I just returned from my first trip to Portugal. What a country! So much history and culture. The Portuguese people are warm, welcoming and oh, so nice and friendly. Lisbon is magical! and Porto mesmerizing! I left my heart in Portugal, but I shall return!

Yep, no other city in Western Europe is older than Lisbon, older than it just cities in Greece, but Greece is in the east side of Europe. Many people ignore that Lisbon is such a old city.

Thank you for great and informative video. Visited Lisboa last year, and it's my favourite city in Europe. Didn't hear about Camoes before, but Pessoa is translated to Estonian too, and if correctly remembered - his 'Ode Maritime' was quite good reading :)

Beautiful tour. I'm going to Lisbon next week. Can't wait to see all of those amazing places and soak in the Portuguese culture and atmosphere.

I don’t think that Portugal is the absolute master of international relations because of having been present at many places centuries ago. I think that Portugal isn’t just very confrontational given its relatively small size. Sweden for instance hasn’t been a nation of discoverers or colonialism at all and she plays a very important role in brokering and supporting all kinds of progressive and peace related settlements.

@@kulturfreund6631 that's true. But you can't compare. That's two different countries with different backgrounds.. And, that's also true saying Portugal after the slavery, colonialism, fascism and several other bad things, being so small country, achieved a lot with their diplomacy. Worldwide..

Joe, this was a beautiful video. I enjoyed the pace, I like the snippets of history... and the music wasn’t overwhelming and fit in. Lisboa is my favourite city, then NYC. Well done.

Super bien documenté, excellentes images!

Amazing! No tsunamis of tourists, not one poor person begging for money, no rampant graffiti, no tour buses and taxis squeezing honking horns and squeezing through congestion; not even one restaurant or shop intrusively hawking their products! The camera even passed right beside where I just vacated and wow . . . it looks a lot quieter and much cleaner than when I departed two days ago.

silvério rebelo: Younare probably correct, there are people who know the city much better than I do. However, based on my time there, in both history and culture, I found Lisbon a great city; the underbelly I’m referring to are Air B ‘nB “ghettos” and terrible housing conditions for poor people.

Great video. One minute suggestion for improvement: at 5:06 you display the reference to the Citadel and write "Alcácova", when it's actually spelt "Alcáçova". Graphically the difference is minute but the phonetic implications are a bit more pronounced: the second "c" without the cedille (the little "comma" below the c) would sound "k" ("Alkákova"), when it's really supposed to sound "ss" ("Alkássova"). Sorry if I sound too picky. Just thought you might like to know. Keep up the good work!

Lisbon is the second oldest capital city in Europe, only behind Athens. If you consider Athens to be in Eastern Europe, then yes, Lisbon is the oldest capital city in Western Europe, but not city.

JOEJOURNEYS it’s either way right to say eldest city and eldest capital city, outside Greece (which is placed in the east side of Europe) there’s no other city older than Lisbon.

Athens - Greece , Plovdiv - Bulgaria , Chania and Chalcis - Greece are older than Lisbon but they are not in western Europe , Greece and Bulgaria are southeastern European countries. In culture and genetics the Portuguese are a western European people and Greeks a southern people.

There are many advantages to moving there along with many difficulties and challenges I’m sure, I am very impressed by Lisbon and have visited many times, but ultimately my goal is to live somewhere that is hot all year long.

Good question. Not sure how this is measured. But found this info: The Global Peace Index (GPI) has published its 2019 results, and after climbing two places, Portugal is officially the third most peaceful country in the world. As it has been very frequented by tourists in the old centre I tend to go more to peripheral neighborhoods where there’s also a lot of interesting stuff to see and where people are authentic citizens.

I wanna meet hot Brazilians for language lessons, singing and drinking.
