Same! I’m in Sacramento too. I have a north facing porch that gets no sun, only bright light and it is always so hot during our summers. I end up resorting to some houseplants outside instead.

Dead nettles (Lamiums) are very attractive. They are also invasive non-natives, originating in Eurasia.

Not all of them are invasive. The yellow blooming ones definitely are (often called “archangel”) However lamium maculatum is usually well behaved. I’ve got a garden full of native plants but I’ve chosen Lamium “white Nancy” for some dry shade under a silver maple where dandelions, false strawberry, and weeds are trying to take over. I’m hoping this groundcover can out-compete these.

@@thegonzalezs4953 I have the one AM Leo sells that holds a pruner & soil knife. Love it. You can buy it on its own or with their tools. I use a Felco #2 (their version is ok if you're not doing this kind of work often) and the AM Leo deluxe soil knife (which rocks). I think they have one that has a pouch for a folding saw, too. I keep my Silky saw separate in a Corona fabric pouch. Fits into it like a glove, and is less cumbersome than having a big, wide tool pouch on the belt, especially for days when I don't need the saw.

@@pamelah6431 Thanks so much for responding to me! I have a 5’x20’ bed under mature maple trees and would like shrubs and/or perennials, preferably with a “white” theme, nothing taller than about 4’. This used to be my white garden, mostly wonderful hostas, before deer moved in and chewed them to the ground. I currently have some brunneras, dryopteris ferns, and a few hellebores, all barely surviving. Any and all recommendations would be sincerely appreciated. ❤️
