I live in Brazil and here in front of my apartment I saw parrots going mad when a toucan approached.... Now I know why...

Yes, they ARE predators. Not what a casual observer would ever consider gazing on a peaceful looking, grape chugging toucan at a pet store or zoo...

@@frostyflakgun Well, predators gonna predate. All animals that consume other animals are merciless if you think about it, but I understand what you mean. It's completely unexpected when these birds are never seen in their natural habitat. They have a very clownish appearance and behavior, however those bills are giant-sized and serrated for a reason...

I mostly connect it to the eyes and the thing I remember hearing about them: - Predator birds have their eyes focused forward to estimate the distance and lock on to their prey as they approach. - Preyed upon birds have their eyes on the side of their heads to give them a full 360 panoramic view of their surroundings so they can spot predators coming at them from any angle So up until now I never expected toucans to be such active predators. At least not for animals that big.

They literally make predator noices so this doesn't surprise me.

Which is exactly why animals like big cats will never make safe pets. You can't teach a wild animal not to follow it's natural instincts, and a human being is no different to a tiger, than that toy is to Maeve. But people still try to argue against this e_e

I go over this a bit in the video but even eagles will usually leave them alone once they're adults. They just aren't worth the effort when you can get a nice juicy sloth or monkey far more easily. Toucans are quick and can easily dive through and maneuver in the dense branches of the forest.

bird of prey are a problem for all parrots and toucans. But a toucan has short tail feathers and that means it primarily flies in the forest. Birds of prey (eagles, falcons, hawks), deep dive for open space flying birds. Even macaws are wary when they see a hawk in the sky.

Large forest-dwelling accipitrids (i.e. hawks and allies) like the ornate hawk-eagle occasionally prey on toucans. Smaller toucans have more enemies than the large Ramphastos species (on that note, when Brock said Green-billed toucans are one of the smaller species, he was only talking about the genus Ramphastos, not about the whole toucan family which contains 4 other, generally smaller genera). Apart from accipitrids, there is an interesting case of a collared forest falcon from Yucatán which specialised in keel-billed toucans. In 10 weeks, it killed 27 individuals.

@@r.sulfuratus Right. I rarely talk about the other genus of toucans other than ramphastos here unless I specify otherwise. And when I was speaking of the birds rarely being preyed upon by raptors I was primarily talking about the toco toucan. Although, toco does usually tend to prefer more open areas while the smaller species prefer the thicker forest areas. It's not that the birds of prey don't prey on toucans- But the Toucans are very vigilant and quick. And because of their short wings and tail feathers they can more easily maneuver quickly through dense foliage which makes them a difficult target. Especially when they are altered.

If I was a Jaguar I would stay away from them too. Sure I could kill it, but one mistake and that bird rockets into my eye beak first. You all saw Bea doing this...

Disturbing, though necessary. On a side note, it’s nice to see Beatrix in a more comfortable environment for her. Not anxious at all. Hope she develops that confidence outside the cage.

She has some cage bound tendencies so she's far more comfortable in her cage than she is out and about. Which is a learned behavior and not something that is at all healthy for her. In time she will behave more like Maeve.

Wild birds like toucans are, in all essentiality, dinosaurs. Evolved dinosaurs that look very different to how we'd expect dinosaurs to look, but that predatory, meat-eating dinosaur DNA has never left them, really!

Wow! I never would have thought of Toucans being predatory birds. Usually when you see them presented in wildlife shows they're always shown in a more positive light. They're like parrots but you can get bit or they only eat fruit. I've never seen a Toucan in this light before until today. Great presentation! I learned something new to add to my own wildlife knowledge. Yeah, I used to read quite a bit of books as a kid. I'm still searching and researching older animal topics, getting "newer" answers for what I may have missed.

Shows another reason why toucans should not be considered ‘easy’ pets. Thanks for the whole picture and education. Still love your flock 🥰

3:57 , yikes, looks like a parrotlet (one of my favorite birds). Poor guy, I hope at least the toucan put the nutrients from it to good use. To be honest, it’s not that disturbing. It’s natural, unlike a domestic cat or dog killing one. I find dogs and cats killing birds to be extremely disturbing, since it’s unnatural (for the parrot, since cats and dogs, especially cats are invasive).

@@UlexiteTVStoneLexite Looks more like a blue-winged parrotlet actually. Plain parakeets have darker beaks, longer tails and tidbits of yellow. Lots of predatory birds here like to pick them off when they can actually catch them, most captures seem to be through ambush or picking off the inexperienced fledglings. Both birds are pretty adorable, even considering their behavior.

@@hybridAbsol ringnecks are in Africa and India, the do cans are in South America. Definitely not a ringneck.

I didn't expect them to be able to hunt very easily with such awkwardly large beaks. (Note: Fruit Loops are not actually part of a balanced breakfast for toucans!)

I used to think toucans are friendly herbivore birds hehehe when I was young because of the George of the Jungle film. This definitely changed my perception of toucans.

The bird at 10:51 looks like an amazon, I recognize the wing feathers. They look like the secondaries of my yellow-crowned amazon. The red and blue definitely suggests that.

most birds have excellent vision, being able to see nuts, seeds and berries on the ground while flying pretty high in the air.

waaaay back in 2000 i worked at a pet bird store that offered boarding, and one of our regular boarders was a toucan. He was the only tame boarder we did not allow out of the cage (one half of a giant pagoda, not a normal bird cage, it was more meant to be an outdoor aviary even though we had it inside, the other regular boarder that used it was a golden pheasant, not at the same time of course). he was incredible and possibly my favorite boarder, but we had to be very, very careful because he would try to attack the other birds through the bars if he thought they were close enough. I kinda wonder if they can be trained for falconry... toucanry?

Great. That's just what the worlds needs right now.. Killer Toucans!!

Respect your decision but im glad he educates us on these. It lets people know that these are very much wild birds and should not be kept as pets. Especially with other types of birds.

Yeah I was getting kind of nervous but I really liked it at the same time.

Learnd about this when I first started watching your channel when you did one of these back when you had Ripley. Great to get this out for prospective buyers to open there eyes on what there wanting to get in to and change there minds. Not many people think about this or even about how brutal other cute animals actually are or can be. Even the simple chicken.

KZread is REALLY getting obnoxious with commercial interruptions. There were at least TEN while I was trying to watch this video 🤬

I can’t imagine the toucan taking down a cockatoo or some large parrots. The parrots in the video were small. I’m sure large parrots would put up a huge fight they have very powerful hooked beaks.

The shape and size of that beak just remind me that of quetzalcoatlus and other azhdarchid pterosaurs, they used their huge beaks for hitting and grabbing their preys, just such as these tucans do in the video...
