It's been a while since Total War: Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai - now renamed A Total War Saga: Fall of the Samurai - first came out. It is one of the better Total War games however, combining swords and arrows with guns and cannons, making for a truly diverse and epic battlefield.
Fall of the Samurai takes place during the modernization of Japan, with heavy Western influence making its mark on the battle for the soul of Japan - and which ruler captures that souls, the Shogun or the Emperor, is up to you as you stake your claim to domination as a clan fighting for either one of these two.

    Insane amount of depth? The minister system was nice but extremely shallow and depended on dice rolls. It only provided some stats. And no, those stat bonusses were not a removed feature in later titles. Shogun 2 and FotS had ministers + adding agents with skill trees, so you could use a Geisha for example to boost region growth and public order. Same thing just in a new dress. Even Rome 2 (ee) has various systems to control certain aspects of your empire on a political level.

If it wasn’t for me spending 10s of thousands of my currency they would’ve been dead very early in the campaign but ended the game having 13 territories and managed to take the north (with my help mostly from agents) while I focused on taking south of Japan. Yeah, this expansion is definitely great from a gameplay perspective, the closest TW games ever got to industrial combat, but good history it was not. Historically both sides equipped themselves with guns and artillery, and the reason the Shogunate lost in the end is quite complex, and doesn't boil down to some luddite sentiment rejecting modern weapons.

    @@eric1221bday part of which is due to in fact that the Shogun was not doing their job that was the whole point of the position of the Shogun was originally made in the first place. The title of Shogun was like "generalissimo that quelled barbarians", which was not happening with the Western powers in Japan. If I remember right though, the Emperor did not issue the order to "expel the barbarians" of his own, but was kinda more forced/persuaded to do so by Pro-Imperial factions. Which is where the order came to clash with the Shogun as they knew full well they couldn't execute the order or wanted to at that. The game also doesn't go into the fact that the original pro-imperial faction of Choushu, actually held out against punitive expeditions against it by other factions called upon by the Shogunate which included Satsuma at the time. Choushu held its own against a large Shogunate force made up of several clans and if I remember right, and the battlefield scene was close to something that would've been seen during the American Civil War; and I believe trenches were used as well. As we know, Satsuma would later switch allegiance to Imperial and after the Boshin War would have a rebellion, (due to the abolition of the Samurai class), and would have to fight their former Imperial allies (of which Choushu took great pleasure in taking revenge).

    Shogun 2 Total War Fall of the Samurai, Truly the Panicle of Total War. The Graphics, the Sounds (Guns and Cannons never sounded so good or since), the Music (Seriously best music in TW game iv played, while im sure its the same stuff from shogun 2 it works), It all just pulls you into the setting and the way the entire map changes between seasons also adds to the immersion. Their is just something about "Transitional" periods that meshes well with Total War, be it Fall of the Samurai or Attila with the end days of the Roman Empire. The clash of the Samurai vs the Western style of Rifles, Cannons and Saber cavalry just FEELS SO GOOD! The Art for the unit cards and that old photograph look for buildings Looks amazing. While you cant upgrade the ROADS in this (though you do get a railroad), you can upgrade the TOWERS for the castle and the first time i saw the range on those cannon battery towers my jaw hit the floor, they covered the entire map. While the castles do get old it is nice to see them progress from a FORT with archer towers to a STAR FORT with cannon batteries and Gatling guns. This is also the first game where your navy is more then just a Water Taxi/Trade Defense fleet with the ability to provide fire support and Bombard the shore. The port battles are also pretty fun. However the game does have its flaws (mostly AI related), like you said their aren't that many maps though i can't say i ever noticed it, though i did notice their are only 4 or 5 siege maps. The Defensive Naval AI is frustrating beyond belief with how it just sits in spawn waiting for you to get into firing range (sadly this ai seems to have spread to the OTHER game periods as well, which makes those battle less fun then they should be). And just like in Shogun 2 the siege ai will just climb the walls while getting shot up by your troops, its even EASYER to defend in FotS the it is in Shogun 2, unless they bring artillery and Ship bombardment.

    Quick thing to remember while factions start out equal the shogunate side as a whole has the majority control over Japan meaning playing through as an Imperial faction is more difficult as more clans are prone to picking fights and being overall more hostile in diplomacy.

    @andrewle7429

    if I remember right, the Imperial factions were disjointed while the Shogunate factions were grouped up together more. However, I'd say the Imperial factions generally have better start positions. We already saw how Satsuma not only starts at the bottom of Kyuushuu, but their starting town also has a blacksmith. Choushu's position is alright at the southern edge of Honshu, and Tosa basically starts where former Chosokabe clan starts at the southern part of Shikoku. There's also the DLC factions of Saga and Tsu, where between the 2 I'd say Tsu is the hardest Imperial start position of pretty much where former Iga clan starts. Tsu's traits are also not that great either in my opinion. Conversely, Saga starts at the northwestern edge of Kyuushuu and has better traits I'd say. Of the Shogunate factions, I'd say that Aizu is the most interesting, though they start in northern (but not the northern edge) of Honshu. What makes Aizu interesting is that they have uniquely named units based off of directional animal guardians (such as White Tiger infantry, named after the white tiger known as Byakko in Japanese and Baihu in Chinese). Their start position presents a dilemma for the player to either expand North, (which involves fighting other pro-shogunate factions, though we all know that the AI can sometimes switch at the drop of a bucket so the early game allegiance of AI are fickle), or expand South and encounter Imperial factions faster.

