyday, they make sense. I know someone who has used an Arri Alexa but his four feature films used something more ordinary.

Things that are on paper and demo reels of quick flash polished clips about true cinema cameras do nothing for me.
