I've finally started a shogun 2 campaign and to say that it's fun and satisfying to decimate an entire superior army with whatever troops you have. It's awesome.

Battles like that are exhilarating when you don't know if you'll make it or not. I had one similar to that last week where I had about 2500 men and the enemy ambushed me with 4800. I had mostly samurai units and a fully upgraded general. Ended up killing all 4800 enemies, but only had 23 Bulletproof Samurai (heavy nodachi added by a mod) and the daimyo general with three guardsmen left at the end of it all.

Most anime don't feature them at all anyway. They do look cool and they're useful supporting/defensive siege units. I don't know if there's much else to say on the topic since it's pretty unanimously agreed that they're useful, but there you go.

Battle music = the most relaxing music

I can understand you. I too had problems in the beginning. :) The trick is to put an ambush -during- battle. Because AI of Shogun II and expansions is good enough to choose secure positions, you have to lure them out. In one battle, there was a forest in the center. I hid marched my spear units in it, and archers stayed behind. Then I sent my general near enemy, and his cavalry came chasing, who were shocked by sudden charge of spearmen. He lost his cavalry and general, and remaining army fled.

Thanks. A funny fact is that I have seen the units of FoTS lose very badly from the good old Ashigaru, even when armed with cannons and Gatling guns. The older units are good in melee and armored better. And the old breech loading medieval cannons easily silence the modern cannons. :)

I remember them also saying something like ''Yari Ashigaru niko daimyoas'' but maybe I'm wrong though. And yeah I also LOVE the Ashigaru units. The hats, the ''full'' armour some of them wear and the weapons are simply good-looking. Coming from a European guy who's not into anime or the sort.

This song makes me think of the dogfights in the Pacific theater of WW2 before the Kamikaze raids.

@ashlehbh I had Uesegi (they had strong warrior monks, and hard difficulty) finished legendary (or something, the one where you capture all japan) campaign on hard, ONLY using ashigaru... ok, i did use a couple of monks, cause i got some for completing a quest

Odd question, but which game is the music between 23:40 and 24:00? I know I've heared it in from a battle at some point but cant find the track, and wouldn't mind listening to it again for old times sake.

Oh yeah, you can certainly do some old-fashioned butchering if you manage to get up close, but that's why I take time to interlace the fields of fire from my rifle troops and artillery. If I do everything right, the enemy won't get close enough to spit at my men before being mowed down.

i know it sounds silly but i think there should be a Insect Total war, but just imagine though,ants are regular infantry, spiders can be defencive/heavy type of unit, your general could be a ant queen or something important, and wasps can be a supportive kind of unit.

Yeah, and you can widen up your troops to increase their field of fire, but have to pay the price in the form of more time to mobilize. Have you tried ambush tactics? Even good old warrior monks can win just by surprise killing a unit, and starting a chain of routing.

Well, no other faction get's ashigaru bonuses to my knowledge, so stick with Oda if you want to go with a big traditional army. They are great if used correctly, but they have lower average morale than your bread and butter line infantry army, so you have to pick your opportunities carefully and act swiftly when you find them. Do not allow you enemy to dictate the contact. You must be like the crane striking at the salmon. I'm more of a "gaijin and Gatling guns" player personally.

They are great, but you need some Samurai to hold vital positions, or to punch holes in their defense. All hail the Oda clan for their ashigaru though >:D
