She's a tsukomogami ( 95% sure I spelled that incorrectly). In other words, it is an item that has gained a soul over time. despite them having a human form, their main body is actually the item thay always have with them. Break the item you kill the entity.

@@chainsofscarlet9054 It's less that a tsukumogami "has gained a soul over time", and more-so that Shinto, being animistic, holds that everything has a soul. A tsukumogami is just an item whose soul has grown powerful enough (usually over time) to the point where it can now animate the usually inanimate item that it resides within.

Something *really* neat about Primordial Beat, is that Raiko's final attack is actually to the rhythm of the song. It's essentially just her playing her own theme song for you. edit: As for Touhou story-wise, there's really as much story in Touhou as you wanna go looking for. Each game has its own (usually) self-contained story, and you can take each game as they are, or you can dig into the written works for more stuff involving the world of Touhou as a whole and linking games together, or the music CDs which take place in the future, stuff like that. There's a *lot* there if you want to go looking for it.

Raiko is a Tsukumogami youkai, which is basically a cursed object come to life and she is a literal drumset lol. She isn't the only musical instrument come to life though, there's also a koto and biwa instrument character in the same game. ZUNs love for trumpets was born in his school years in musical class, I believe. Also if you see literally any good artwork of Touhou, believe me when I say it's not official and is almost always from fans. Because in comparison to his music, his art in the Games is actually very amateurish, but people found a fondness to it.

Well, I think your last point kinda depends on what counts as "official," since there are a lot of official Touhou works that aren't entirely by ZUN. For example, there are quite a few official manga series that are illustrated by different artists, and a lot of the side games have their own art style.

Since you asked about ZUN's musical influences, a big influence of both the gameplay and music of Touhou was Taito's Darius series (particularly Darius Gaiden, which was initially a bit divisive for its unconventional score). Fun fact, a few years after the first Touhou game came out, he actually landed a job at Taito as a programmer by showing them his games! He didn't really like his time there though, but hopefully Touhou got so big he's now able to make a living from it. There's a whole page on the Touhou wiki dedicated to what influenced ZUN, and perhaps unsurprisingly, video game music features prominently. As for bands, I'd say he's _clearly_ a fan of Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Raiko is not a big deal in universe but her role is enormous for those who near her. In short plot of 14 game gave live to bunch of tools spirits Tsukumogami Raiko is one of them. But after story finished those newly born spirits destined to go back to nothingness. Raiko decided that dying out is not her forte and found a method to save her existence and shared it with other newborn tool spirits de facto becoming their leader "big sister" type. She is freespirited tho so she herself not doing that much with her followers they even can be considered to go they own ways at this point so Raiko is even less of the presence than in 14. But still she defied her own fate and help many other to pick their own

To answer some of your questions... Raiko is a drummer who was once a taiko drum, a traditional Japanese instrument. Ancient Japanese folklore included beliefs that everything in the world had life energy inside it, even objects, and that objects with excess positive or negative energy could come to life to either bless or curse whoever gave them that energy. Onto the title of the game, Double Dealing Character refers to the final boss of the game who is a backstabber-"double dealing" referring to a common method of cheating while playing cards, and more generally, a cheater or underhanded person.

One of my favourite things about touhou is the sheer amount of fan content that exists for it. You listen to this - phenomenal as always - and then realise there's someone who has turned this song into any genre you could imagine. And then the same for every other song in the series. Akatsuki Records, diao ye zong, Hatsunetsumiko's, halozy, bossanova If you have time for an enormous rabbit hole (I'm 400 songs deep and still plunging), start searching for 'remixes' or any of the names I just mentioned.

Oh I'm gald you mentioned Touhou song names being fun. There's some great ones out there with how ... something they get, I don't even know the right adjective. Just to pull a few random ones out of my memory: Septette for a Dead Princess Doll Judgement ~ The Girl Who Played with People's Shapes Bloom Nobly, Ink-Black Cherry Blossom ~ Border of Life A Maiden's Illusionary Funeral ~ Necro-Fantasy Deaf to All but the Song Faith Is for the Transient People Tomorrow Will Be Special, Yesterday Was Not Catastrophe in Bhavaagra ~ Wonderful Heaven Walking the Streets of a Former Hell Corpse Voyage ~ Be of good cheer! Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom ~ Nuclear Fusion Emotional Skyscraper ~ Cosmic Mind The Shining Needle Castle Sinking in the Air Dichromatic Lotus Butterfly As a side note of a fun pattern: Usually when a title has that ~ in it, the part before it is originally in Japanese, but the part after is in English - Raiko's theme for example is originally "始原のビート ~ Pristine Beat". Ones that don't have it can be in Japanese or English, but usually Japanese, like the other song here, 魔力の雷雲 (maryoku no raiun).

Extra Stage bosses tend to be an epilogue after the main game, and are usually the climax of the game's pace Where the final bosses tend to have 6-7 phases, extra bosses have around 10 or more phases that incorporate patterns that are more unorthodox than the ones present in the main game Tbh, they're probably my favorite parts of the games since the way you unlock their stage and the fights themselves feel like massive events in their own right

Incidentally, the "primordial beat" that's being referred to in the title of Raiko's theme is thunder. Her name means "thunder drum" and is the name of the drum of the lightning god Raijin. Hence also why the Extra Stage theme references thunderclouds.