    Shogun friendly clans wiped out a lot of the pro imperial clans while I was building up in Satsuma. So I spent 60+ turns taking Hyuga, Bungo, Higo, and Buzen. Then I just brought back the Choshu, Fukue, Hiroda, Saga, Goto, and Tsushima as vassals. Then I made sure Tosa survived. Basically took only the provinces necessary for railroad and made vassals out of everything else. It’s been my most interesting campaign so far.

    One thing is that when you auto resolve traditional samurai army vs modern rifles, traditional samurai units are always losing. somehow they made it that way. So if your modern rifle army has some traditional units (samurai Calvary etc.) and you auto resolve the battle with another army which has some modern rifle units, you will lose all of your samurai units in your army. This forces you to fight the battle to win instead so you won’t lose the samurai units.

    I love FOTS, unfortunately the campaign is too fast to fully appreciate some of the final technological advances, like cannon towers. The geography of the map also means 2 well equipped stacks will be enough to eat up the whole maps. Open battles in FOTS are a camper's dream and IA artillery can be easily tricked into uselessness with almost zero casualties. Having artillery always permits you to use defensive strategies because the IA will ALWAYS advance against your artillery. Also, if you think a cavalry charge can solve your enemy artillery issues like in every other TW title, you are in for a big shock😭 Damn I've spent way too many hours on that game...

    From what I noticed FOTS battles become incredibly easy once you start fielding artillery in decent numbers, this is the only total war game in which artillery is ACTUALLY better than infantry and not just some gimmick unit like in Rome Total war ( where artillery was only useful to quickly capture cities with stone walls ) , artillery basically allows you to defend, thus allowing your infantry to always fire the first volley as well as allowing really shitty infantry to win gun fights against mid to late game infantry ( I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve seen levy infantry beat line infantry or some sort of bear infantry thanks to artillery support ).

    Nice; I love FotS, it’s maybe my favorite Total War in general. It’d love to see CA really push the envelope with the gameplay from here, blur the lines between the battle and campaign maps, and jump into the 20th century with WWI and the beginning of the end for the colonial era. I guess it could be Empire’s FotS. They’d have a lot of innovation to do, but I think it could work, and is just the kind of shot-in-the arm revolution the series needs.You could simulate the rhythm of the war and the change in technology and doctrine with the tech tree: suicidal frontal attacks give way to long term defensive investment on the campaign map as you try to hold out long enough to get the tech tree and unit requirements to break the deadlock with combined arms, fire and move tactics supported by creeping artillery. What are your thoughts? I say it’s all there in FotS in seed form.

    Land combat wouldn't fit the period. Any attempt of making a pitched battle would be pointless suicide with the power of artillery and machineguns. And forget flanking, the western front went from the Swiss border to the ocean. Battles were more a question of bruteforce logistics than tactics. Total War should stop at approx 1880-1900 when new weapons like the Maxim Gun and smokeless powder change everything.

    Hey! Yes for sure, Shogun 2 and Fall of the Samurai would be great starting points, especially if you love the settings and time periods. Then you could branch out to some of the other games if you’d rather have something European, for example. What historical setting would you say you’d rather play in? Either way, you can’t really go wrong with Shogun 2/FOTS.

  • @HansAlRachid

    @@AndysTake Sweet, thank you for the reply! From what I've seen, I feel like the setting in Fall of the Samurai in particular is really appealing to me - any historical setting undergoing a transitory period with regard to technology instantly gets bonus points in my mind, that clash is really interesting. Aside from that, I think either the early years of the Holy Roman Empire for its sheer scale or the Anglo-Saxon/Briton conflicts with their guerilla-esque skirmishes could make for particularly interesting backdrops. In any case, I'll definitely give Shogun 2 a shot!

    @@HansAlRachid I would DEFINITELY check out FOTS and Attila if I were you. I have a review of Attila Total War in 2021, check it out if you will and let me know what you think! Attila and FOTS are my two favourite TW games in the past decade, they’re both brutal, they’re both beautiful, and they’re both in that somewhat darker transition period. Attila also has a DLC featuring Charlemagne, which is just awesome (and a Medieval mod which is extremely good)!

  • @HansAlRachid

    @HansAlRachid

    @@AndysTake Went and did just that - great review, by the way. Attila looks great, I love the use of orange tinting, both visually and thematically - the twilight hours of the roman empire. The gameplay sounds great as well with how varied the factions play. Also really cool how they use DLC, if FotS and that Charlemagne one are any indication - remixing and expanding existing systems to such an extent is a fun angle. I'll definitely check it out after Shogun 2, as I've already gone and bought that one after your review. I'm sort of worried about how Attila will perform on my system, as I have a multi-core CPU setup and you mentioned that the game struggles with that, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. Thanks for the recommendations!

    Ay first play through I alway have difficulty defending my castle towns, especially when my forces are outgunned. Then I started placing all of them around the castle, with line infantry forming a square formation around the castle structure with support units behind them all away from the walls that the enemies climb on to. This way the enemy units will be tired once they reach the top, and when they do thet trickle in one by one allowing my ranged infantry to pick them off from a distance compared as to engaging them on the walls where the defending players suffers more casualties. Some melee units do get a chance to charge at my riflemen but with the right placing of other units to support them they can fend of a charge before breaking it completely. Gatling guns at the far corner of a castle covering a wide stretch of wall ensures casualties, provided of course they don't get hacked to death by charging enemies.

    To be honest, there's only one castle type(ok, 1 and 2 ½) where the IA can rip you apart with cannons. The concentric one with zero cover on a plain and to a much lesser degree a couple others. In most other cases their range barely reaches the final walls. Once you're played the same map often enough you'll realize the IA always uses the same fixed positions for their artillery, which helps when prearranging your units.
