Toughest Gearbox in the World?

Ғылым және технология

Just like the transmission on your car, a ship needs a gearbox. Only we pump a LOT more power through these gearboxes. On ships, the gear box also faces the challenge of combining multiple engines into a single propeller shaft. Discover some details of how RENK does this.

“Let’s get into this and see what we can discover…” We discovered - A marketing team that’s managed to convince the company that it’s absolutely essential that they go to Hawaii to shoot the visuals 😂

Including the LCS in their promo video isn't a very good for sales considering the issues they have had with their gear boxes. Still it's a really cool mass of engineering there. I am always amazed at just how fast something that big and heavy can be pushed through the water. Even the typical (500'ish) ro/ro pax doing 23knots is impressive. Not to mention the highspeed ro/ro pax cats running 38knots or so.

They were very careful to only show the Independence class LCS, not the Freedom class. Both have Renk transmissions, but only the Freedoms have the gearbox issues.

Ford: "Hey, do you guys still remember that time in the 70s when we made cars that exploded? No? Okay, let me remind you of it with a flashy video!"

very little is new in marine propulsion. The last big jump was WW 2 and the period just after the war. I have used Rank products mainly vibration eliminating couplings. They are known for integration different types of power generation methods.

Just about all the components of electric drive are new. The use of electric drive in marine propulsion itself may not be new, but the way it is being done has seen huge advances recently, which has lead to pretty dramatic changes in the propulsion set-ups now being used commonly, particularly the increasing use diesel-electric, turbo-electric and integrated electric propulsion, and of course the use of battery power for a lot of new applications. Diesel engines have changed a lot too. They've gotten more efficient, cleaner, and a whole lot bigger. Electronic controls have utterly changed the way propulsion plants are maintained and operated by crews. Sure a piston is still a piston and a propeller is still a propeller, but the details have changed a _lot._

I'm sure they are great products, but what struck me the most was the awful music - very 1990s promo muzak.