The vast majority of Touhou stages have two music themes; for the general stage section, and for the boss. This is one such pair of songs, although in the opposite order. So you're right in that they're sort of connected. Funnily enough, you mentioned how the music might connect to what's happening in the gameplay, and that's actually often the case in the stage themes. The elements of the stage are timed to appear at certain points in the song, and a few countermeasures are in place to try and make sure it doesn't go out of sync (though it can still happen if the game isn't running at the correct FPS). Boss themes don't get that luxury though, since the fight will progress faster if you have higher DPS, and vice versa. As a result, stage themes often tend to be a bit more dynamic overall (with the usual exception of final boss themes, which do break the mould in several games).

I quite like how Touhou handles its story. Much of it lies underneath the surface. For those who do not care for story in their games, it is simple and quick to read. One can get to the gameplay in a hurry without being held in long cut-scenes. For those intrigued by story, they can find it. Thought was put into the setting and characters, which you can pick up from the music. Quite an amount of it is a matter of interpretation, so fan-theory types run rampant. To put it simply, there is a massive amount of content in Touhou. How much and which parts a fan (player or not) engages with is entirely up to themself.

So basically with the music titles, occasionally zun will give it a title in japanese, with an english subtitle at the end separated by a tilde. For example, raiko's theme was originally written as "始原のビート ~ Pristine Beat". This also applied to most touhou games, usually following the formula of "(touhou in kanji) (3 kanji) ~ (english title). The subtitle's kind of like a rephrasing/summarization/different conveying of what the japanese title says.

There's this concept of "tsukumogami" in Japanese folklore. When a tool (or other object) stays around for long enough, it gains a life, becoming a being in its own right. These can be benevolent or malevolent, depending on how they were treated before. Raiko Horikawa is a tsukumogami born of a taiko drum. Due to game plot reasons, she kinda... changed over from a traditional taiko to a modern drum set. So she isn't just a drummer. _She's the drums herself._ In Primordial Beat ~ Pristine Beat, you can hear both a taiko drum and modern drums! She even plays part of her own theme with her bullet firing sounds, though sadly it only lines up properly if you give yourself the extra challenge of doing the whole fight "pacifist" (i.e. never attacking, timing out all boss patterns). The midbosses of Raiko's stage (which the other song is for - hence her sharing the second picture with the two of them) are also tsukumogami, of a koto and biwa, other traditional instruments. Strings instead of Raiko's percussion. Raiko's on the benevolent side of that tsukumogami spectrum, generally just being there for a good time, and even her boss battle is just her trying out her new drum body in a fight, and it ends quite amiably. Honestly, of all the higher-tier Touhou characters, she's one of the ones with the least moral failings IMO. No scheming or super selfish behaviour, she's just there to have a good time and share that with others, and build a good life for her fellow tools. The three-comma symbol on Raiko's drums (mitsudomoe, three tomoe) can often be found on taiko drums, and both the symbol and taiko drums have an association with the thunder god Raijin. Fittingly Raiko's name is written as "thunder drum", and she has some thunder themed attacks.

To explain the titles, a lot of them are titled "Japanese title ~ English title" where usually they have different meanings or might give different insights into the music, but in this case it's one of the odd ones where they're pretty much the same so the translated title sounds a bit redundant, "始原のビート ~ Pristine Beat" translates into "Primordial Beat ~ Pristine Beat". It's not always this way though, some are "Japanese title ~ Japanese title" and some are just a phrase or name in Japanese

The story of Touhou can be both simple or complicated depending on how deep you go into it. On the surface level it's pretty easy to understand. It takes place in a sort of parallel dimension called Gensokyo where every supernatural being you can think of, from youkai, to spirits, to even gods can exist. (All in the form of anime girls, of course) Though there are rules and such where they have to play nice to live there. The main character, Reimu Hakurei, is like the Warden for this Prison/Nature Preserve that enforces these rules, so when these demons or gods get uppity and want to change things how they see fit, Reimu has to go and quiet them down... Often by force. Every game is featured around one of these "incidents" with Reimu (and a few other characters) investigating and stopping some unusual behavior they come across. Most incidents aren't directly related to each other, but characters you defeat in earlier games may show up as allies or even become a playable character in the games that come after, because they either take a liking to Reimu and want to help, or also want to beat up the other youkai or god that ruined their day. The bullet hell part is more or less the agreed method of how they settle disputes in that world, because it's a non-lethal game of skill and considered fair to both parties, like a game of dodgeball that you're betting on. If you can dodge their attacks and still smack them down, your opponent has to admit defeat and submit to your demands. (and youkai are forgiving enough to let you try again if you lose, which is the canon reason why you can continue after a game over) And then lastly, "Extra Stages" like the one Thunderclouds of Magical Power and Primordial Beat play in are only accessible when you are able to beat the game without getting a game over. (also referred to as a "1cc") Extra Stages only come in one difficulty level (hard), and you have to start it all over if you die. So even if this sounds lower tempo than a typical touhou song for you, I guarantee you're gonna be white knuckling through the entire thing.

According to an interview, ZUN played a trumpet in school, which explains why his affinity for trumpets in his music. Aa for Raiko and her theme, she's the spirit of an old taiko drum, which is why the song features more percussion than usual. ZUN has commented previously that he wanted the percussion to be even more prominent, but it didn't fit with everything else, so he made the current version of the track. Thunderclouds of Magical Power is the Extra Stage theme, so you hear it on your way to Raiko. You are approaching said thunderclouds and the music and weather get more intense the further in you go. Also, you can notice the change in percussion from snare drums and cymbals here to taiko drums and wood blocks in Pristine Beat. Double Dealing Character is about an incident caused by someone (Seija) manipulating others for their own gain. While Sieja isn't the final boss, the main game's English titles are traditionally named after the individual responsible whatever is going on.
