I’m taking this train very soon and I’m going to make a video (or two) for my channel on it. Now that I’m 100% sure I’m taking the train, I’m very happy to have found this video AGAIN. I’d say it’s a pretty decent train but then again we’ll have to see since it’ll be a very long journey.

Thanks for the memories! I did this one in 2010 but didn't use a roomette as I hired one for the southwest chief on the way to LA; I've taken trains from London to Barcelona, the top to bottom of Egypt and several in Asia but they've never been as nice as Amtrak....ps great username (I worked as a cartographer for Ordnance Survey in the UK).

One omission for those who have never (or rarely) ride Amtrak. The purple coloured vinyl seats in the cafe car is business class. It is a reasonable upgrade from coach, gets you a few perks, more AGR points, and is usually in 2+1 seating confirmation (great for solo travellers). It is almost always kid-free and is usually quieter than coach. I find the seats a slightly larger with a small amount more legroom. We use it a lot on the LSL.

The business class is in the cafe car on the Boston section. If you're going to New York, you can't use it.

I took this train many times in the 80's when I lived in CT. They still had the really nice Art Deco sleepers back then. I know the train splits and refuels at Albany/R station. I thought there was also another split in Buffalo were some cars ended up going into Canada. It's been many years.

There used to be a train that ran NYC to Chicago via Buffalo, Windsor, and Detroit. That split could have been part of that.

I counted from back to front 1 Viewliner baggage car 2 Viewliner Sleepers 1 Amfleet 2 Dinette 5 Amfleet 2 Coaches 1 Amfleet 2 Club/Dinette 1 Viewliner Sleeper 1 Viewliner Baggage Car For a total of 12 cars. It normally has 2 P42 locomotives for a total of 14 units, making it one of Amtrak's longest trains. I think only the Auto Train is longer which had 16 passenger cars pre-covid, and I'm not even counting the autoracks. Note that this was taken during the time when the LSL didn't have a full service diner. As enough of the Viewliner 2 diners were delivered, it started running with one of them, but still lacked full service dining because of Richard Anderson and Trump administration budget cuts. Only recently was full service dining reinstated, despite the fact that the train is still running a bit short. I believe it has one less coach and only one baggage car.

Also we all know this train is long at first but then it splits in haf at Albany where 48 we all know at the beginning of the train mostly splits away to become 448 and then as 448 leaves with the engines that brought the entire train anther engine call a P32AdDC comes in and takes the rest of the train as 48 to NY And then we all know it’s the same thing backwards from NY to Chicago as 448 retuns from Boston as 449 heading wast back to Albany then as 448 retunes from NY City as 49 then 449 backs into 49 to make a longer train again for the Chicago westbound

Damn, that sucks that you were stuck with a Cafe car in place of a diner. I rode on the Lake Shore Limited in June of 2017 and we had the same thing, and the food was not up to the normal standards at all.

I think this video was taken when there was a dining car shortage, so the LSL had to make do with a "Diner-lite". With the new Viewliner 2 diners, I believe it has one again. It goes on the New York section of the train.

Thinking of taking the California Zephyr from Sacramento to Chicago, and then the Lake Shore Limited to either Syracuse or Utica to visit my childhood home of Sherrill NY. I'm retired so I have the time. Never ridden Amtrak before, any advice? I see RailNation has a meeting in Sacramento this Oct. Be sure to visit the California State Railroad Museum!

First off, here's my Tour of the California Zephyr, if you haven't already seen it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m6KYyLWihbWZfZM.html It's a great ride, especially through the Sierra Nevada and the Colorado Rockies. Probably my best advice is to be prepared for the trains to be late. Also, I'm actually booking my trip to Sacramento for RailNation right now. ;)

I did the CA Zephyr in coach last thanksgiving and it was great. CA to Chi in a superliner. The food is STILL very good in the Dining Car $13-$28 for dinner. The breakfast sandwich in the cafe is good as is the burger. The layover in Chi easier to pay $30 for metropolitan lounge and get a nice shower and baggage claim. I took a cab to a decent restaurant. But as you head East to NYC/Boston in a viewliner the food is awful per Amtrak’s CEO former Delta Airlines CEO. He removed the dining car and now serves fast food but worst. All in all it’s really a terrific trip!

I will be riding the Lakeshore Limited this summer. AFTER I paid for my first class ticket for a roomette, I get an e-mail from Amtrak stating that the dining car on the Lakeshore Limited would be discontinued on June 1 and only cold food served in a box will be delivered to first class passengers. I also read that 10 dining cars chefs were fired from the Lakeshore Limited and Capital Limited which will also lose its dining car effective June 1. This is all the directive of the Trump appointed executives who now run Amtrak.

Sounds like quite a flat wheel at 0:59! Nice video though, I love Amtrak as well as many people do, but between the Government and the management at Amtrak and many other factors, the company seems to have the odds stacked against it! Oh yeah I see the crew is hard at work as always in the cafe car lol.

I can never knock an Amtrak crew after the way they personally treated me on my last trip In 2016. They remembered me on my return trip home from DC, and while there seemed to be a dining car issue where folks in coach did not get their meal times, when I went to check on it, they sat me down and fed me in a mostly empty dining car. Sad to see those dining car days are done.
