Tour de Fleece: Let's comb and card some wool to send as a surprise gift | Australian fiber haul

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello friends! Tour de Fleece has officially begun! But before we start with the actual Tour de Fleece vlogs, here is another appetizer: my patrons and I did a little Secret Santa exchange of wool and other spinnable floof. The rules were that you send your randomly drawn friend at least 50 grams of fiber that they can spin on their spinningwheels or spindles during the upcoming Tour de Fleece season. I didn't know much about the person I had to send my package to, so I opted for making a buffet, a cheese platter so to speak, of different fibers. I included some Flemish sheep, some Belgian milksheep, some alpaca and some Zwartbles. I do hope the recipient enjoys them. The second part of the video is me opening my secret santa package with you. A treasure trove of Australian wool! Pollwarth, exmoor blueface and bluefaced leicester. I am in love. And I am even more excited to start spinning in the Tour de Fleece.

I'll be spinning in public at my local yarn store where I teach spinning to celebrate the store's 30 anniversary and this fall during the middle of tour de fleece. I have to decide what I'm going to spin. Maybe some Finnish Landrace fleece that I have dyed and am combing at the moment.

@@MijnWolden Mostly (75%) Merino bloodlines with Lincoln (25%). The difference between the hand feel of Corriedale and Polwarth is quite significant, but they are both Merino/Lincoln crosses. Merino might be fine wool, but they don't have great carcass weights and suffer more than the English breeds from footrot. So, crossing Merino with these sturdier and more resilient breeds makes for quality dual purpose sheep that can be grazed much closer to the coast, where the rainfall is quite similar to Belgian conditions.

OMG I have of course seen the altar piece by the Van Eyck brothers but that was befor I got into sheep and spinning and I never thought about what breed it might be! That's so cool that it is an actual recogniseable breed, and not just a "generic sheep shaped object"! Those two braids you got look absolutely beautiful, Im curious to see what you make of them! And your own package also looked great, I love the cards you made. And I just have to share this with someone who will appreciate: I spent last weekend as a medieval reenactor in a museum, and they have a working great wheel! So I spent most of the time there spinning on it, which was such a cool experience!

@@MijnWolden It's the Prehistorisch Dorp in Eindhoven, so it's doable from Belgium depending on where you live. During the summer they have the Ambachtenweekend and the Textielweekend, that's when the chances are best that there is someone there who knows how to use it and can let you try it out. Even fibre that has been dyed and spun into wool can catch AQIS (Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service)'s eye. My penultimate order of Shetland wool (all dyed, spun, labelled and in balls) was held up while AQUIS checked it. What surprised me was that my most recent order didn't trigger AQIS, given that it actually included combed top to spin.

hmm so the "ij" in mijn is not a sound that occurs in English (or many other languages) but the best i can explain to you is that you can combine the "e" sound in "exit" with an eee sound (like in sleep) and say it quickly. So it's Mijn (my) and Wol (the o is pronounced like the o in "stop") and Den. my wool den.
