You got such beautiful shots!! This made me miss the TMB sooo much! I actually got nostalgic almost to the point of being sad haha. It's just such an incredible place, I wish I could go back :) I really like your voiceover and the way you shot and edited this and your use of titles to show where you were in the route and how far you'd gone. That's unfortunate that the restaurant you wanted to go to wasn't open anymore, I'm glad that was the only time the book steered you wrong though!

Thank You!!! I'm not sure sadness was the emotion I was expecting hahahaha but I understand. I wish I could be there now and not even a month has passed. :-) Also thanks for the encouraging words, I wasn't sure of doing voiceover but I don't have much footage of us talking to the camera like you did. It gave a lot of personality to your video! If everything goes fine, I will be posting daily the next stages. Col du Bonhomme looks SO much different than what you experienced. It was completely covered with snow! You did had very unusual weather that season as you commented. Hope you keep watching with nostalgic-happiness!!

Haha yeah I was surprised by the wave of sadness as well, guess I just miss it more than I realized! Yes our sunny weather was very unusual, did you end up having to hike a lot of snow passages?

Time to plan a new adventure! If I remember correctly, we cross a snow patch every single day after Les Contamines. Col du Bonhomme, Col de la Seigne, Lac Blanc (almost no lake!) and Le Brevent (I think you didn´t get there the last day) were specially covered. The weather forecast the week prior to our trip was awful, but we were lucky and walked under the sun most of time!

Wow! This was so helpful. We leave for Mont Blanc on September 6, 2016 (next Tuesday) and I feel so much more prepared after watching your series. I thought your videos, the editing, and the text (names, distances, etc.) were excellent! Have you done the Camino de Santiago by any chance? If so, did you do a similar series? I would love to watch it. If not, you should. :-) Thank you!

That's great Julie! So glad to hear as it was exactly what we wanted to do, help others get an idea of what's each day like :-) We haven't done the Camino (yet!) we don't know yet which will be our next adventure, but for sure there's going to be one! I'm sure you'll love the TMB, each day is different somehow and it's always beautiful. Just one more tip I didn't include in the videos is that transportation around Chamonix is free including the train to/from Les Houches. You just need to ask you hotel/host for a complimentary card valid for the length of your stay. Have a wonderful trip!

That's great to know, thank you! We did the Camino last year and it would have been wonderful to have a series similar to this to help with the preparations. I sent the link to your TMB series to all of our family members; I will probably post on Facebook, too, because I found it so helpful. Thanks again!

Thank you SO MUCH for taking the effort to make this series. It is very professionally shot and edited. I'm thinking of doing TMB this July (2017), and the videos gave me much inspiration. Could I know what camera did you use (GoPro?), and the model of your North Face backpack?

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! I used a GoPro Hero 4 Silver BUT I changed the settings to 'Medium' mode instead of 'Widescreen' to reduce the fish eye effect. My backpack is a North Face Terra 65 and it worked very well, it weighted around 10 kilos with about 2 lts of water. I had a little excess of small tripod, chargers I decided to take with me. Everything fitted quite well. Don't think about it to much :-) you will love the experience.

Hi I’m about to go on the TMB this year! I noticed that you mentioned music is by Opus Orange. I thought KZread does not allow normal commercial music on normal videos. Is Opus Orange music different from commercial music ? Another question - what kind of tripod did you use with your GoPro? Thanks !

You have the most organized and most beautiful TMB video I have ever seen. I have a question about Vale's turtle neck long sleeves shirt, is it midweight or lightweight? We are hiking this coming July 2019, would I need thermal underwears? Did you prebook the huts, hotels etc? What size of backpack would you recommend? Thanks.

  • @GermanDiManzo

malu221 Hi Malu! Thank you for your comment! Vale doesn’t like to be cold at all and still that was a light long sleeve fleece. Of course you need a warmer jacket to be able do add another layer. In general we spent most of hour time in short sleeves and shorts, so I guess you will do fine in July. No thermal underwear either, we had yoga pants that we used to sleep a couple of times. We prebooked everything in advanced and some popular places get full very fast! We had that issue twice and I started doing our bookings in January. The first was at Les Chapieux for the 2nd stage that forced us to stay at Col de la Croix for a longer day 3. And then stage 7 at Champex when we couldn’t stay in town. Hope that helps!

@@GermanDiManzo How cold does it get at night? I get cold easily. Did you checked in your hiking poles on the plane? We are starting our hike July 15. We are pretty much booked everything except Le Flegere. I need to find out if the lift at Brevent will be open this year. We decided we will just go down to Chamonix then go back up the next day and continue where we left off.

  • @GermanDiManzo

malu221, it will depend on the altitude the refuge is at, but certainly, I don't recall being cold at any of them, just a little at Croix du Bon Homme as our beds were in the basement and you have to go outside to access the dining room. I didn't keep a record of temperature, but that night felt like 5-10 C (we are talking early June). The dorm was warm enough to sleep. I'm sure the Brevent lift will be open, we enjoyed a great lunch at that particular station with a nice view of the valley and the Mont Blanc.... I will leave a controversial comment here.... :-) ... the last day is not that great after Brevent to Les Houches. We wanted to complete the whole loop as a personal accomplishment I guess, but if you don't care you can certainly finish at the Brevent and go down to Chamonix to celebrate :-). The only thing that I will consider is that from Le Flegere to Brevent is a somewhat steep ascent if you are adding that distance to the previous day. Looks like you did your homework already and you are ready to go!! I'm sure you will have a great time, don't be worry about the cold weather :-)

I almost forgot! Yes, we did check our hiking poles. The ones we have are easy to dismount in 2 pieces, so I covered the pointy parts with cardboard and put them inside our backpacks. They arrived safely.
