Tour of the Amerigo Vespucci Offers a Glimpse into Italian Maritime Heritage at Port of Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES - On Sunday, July 7, 2024, Santa Monica Closeup took a tour of the majestic Italian Navy tall ship Amerigo Vespucci at the Port of Los Angeles. The vessel, a historic sailing ship and training vessel for the Italian Navy, has been docked at Berth 46 in the Outer Harbor since July 3 and will remain until July 8.
Visitors to the ship enjoyed free public tours, immersing themselves in the rich maritime history and intricate craftsmanship of the Amerigo Vespucci. Adjacent to the ship, the "Villaggio Italia" offered a taste of Italian culture with its Piazza Italia square featuring daily performances, exhibitions, and culinary delights.
Among the highlights of the six-day event were the thrilling air shows by Frecce Tricolori, the Italian Air Force's National Aerobatic Team, and evening screenings of acclaimed Italian films curated by the Venice Biennale’s Mostra Internazionale del Cinema. Guests also savored exquisite cuisine from Eataly’s “Ristorante Italia,” and enjoyed daily music performances by the Carabinieri’s Fanfara Cadet Team.
The Amerigo Vespucci, currently on a two-year world tour, has already visited 15 countries across three continents. After its stop in Los Angeles, the ship is set to continue its journey to Japan, Australia, India, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
For those interested in experiencing this unique event, tour reservations can be made at [tourvespucci.it/en/events/com...](tourvespucci.it/en/events/com.... The Villaggio Italia is open daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., with modified hours on July 8.
Stay tuned for more local events and stories from Santa Monica Closeup.

A friend and I toured the ship in San Pedro last Friday. It was like waiting for a Disneyland ride. A long wait in the hot sun for a quick walk-around on the ship, but I was not disappointed. It is a beautiful, historic vessel and the crew was friendly and helpful. The ship is now on it's way to Honolulu, which will take about two weeks. Tempting to hop a flight and greet the ship when it arrives in Hawaii. I hear my frequent flyer miles screaming, "Do it!"

When I was 15, I applied for the Morosini Naval Academy in Venice, then I changed my mind when I tried the uniform, which I found ridiculous. Now I find it wonderful (I am 67 now). I regret it now.

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking, And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking. I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over. Americo Vespucci is what the Americas are named after. Many called North America “Turtle Island” before that. Many don’t know that there were many pyramids in the Americas including deep into Illinois. The Vikings were actually here before Columbus as well.

I often wonder how much hidden knowledge there is around us that is buried. Look at the Teotihuacan Pyramid in Mexico City in 1900 and in 2022 and how different the area looks now compared to back then.

The Vikings didn't bring the discovery and settlement, therefore it was useless and credit given to Columbus. And it was Giovanni Caboto (aka John Cabot) who brought the English settlement of America. So Italians made America and Western Civilization.

Thank you for the video, wishing you guys organize further open air cinema shows and enjoy to know more who was Vespucci, these modern days most people have no courage for such ..explorers adventures, for such.. Impossible missions, travels and crucial discoveries. The boat seems much bigger than I imagined, try to realize those ages back what a huge achievement, yeah, it had to worth a fortune like a modern cruising ship.. who would give you today the money to build up a yacht on your own...go out sailing, nobody knows if you will ever turn back????😢😢😢 we never learn enough from our ancestors. The Vespucci's bad luck is that...he found only ice, cold and a desert land...the Colombo's fortune instead, much more South he found .. bananas😂😂😂😅😅 tell me how horrible had to be Europe with no potatoes, no tomatos...no corn😢😢😢 disgusting
