To be fair, mortality is pretty horrific in its own way.

Mokou is probably my favorite Touhou character. There's just so much symbolism put into her. Her name, Fujiwara no Mokou, (藤原　妹紅,) literally means "Scarlet (younger) Sister," tying her to an earlier Extra Boss. Her name can also mean "Paint me Red," alluding to her violent fate. Furthermore, "Mokou" can also be translated into Mourning (喪) Female Phoenix (凰). It also alludes to the Great Burnet, (吾亦紅 Waremokou, or should I say "Fujiware no Mokou"? Eh? EH?) a plant that has historically been used to stop bleeding, heal wounds as well as treat burns and insect bites. (You do remember who the first boss in Imperishable Night was, right?) "Fujiwara," in the meantime, is the name of one of Japan's oldest noble clans, tying her to the events of "Tale of the Bamboo Cutter." Another tie to it is that, at the end of "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," the emperor commands his troops to burn the elixir of life, along with a letter to Kaguya, at the top of the highest mountain in Japan. This is how Mt. Fuji is said to have gotten its name: From the abundant (富 fu) soldiers (士, shi/ji) ascending the slopes of the mountain. However, a second origin of the mountain's name is also suggested: "Immortal" (不死, fushi)... This was also the explanation for why smoke always could be seen rising from the back-then actively volcanic Fuji: The immortal smoke was reaching for the moon so that it may one day reach Kaguya. Another thing I really like is the relation between Mokou and Mononobe no Futo. Just like Mokou, Futo hails from an ancient noble clan, uses fire magic, has obtained immortality and has a rivalry with a fellow noble woman that's romantically involved with an emperor. (Y'know, 'cuz Tojiko's historical counterpart was the lover of Miko's historical counterpart.) Only, unlike Mokou, who is pretty casual about her fire magic mastery, Futo is a pyromaniac, and unlike Mokou who suffers her way through immortality, Futo enjoys being immortal. Furthermore, Futo actually succeeded in killing her rival, and even though Tojiko came back as a vengeful spirit, she and Futo are on friendly terms with each other, unlike Mokou and Kaguya... The historical lore behind Mokou and the Taoists is pretty interesting in itself... Very long story abbreviated: Futo's historical counterpart betrayed her clan in support of Miko's historical counterpart. A while later, Mokou's grandfather, Nakatomi no Kamatari, betrayed the Soga clan for a different emperor, causing Tojiko's clan to go extinct. Kamatari was given the clan name "Fujiwara" in gratitude but he was struck dead by lightning shortly thereafter, an incident which was said to be the curse of the Soga... Now, keep in mind that Tojiko uses thunderbolt danmaku... Yyyup, Tojiko probably killed Mokou's grandfather.

it was a moment of weakness the lore implies she encountered the man tasked with destroying the elixir and befriended him, but during his travels along with her she learned what he was carrying, and in a moment of weakness killed him and stole the elixir (2 of her spells show this, and that she regretted that choice ever since, " An Honest man's Death" )@@okguy167

To be fair, both portrayals have their origin in canon... For example, Mokou used to be a mind broken mass murderer... The first 300 years of her immortality she spent as a feared and hated outcast. Then she broke and, by her reconing, spent about 300 years killing everything she came across, human, youkai or otherwise, as a means of preserving her sense of identity. Then she fell into an apathetic depression and spent about 300 years doing absolutely nothing at all. Then she was finally reunited with Kaguya, and since then she's been spending the last 300 years and, to quote Mokou, "we discovered the joys of killing each other, over and over." Going by her choice of words there, I think it's safe to say that she's not entirely sane, but she's also way better off now than she's been in over a thousand years, a relatively well-adjusted adult in Gensoukyou.

"This maze has two ways through - One they might call hope" "To lose what was found, even knowing that someday, all will be found again" "Each failure shows me yet another way, another reason to be strong" I don't know if that was intentional, but I find it telling that even Mokou - Pretty much the only immortal Touhou character who actively hates being immortal - Can still see the positives of eternal life, perhaps without even realizing it. It's not just this song either, since Mokou's appearances in later games have her acting ever so slightly calmer, happier and less resentful with her so-called "curse". Maybe now that she spends time in a world filled with immortals, most of whom enjoy their immortality, Mokou could realize that all this time she never really hated the idea of living forever - Just the idea of living forever ALONE.

Listening to this as someone with minimal knowledge of Touhou, but having just listened to Flight of the Bamboo Cutter ~ Lunatic Princess, I assumed this was about a girl who was cursed to be completely unable to die until she managed to free the other girl from her prison.

^^ It's really cool and interesting to hear impressions like this. I really like your interpretations, and I love that you got that sort of connection between the two characters. Both of them are still immortal... but perhaps you could say they broke each other's curse by finding one another, so that they'll always have undying company.

Wonderful lyrics these are. I've rarely seen such well-crafted, syllabic lyrics in English-they're even better than what they often pull off in Japanese! Every syllable fits evenly to a beat of the song while retaining its own gravid meaning, and I love that. Huge props, this song is lovely.

This was the first song I ever heard by you. It was still when I was new to Touhou, mabye January or Febuary 2022. I heard alot of people talk about your channel, so I checked it out. You had uploaded Eastern Youkai Beauty around 2 hours ago, but I'm pretty sure I listened to this first. It's still one of my favourite of your lyrical adaptations of Touhou songs on your channel! :D Actually, that's a lie, I like all of them.

0:49 - 1:10 I always thought this part was reffering to her duels with Kaguya, but now that I think about it… I think it actually is about her status as an immortal. She desperately wants her life to end, but keeps moving forward, because death would mean leaving her fellow immortal all alone, and she couldn’t bear to do that.

Tried playing the two songs together. Managed to sync the talk sections, but found it highly amusing when Kaguya's song stops much sooner than Mokou's. Especially as it enters her singing about Never Dying Smoke. It's like Kaguya is just stepping back, and Watching Mokou's passion die, then burn once again. XD

Really?? What an interesting opinion. I usually do feel more comfortable pitching up my voice for these dubs because I imagine that most Touhou girls would have higher voices. However, I kept my natural low voice for this one specifically because I imagine Mokou's voice to be rather gruff and low. Sorry I didn't match your image of her, but I appreciate the compliment anyway!
